OPINION: Mike Omogbehin, The Undisputed Star Material; An Insider’s Scribble

    By Ojo Dolire

“You are not only responsible for what you say, but also for what you do not say.” ~Martin Luther

Something occur to me haven placed keen interest observing how Nigerians ferociously decry lack of good leadership. One would laterally suggest that they’d be appreciative of anyone who promotes and sustains good governance, but rather they’d become hypocritical to achieving the deserving quest in its truest pursuit of society’s growth; yet mendaciously alluding the dearth of all-the-round development to the existence of poor leaders and leadership at the helm of affairs. What do we want!

Again, when opportunity places leaders who parade cognate moral excellence; wearing the face of the society, bearing the burden of social  service and speaking the conscience of humanity, also, delivering gains of democracy to constituents and constituency on a real time duty, our people are still at quick ease to demystify such leader. Terrible jokers.

It is so unfortunate that commoners in the Nigerian society have no conscience of their own, whereas, they are direct victims of poor leadership. Self deluded.

Truth be said, Hon. Omogbehin is a man whose political adversaries and arch rivals could and would not deny his stellar record of unprecedented performance even when they’d became so rash and rabid at the slightest reminder to their ears the need to rally support for his second term aspiration.

The masses oriented deliverables that were championed and delivered en-mass to constituents and constituency remain the sins he deliberately and profusely committed, and remained ensconced doing so. Quite commendable.

He was, unwittingly, committing “sin” because he refuted coaxing attempts to key into the mindlessly established sharing tradition of the people’s wealth with a very few individuals.

Often times, one is tempted to exonerate political office holders who engage in sharing what belongs to the masses with big wigs just to ensure re-election bid seamlessly return to the office.

In its truest sense, one cannot help but to ask; what do we really want as country men and women? As a people, how sincere is the desire to achieving a better society?

Fortunately, MAN knows full well the characters of these shadowy persecutors. “They’re familiar strangers on a familiar mission,“ our early morning one-on-one conversations would suggest.

The pundit remains a personal correspondent to courage, strength and disrupt and yet accessibility lacks sophistication. Attending to queries and suggestions from constituents on media platforms and one-on-one. No barrier.

“Ethical leaders never ask for loyalty. Those leading through fear require personal loyalty. Ethical leaders care deeply about those they lead, and offer them honesty and decency, commitment and their own sacrifice. They have confidence that breeds loyalty,” James Comey avid description fits into MAN’s leadership fashion.

MAN would never forcefully demand for loyalty, rather own innate conviction should do the do. It would never occur to an ethical leader to bluntly ask for loyalty.

Those who are critical of him and his style of leadership are whom help had come their way through him. One can easily infer how human nature slips away kind gesture. I make bold to say that, that out of 10 ruthless critics, 9 have enjoyed at least one benefit from the limited benevolence which office of any member of House of Representatives can offer constituents.

The bulging quest of time leaves memories of history for men to dwell on during a dueling time. The time draws nigh than much anticipated. Mike Omogbehin represents the barometer of performance against which succeeding federal legislators would be measured in the federal constituency office of Ikale and Irele Local Governments.

It is true that the verdicts of history arise from matters before the temple of prosperity which  public court will resolve. Without any innate prejudice to the would be dispositions of interrogators of history at the turn of future; verdict of history will definitely be kind to Hon. MIke Adeniyi Negwo (MAN) Omogbehin.

This active assertion is premised on the consistent affirmation, by his constituents, the novel performance and first-of-its-kind deliverables he delivered to the constituency.

“Negwo is a good man, truthfully, he has performed so well, ” that is a tone of randomly sampled political adversaries. None has ever disputed his candour to the merits of a second term, but, every now and again, they shunted the second term aspiration when debate arose. Probing why? The responses are shrouded in a long-winded dumbbell tracks.

The above is a clear corroboration of the earlier posturing of the future verdict of history, and, hereby, stated in clear and unambiguous and yet assertive words; “the rare verdict of history favours Omogbehin.”

It is, therefore, not the meat of this piece to discuss elements of these perfunctory praises as such responsibility is left for the constituents to continue to dwell on as effusive nature of time delivers to us moment of history.

I am convinced beyond any iota of doubt  that there’s nothing sympathetic to  despairing about as MAN is completely enamoured by the joy contained in little beginning.

As the Valedictory Session of 8th National Assembly holds today commemorating end of tenure, Hon Mike Omogbehin remained the game-changer of Ikale/Irele Federal Constituency; an undisputed star material, a valiant, who will never walk work alone.

I’m always humbled by your uncompromising  leadership stance and disrupt talent.

Nigeria Seeks $1.8bn Loan From China For Coastal Railway

To get started on its long-planned coastal railway from Lagos to Calabar, the government of Nigeria will seek loans worth $1.8bn from China.

Transport minister Rotimi Amaechi said on 23 May that the first segment would run from Port Harcourt to Warri, and would cost $2.3bn, with Nigeria contributing $500m, reported newspaper, Punch
He said: “The government has approved for us to seek a loan of $1.8bn to start work on the coastal rail. The coastal rail is from Lagos to Calabar. So we are taking the segment that starts from Port Harcourt to Warri to join the central line that goes to Abuja.”
Nigeria has been in talks with China to build the full 22-stop, 1,400km railway since 2014, with China Railway Construction Corporation,a subsidiary of China Civil Engineering Construction Company (CCECC), in the frame since then to build it. At the time it was costed at $12bn.
Two years later the parties reached another deal that brought the price down to $11bn.

  • Clampdown On DAAR: Dokpesi To Embark On One Man Protest

The founder of DAAR Communications Plc, Raymond Aleogho Dokpesi, has said he will embark on a one-man protest over moves by the Federal Government to suppress free speech in the country.
The threat by the Ezomo of Weppa-Uwanno, followed two letters by the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) to sanction DAAR Communications over reports it frowned at.
The two letters, signed by NBC’s Director of Broadcast Monitoring, Armstrong Idachaba, a professor, were dated May 27, 2019, and were addressed to DAAR Communications Plc Group Managing Director.
The NBC particularly accused DAAR Communications plc of using contents from the social media in one of its programmes, Kakaaki.
In the letters, the NBC said DAAR Communications Plc, owners of African Independent Television (AIT) and Raypower 100.5FM, aired what it termed offensive, unfair and unprofessional content.
Idachaba said: “The continued use of your licence (given in trust to you on behalf of the entire Nigerian people), to embark on attacks and vilification of the regulator shall attract appropriate sanctions going forward.”
In the letters, Idachaba also said: “Monitoring reports on AIT and Raypower FM indicate that a news commentary replete with unfair allegations against the judiciary was aired from Monday, 20th May, 2019.
“This commentary was aired on the two stations during the week. The broadcast is a contravention of the provisions of the code and extant laws regarding discussion of cases pending in the law courts which could be termed as contempt of court.
“Furthermore, the language used was offensive and unfair on the judiciary. The broadcast is viewed as offensive, unfair and unprofessional, as provisions of Section 1.15.1 of the Nigerian Broadcasting Code was violated.”
The NBC also frowned at a report by DAAR Communications Plc titled “Nigeria Judiciary on Trial: Lessons from Kenya.”
While saying that DAAR Communications plc had until May 31 to respond to the letters or received the NBC’s hammer, the regulatory body said: “Your station is by this letter advised to be cautious when discussing issues relating to matters pending in the court of law and refrain from use of language inimical to the broadcast profession.”
But Dokpesi, in a statement issued in Abuja, blamed the All Progressives Congress-led Federal government for his travails.
Dokpesi said after addressing a world press conference at the DAAR Communications office in Abuja, he would hold a one-man protest to the National Assembly on Thursday, June 6, 2019 (today).
“We invite all Nigerians and the international community to note this obvious act of brigandage against freedom of speech and association as clearly expressed in our Constitution.
“AIT and Raypower have not violated any code of broadcasting as alleged by the NBC. The NBC and the government in power are not comfortable with the broadcast industry because of its courageous and dogged stance in informing Nigerians on happenings in the country,” the statement read.
  • JUST IN: Agbaje Denies Dumping PDP

The Lagos State governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the March 2019 election, Mr. Jimi Agbaje, has denied reports that he has dumped the party for the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Speaking with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos Wednesday, Agbaje’s media aide, Mr. Felix Oboagwina, said that social media posts that Agbaje had left the PDP to join the APC were untrue.

NAN reported that the posts that Agbaje had joined APC have featured prominently on social media platforms such as WhatsApp and Facebook in the past few days.

One of the posts sighted by a NAN political correspondent both on WhatsApp and Facebook on Wednesday read “Lagos PDP finally emptied as Jimi Agbaje defects to APC’’.

Reacting, Oboagwina described the reports as fake news, saying they were figments of the imaginations of the authors.

He said that Agbaje was still very much in PDP and that there was no way he could have joined APC on social media.

“There is nothing like that, nothing like that at all. He is still in PDP; he has not defected.

“How can people say he has defected on social media? He is too big for that; he is in PDP,” Oboagwina said.

When asked if there were plans by his principal to dump the PDP for APC, he answered in the negative.

This is not the first time Agbaje is debunking reports that he had dumped the PDP for APC.

Shortly after the governorship election in March, which he lost to Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu of APC, reports went viral that Agbaje had dumped the PDP for APC over differences with party elders.

However, the PDP candidate swiftly through a press statement issued by Oboagwina, who was Director of Media of his campaign organisation, denied the reports.

The PDP governorship candidate said the “rumour’’ was the handiwork of people he called mischief makers and vowed not to leave the party.

“I will remain in PDP despite the campaign of calumny being waged against me in the media by a few elders.

“For a party that has twice accorded me the honour of running on its platform, it should be regarded as uncharitable to say I am abandoning the party, ‘’ he had said.

Agbaje also dismissed the allegation of mismanagement of campaign funds by some party elders, saying he spent the money according to directives from the national secretariat.

The Lagos PDP has been enmeshed in leadership crisis lately, giving room for all kinds of speculations and leading to some defections. (NAN)

  • BREAKING: Boko Haram Captures Local Government

BREAKING: Boko Haram Captures Local Government

Nigerian Soldiers Took To Their Heels After A Tough War With Boko Haram Over Borno Town

Boko Haram, on Sunday, captured Marte, headquarters of Marte Local Government Area of Borno State, dependable sources have confirmed in Maiduguri.

One of the sources said the insurgents stormed the Marte military base, 153 Task Force Battalion, shooting sporadically and, in the process, razed “everything.”

“The insurgents seem not to have intended harming any civilian, but only to capture the town; so they stormed the military base, taking troops there unawares at about 6pm, much less than an hour to break fast time,” the source confirmed.

“We engaged them in a fierce encounter for about an hour,” a source who fled the base unscathed to Maiduguri, narrated to Daily Trust on Monday, adding that, “initially, we were about getting victorious over them, but they overpowered us, and all troops in the burning base were set asunder, with all of us fleeing in all directions in the bush.”

    He stressed:

“I can tell you that we were about defeating them; but God knows the tactics they later deployed and the defeat turned against us; we all fled; they are in control of the town now.”

According to another fleeing source, “casualty figures cannot be confirmed on both sides, with all of us fleeing in all directions into the bush, and many of us finding their way to Maiduguri, and majority still roaming in the bush.

“Many of us who are lucky to find our way to Maiduguri or any safe community will elope to their home states across the country to relieve themselves of the trauma for a few weeks before returning to Maiduguri for the convergence of the troops,”

The source, who was on his way to his home state in the Northwest region said.

Though security agencies in Maiduguri have not yet issued any statement on the incident, Daily Trust has made efforts to reach the military authorities and will update the story as soon as reactions are received.

  • Alleged Perjury: Group Asks Body of Benchers to Disbar Ondo Deputy Gov

Alleged Perjury: Group Asks Body of Benchers to Disbar Ondo Deputy Gov

A civil-society group, Ondo State Committee on Ethics and Good Governance, has called on the Body of Benchers to probe the Call to Bar of the Ondo State Deputy Governor, Agboola Ajayi, over perjury allegations, in the interest of the law profession.

The group headed by Olabanji Orogbemi, asked the Benchers to withdraw the law degree and the practising certificate issued to the deputy governor, which qualified him as a lawyer in 2010 on the grounds that the politician lied on oath.

In a strongly-worded petition written by Oluwagbenga Adeosun, a legal practitioner, on behalf of the group to the Benchers, the petitioner alleged that the Ondo State deputy governor lied on oath to secure his admission into the Nigerian Law School in the document he submitted to the authorities of the school.

In the petition dated May 28, 2019 and received at the registry of the Body of Benchers, May 30, 2019, Ajayi was accused by the group of being on a full time employment of the Government of Nigeria at the time he secured the law school admission and his eventual call to the Nigerian Bar in 2010 to become a bonafide and full-fledged legal practitioner.

A copy of the letter sighted by THISDAY, revealed that the petitioners anchored their claim on the profile of the deputy governor published in the Ondo State Government web page: www.ondostate.gov.ng, wherein he (Ajayi) claimed that he obtained his Bachelor of Law at the Igbenedion University, Okada, Edo State and that he was called to bar in 2010 after his graduation from the Nigerian Law School.

The grouse of the group against the deputy governor was however predicated in another claim that he was elected between 2007 and 2011 into the House of Representatives for Ilaje/Ese-odo Federal Constituency of Ondo State.

While in the House of Representatives between 2007 and 2011, the deputy governor was said to have served as Chairman of the House Committee on the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) and also served as a member of the House Committee on Gas, Habitat, Justice and Committee on industry.

The group, while citing several authorities claimed that admission into the Nigerian Law School was on full-time basis and that the membership of the deputy governor to the National Assembly during the period was also on a full-time basis and as such he (Ajayi) could not have successfully combined his attendance at the Law School with his attendance in the House of Representatives

Specifically, the group insisted that admission into the Law School barred anybody from full-time employment from being a student of the school because of the cumulative effects of the compulsory attendance in the practical training, lectures, attendance at dinners, attachment to chambers and court as required by law.
It, therefore, called on the Body of Benchers to investigate the claims of the deputy governor, especially how he combined his law school education with his membership of the House of Representatives, both of which are on full-time basis.
If found wanting, the group pleaded with the Benchers to immediately disbar and withdraw the Certificate of Practice issued to the deputy governor in the interest of justice, adding that with his own claim in his profile, Ajayi is not a proper and fit person to be admitted into the Noble Law profession.
“That Ajayi must have employed sharp practices not being omnipresent if indeed he participated fully in all the activities in the Nigerian Law School while sitting and performing all his legislative functions in the House of Representatives, and our client’s humble view is that Ajayi can therefore not be regarded as a fit and proper person to be admitted into this noble and honourable profession.
“It is on this note that our client is asking the esteemed Chairman and members of the reverred Body of Benchers without delay revisit the unlawful, unethical and fraudulent call of Hon. Agboola Ajayi, which was erroneously done in the year 2010 with a view to withdrawing the licence and certificate awarded thereat”, part of the petition read.

  • Messi: I Miss Ronaldo In La Liga

Messi: I Miss Ronaldo In La Liga

    • In a recent interview to Fox Sports, Messi admitted he misses Ronaldo.
    • Leo also mentioned he will retire once he doesn’t feel joy from playing.
    • The Argentine doesn’t see himself as a coach but could work with youth players.

Recently, Lionel Messi sat for an interview with Fox Sports Argentina. The player is currently training with the national team in Buenos Aires ahead of the 2019 Copa America. One of the questions asked was regarding his rivalry with Cristiano Ronaldo: “There is no battle but a healthy one. Cristiano is a great player and of course he motivates me to be even better.”
“Not only La Liga miss Cristiano, I do also. He made Real Madrid more important.”
Leo also talked for how much longer does he intend to play and if he considers becoming a coach once retired:
“Retiring? The day I do not enjoy football anymore, I will quit.”
“I want to finish my career having won something with the national team.”
“When I started to play football my dream was always to reach the national team of Argentina.”
“I do not see myself as a coach. Pep was a unique coach for me. I repeat, I do not see myself as a coach but if I were to become one, it would be with youth players.”
Considering that Barca’s captain only occasionally visits Argentina and doesn’t have many chances to talk to the local fans, the reporters didn’t hesitate to address some questions about the national team:
“I enjoy coming to Argentina to see friends and family in Rosario. It was not easy to leave everything behind in Argentina and go to Barcelona.”
“Argentina? I see a very good group.”
“My biggest dream was to become a football player and reach the top level of football. And also play at Newell’s Stadium.”
“The World Cup in Russia was a complicated period for us. But people knew we were not candidates to win. Today is different, I see a young and excited group ready for success.”
“When we qualified against Nigeria in the World Cup everyone who was mocking us was silent, they wanted us to be humiliated. If we were knocked out in the groups they would kill us all.”
