Aiyedatiwa Approves the Process of Appointment of Justices of the Peace (JP), As Attorney General Commences Process to Review State Laws

In a landmark move to enhance governance and strengthen justice administration in Ondo State, Governor Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa has approved the appointment process for new Justices of the Peace (JP).

This development comes over a decade after the last appointments, following consistent calls from citizens and stakeholders.

"There has been agitation from well-meaning citizens of Ondo State, eager to be part of the transformative governance and administration of justice in Ondo State, urging for the restoration of this esteemed appointment. In response to this strong demand and his commitment to running an effective and inclusive government, the Governor has approved the process," Ajulo expressed.

On the directive of the Governor, the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Dr Olukayode Ajulo, SAN, OON, has initiated the process by inaugurating a committee to oversee the appointments. The inauguration took place on Monday at the Attorney General's office in Akure.

The committee, chaired by Dr Ajulo, includes senior officials of the Ministry of Justice, including Mrs Olufinmilayo Adejumo, Solicitor General and Permanent Secretary, and Mrs. Adegoke, Director of Corporate Law, serving as its secretary.

Forms for prospective applicants are now available at the office of the Solicitor General and Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Justice, providing an opportunity for community leaders, captains of industry, and other stakeholders to contribute to governance and justice delivery at the grassroots level.

Dr. Ajulo explained that a Justice of the Peace is a respected community member appointed to assist in justice administration. Their duties include witnessing affidavits, attesting to documents, mediating disputes, and fostering peaceful coexistence. "JPs play a critical role in promoting civic responsibilities and integrity in public life while bridging the gap between government and the people," he noted.

The Attorney General emphasized the government’s commitment to appointing individuals of unquestionable integrity, sound judgment, and dedication to community service. He assured that the process would be thorough and transparent, with strict adherence to due diligence. Security agencies such as the Nigeria Police Force and the Directorate of State Services (DSS) will conduct background checks to verify nominees' criminal records, community reputation, and adherence to ethical standards.

"This step is crucial to maintaining the integrity of the office of the Justice of the Peace and ensuring that only individuals with unblemished character, proven honesty, and a strong commitment to justice and public service are appointed," Ajulo stated.

In a related development, the Attorney General also inaugurated a high-powered committee to be chaired by the Solicitor General, Mrs Olufunmilayo Adejumo, to review and update Ondo State's laws.

Dr. Ajulo remarked that many of the laws enacted decades ago have become obsolete and no longer align with contemporary economic and governance realities.

He highlighted the urgency of this initiative, noting that certain penalties prescribed by outdated laws, such as fines as low as ₦100, are now impractical. "Such insignificant penalties encourage deliberate violations of the law, as offenders find them negligible and affordable," he stated.

The review committee, comprising eminent personalities and key stakeholders, includes Mr. Ogunnowo from the Ondo State Law Commission as the Secretary. The committee is tasked with conducting a comprehensive evaluation of the State's laws. They will identify outdated provisions for amendment or repeal and propose new legislation to address emerging challenges.

"This review is essential to align the legal framework with modern governance, justice, and economic realities. It is a testament to the administration's commitment to accountability, fairness, and socio-economic growth," Ajulo stated.

He also stressed that both initiatives reflect Governor Aiyedatiwa's vision for a progressive and dynamic Ondo State. "By appointing credible Justices of the Peace and updating the State's legal framework, the government is creating an environment where justice is accessible, governance is efficient, and the rights of citizens are protected," he concluded.
