Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa of Ondo State is facing strong opposition following his administration's decision to allocate ₦30 billion for the construction of a single building for the Ministry of Justice. The move has sparked widespread condemnation from citizens and civil society groups, who argue that such a massive expenditure is an irresponsible use of public funds, given the pressing infrastructure challenges in the state.
In an open letter addressed to Governor Aiyedatiwa by Wande T Ajayi, a renowned political analyst, he expressed his disappointment and frustration over what he sees as a misplaced priority. The letter emphasized that the people of Ondo State are grappling with critical issues such as deteriorating roads, inadequate healthcare, lack of access to clean water, and poor electricity supply in many rural communities.
The letter, which has gained significant attention, highlights the stark contrast between the proposed luxury building and the state's dire need for basic infrastructure. It estimates that the ₦30 billion could be used to build or rehabilitate up to 300 kilometers of roads, construct 600 healthcare centers, or provide clean water and electricity to thousands of underserved communities.
"At a time when so many of our people are struggling with lack of basic amenities, it is unacceptable that the government would prioritize a single office building over the urgent needs of the public," the letter stated.
Ajayi, who is the Team Lead of Council of Young Leaders in People's Democratic Party (CYLi-PDP) urged Governor Aiyedatiwa to cancel the project and redirect the funds toward projects that would directly improve the lives of the people. They criticized the plan to spend such a colossal amount on a single structure, arguing that the justice system in Ondo State would be better served by investments in digital technology, improved court facilities, and better case management, rather than an extravagant building.
"We cannot afford this wasteful project when our roads are in a state of disrepair and healthcare services are lacking," the letter added.
This controversy is seen as a critical test of Governor Aiyedatiwa’s leadership, especially as he steps into the spotlight following the death of his predecessor, Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu. Many are looking to him to make decisions that will positively impact the lives of Ondo State residents, and the handling of this ₦30 billion building project will likely shape public perception of his administration moving forward.
As public pressure mounts, it remains to be seen whether Governor Aiyedatiwa will heed the call for a more responsible use of public funds. The debate over the project is expected to intensify, with citizens demanding that their concerns be prioritized in future decision-making processes.
