COVID-19: No Need for Panic, Support Government and Take Precautionary Measures, Oyedele Advises Ondo Residents
A leading governorship aspirant of the All Progressives Congress, APC, in Ondo State, Ife Oyedele (FNSE), has urged the people of the State to remain resolute and take precautionary measures as advised by the government to curb the spread of coronavirus.
In a statement by his media aide Yomi Adebayo, on Sunday, in Akure, Oyedele advised residents and the people of Ondo State to ensure social distancing, regular washing of hands, self-isolation and other measures encouraged by healthcare experts to stay safe from contracting the virus. He said though Ondo state has no confirmed cases of COVID-19, but it is important for residents to also take the precautionary measures serious and not subscribe to the fallacy that the virus cannot survive in Africa.
“The virus is not incurable and the present circumstances it has brought upon us are not insurmountable. We confronted Ebola virus in 2014 and through the efforts of government and support of the citizens we overcame. Presently, thousands of patients in China where the virus originated from have recovered and more are recovering. In Nigeria, six cases have been announced to have recovered, so there is no need to panic, all we need at this time is to cooperate with government and heed the advice of healthcare professionals to stay safe,” Oyedele said.
While commending the effort the Federal and State Governments in ensuring the closure of schools and discouraging large social gathering to curb the spread of the virus, Oyedele said, parents should also assist government by sensitizing their children to imbibe the habits of proper hygiene.
He said though Ondo State is in an election year, which is usually filled with continuous political convergences and engagements, he enjoined political actors to be mindful of large political gatherings, saying such gatherings pose more threat and could sabotage efforts to ensure the virus is contained.
"Health is Wealth. You can only fulfill dreams when you are healthy and alive. Parents should support the effort of government by teaching their kids the basic rules of cleanliness. Everyone must be vigilant and be ready to report any strange health issue to medical experts.
"COVID-19 has shown that everyone is equal before God. Its deadly effect transcends both the social and economic gaps between the rich and the poor. It is a clear indication that no individual or nation is powerful than God. There are no Superpowers or First World countries, no Second World and Third world countries before the creator. This means that it is God's design that we love ourselves equally and it is important that the world should return to God at this time.
"Elections will come and go but only those who stay alive will be able to enjoy the dividends of government. Any large gathering either social, political and religious should be discouraged as they negate the purpose of social distancing encouraged by government to stem the spread of the virus".
Oyedele concluded.
