Good morning, my good and fellow citizens of Ondo State. I am Adekunle Adeleye from the South Senatorial District of our State; a man who is ready and well equipped to bring the true and desired change to our great State, where I discovered most people are suffering in the midst of plenty. Is this not the same State that thrived and prospered under Chief Adekunle Ajasin and to an extent under Dr Olusegun Agagu? Why cant we re-invent the lofty visions of those eras, to make life more meaningful to our people? For this reason and many more, I humbly seek to offer myself for the service of our people in the next gubernatorial election.
Let me digress a little and visit Lagos State, which remains a model for the rest of Nigeria, as it is arguably the most developed in the country today. This is so largely because of the concentration of national presence in the State and the presence of visionary leadership that ran and continues to run the state.
For the past 10 years now, I have been trying to create awareness for the need of good governance based on educated and informed citizenry to eradicate corruption, greed, oppression, nepotism, redundant policies and all other dangerous defects that exist in our State and country today. For the purpose of this message I believe we can all agree that Lagos and the not too newly created federal capital, Abuja have now become glorified slums as a result of bad or non-existent policies, leading to urban migration by people, young and old in search of greener pasture.
What is my pedigree, people might ask. My answer to that (and always has been) is that I believe a strong and clear vision is a stronger argument. So, in 2012 while in England, I convened The Office of the Celebration of Excellence in Africa with the primary purpose of bringing a consistent and good leadership to all the states and at the centre. Unfortunately, the idea was hijacked by elements within the group. Undaunted, three years later, after relocating to the United States and after careful and diligent studies of past police reforms, I discovered the degree of ineptitude, failure and lack of human interaction between the institution and the society. I am sure you will all agree that a rotten police system will permeate all the rest of social system.
I believe that the federal government that has been able to hide the fiduciary relationship between itself and the states in a questionable constitution which I hope to highlight and correct in my administration as soon as I become governor. For example, why have we not been able to question the absence of state prisons in a country where there are visible differences between federal and state crimes. In a federal structure, why do we have only two prisons for women in the whole country?
Ondo State is uniquely positioned to be the link between the Southwest and the Southeast parts of this country. Human and natural resources abound in our State. It is noteworthy that all the three Senatorial Districts have resources in commercial quantities that will be of great interest to foreign investors and collaborators. All these my administration will pursue without borrowing from the World Bank, the International Monetary Fund and particularly China. We have the right and the capacity to become the third largest economy in Africa, with careful and prudent management, our airport will be the best in the continent.
My focus, therefore, will be the development of our youths, our leaders in the nearest future. Youths in the State will be gainfully employed because the untrained youths will be the problems of tomorrow. It will be the business of our government to right all the past wrongs in the State.
Thank you.
Adekunle Adeleye
Governorship Aspirant
