#COVID19: AKWA IBOM STATE GOVERNMENT ORDERS ONE WEEK LOCK DOWN
Akwa Ibom state workers have been directed by the state Government to stay away from work for one week with effect from Monday 30th March, 2020 in view of concerns over the COVID-19 pandemic.
Also, salaries of State Government workers for the month of March are to be paid today, Thursday, March 26th to enable them get the basic necessities during this period.
This was stated in a press statement signed by the Secretary to the State Government, Dr Emmanuel Ekuwem.
The state government said although there is no confirmed COVID-19 case in Akwa Ibom State, that directive is in line with the ancient adage that, "prevention is better than cure".
He furthered that while on the one week stay-at-home order the Akwa Ibom State Government will continue to monitor and provide regular updates on any development in the COVID-19 situation in the state.
He also announced that all borders and roads leading in and out of the state are closed with immediate effect, except for the transportation of food items.
Furthering it said that Ibom Air will suspend all flight operations from Sunday, 29th March while markets are to remain open for sale of foodstuff and essential items only.
The Government urged Churches to strongly fast and pray for God’s mercies in their various places of worship and also advised residents and citizens to apply all the preventive measures earlier announced.
It frowned at rumour mongers and enjoined all residents and citizens, including professional bodies, to desists from creating unnecessary panic within the state by propagating unverified news, whipping up selfish and myopic sentiments and fanning the embers of discord for pecuniary or political gains.
