#ONDO2024: PDP AND ITS REWARD SYSTEM; MAKING A CASE FOR JOHN OLA MAFO

The Ondo State chapter of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has been engulfed in internal bickerings for a very long time. This crisis, when properly critiqued, is largely based on the chapter’s lack of a good reward system that encourages loyalty and dedication to the Party. Ever since the Party lost power in the State, the Party has been on a free fall and members have had no option than to seek refuge elsewhere. Some have retraced their steps and found their way back into the Party but some have never left the Party ever since.

To a whole lot of core PDP supporters in Ondo State, they feel betrayed whenever one politician leaves the Party to seek alternatives in the APC, a party that has destroyed all what the PDP administrations in the State has effected to better the lot of the entire citizenry. From records, it has proved that whenever the Party gives a returnee a ticket, it further divides the Party and causes electoral defeat. The next guber election is a make or mar affair for the Party and a loss would signal the final burial of the Ondo State chapter of PDP.

A survey within Party faithfuls suggests that only a candidate that has the capability and capacity to unite the Party for victory is what they are yearning for. They crave a candidate who has not amassed enemies within and outside the Party. Someone who has exhibited absolute loyalty and respect for the Party. Someone who will not betray their emotions and trust to join the ruling Party. One name comes to mind: John Ola Mafo!

John Ola Mafo has been in the Party since its formation and despite persistent entreaties from the ruling Party has stayed put. The former two term commissioner and the PDP Deputy Governorship Candidate in 2016 is a thoroughbred politician with a proven record of loyalty to the Party. Mafo has amassed quality experience in the public and private sector, necessary for uplifting the State out of abject penury that the APC has plunged it.

The Aheri Ilaje born lawyer, John Ola Mafo comes from the Southern senatorial district of Ondo State. Unlike other aspirants, Mafo has no known enemy within the Party; a factor that makes his candidacy the best for the Party. As Secretary of the Ondo State PDP Elders Committee, he is affiliated to all known tendencies in the Party. With the support of all hands, Mafo will ensure victory for the PDP in the general elections later in the year.

So, the task before the party leadership, the challenge, is how to set aside any divisive tendencies and avoid any dangling of carrots from strange bed fellows, parading themselves as messiahs, in a concerted effort to embrace and endorse the only aspirant who stands out as a lover of the party and a genuine friend of the party faithful and by extension the good people of the Sunshine State.

  • #Ondo2024: Ondo Assembly Speaker Faces Sack Over Aiyedatiwa’s Endorsement

#Ondo2024: Ondo Assembly Speaker Faces Sack Over Aiyedatiwa’s Endorsement

There is a palpable tension as 13 out of 26 members of the Ondo State House of Assembly have disowned the Speaker, Rt Hon. Olamide Olajide for illegally endorsing Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa without due consultation.

The lawmakers have therefore passed a vote of no confidence on the Speaker.

    Below is the full text of their resolution;

ONDO STATE HOUSE OF ASSEMBLY SPEAKER’S DISRESPECT FOR THE INDEPENDENCE AND INTEGRITY OF THE HOUSE IN HIS ENDORSEMENT POLITICS.

The Ondo State House of Assembly wishes to categorically state that it has not passed any resolution to endorse the incumbent Governor of Ondo State, Hon. Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa, as purportedly announced by the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Olamide Oladiji.

The House of Assembly operates on democratic principles, and would formally take a collective decision, follow due process and the relevant laws governing the State where it wishes to take any decision regarding the endorsement of a gubernatorial candidate

As Honourable members of the 10th Ondo State House of Assembly, we were shocked and disappointed to hear the public declaration made by the Honourable Speaker of the House, Rt Hon. Olamide Oladiji, to the extent that the Ondo State House of Assembly has agreed to support the governorship ambition of Governor Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa.

The said declaration by Mr. Speaker is untrue, misleading, un-parliamentary, and, to say the least, ridiculous.

We therefore wish to inform the good people of Ondo State at home and in the diaspora that:

At no point did the Ondo State House of Assembly deliberate the governorship ambition of any of the numerous aspirants that have indicated their interests to contest for the State’s 2024 Governorship Election, let alone agree to support any particular aspirant.

Mr. Speaker lacks the moral and legal authorities to speak or pledge support for any governorship aspirant on behalf of the House without the explicit consent of members.

Mr. Speaker has, by his unconventional and false public declaration, misrepresented the honourable House, and in so doing, brought the 10th Ondo State House of Assembly into disrepute, needless controversies and breached our confidence in his leadership.

Consequently, we hereby pass a vote of no-confidence in the leadership of the Speaker, Rt Hon Olamide Oladiji.

The House of Assembly however reaffirms its commitment to upholding the rule of law and ensuring that all decisions taken are transparent enough and are in the best interest of the people of Ondo State.

  • #Ondo2024: Owo/Ose APC Leaders Denies Endorsing Aiyedatiwa

#Ondo2024: Owo/Ose APC Leaders Denies Endorsing Aiyedatiwa

Some leaders of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Owo and Ose Local Governments of Ondo State has debunked rumours of unanimously endorsing the aspiration of Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa.

In an event held in Owo yesterday, Governor Aiyedatiwa had been endorsed by some APC faithfuls but in a statement released on Tuesday morning, the APC leaders claimed the gathering was only of thosw supporting Aiyedatiwa and late Gov. Rotimi Akeredolu political adversaries.

    Read the full statement below:

    PRESS STATEMENT

RE: OWO, OSE APC LEADERS ENDORSE AIYEDATIWA

We have been inundated with phone calls and text messages regarding a news story with the above headline, claiming that leaders of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Owo and Ose have unanimously endorsed Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa as the party’s candidate ahead of the forthcoming primary election.

The unique standing of our ancient towns of Owo and Ose, and considering that our late respected leader, Arakunrin Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, SAN, CON, was a son of Owo with a fervent following, the alleged endorsement has become a contentious topic amongst our townsfolk, the state, and the nation at large.

We are, therefore, constrained to quell the spreading of this disinformation, and halt this falsehood from gaining further traction within the public domain. Succinctly we assert that the report claiming APC leaders in Owo and Ose have endorsed Aiyedatiwa is both egregiously fallacious and patently deceptive and misleading.

The event that transpired in Owo was, in fact, a gathering of those loyal to Aiyedatiwa, convened at the Oba Olateru Olagbegi Civic Centre for a political meeting, as evidenced by the attendees. The assemblage included Deputy Governor Olayide Oyelami, former Chief of Staff Gbenga Ale, and Femi Idris, all of whom have since aligned with Governor Aiyedatiwa’s camp. Also, Hon. Olayemi Adeyemi, the coordinator for the Aiyedatiwa faction in Owo, was present.

This group has previously opposed Aketi’s interest in the state. Chief Gbenga Ale has been with Aiyedatiwa before our late Governor passed away. Similarly, Mr. Femi Idris’s defection to Aiyedatiwa’s faction was motivated by personal interest, including securing his wife the promotion at the Local Government and maintaining his position as the Chairman of the Local Government Service Commission.

Should there ever be a genuine consensus to endorse a candidate within the Owo and Ose APC chapters, it would be championed by our renowned and steadfast leaders, whose political acumen is well recognized. Such a meeting would necessitate the presence of influential personalities like; Member representing Owo/Ose Federal Constituency, Hon. Timehin Adelegbe; Member of the House of Assembly representing Owo Constituency 1, Hon. Oluwole Ogunmolasuyi; Member representing Owo Constituency 2, Hon. Morenike Witherspoon; former Special Adviser to the late Governor on Union Matters and Special Duties, Mr. Dare Aragbaiye; former Commissioner for Infrastructure, Lands, and Housing under the late Akeredolu, Engr. Raimi Aminu; son of the late Governor, Babajide Akeredolu; Pastor Akin Olotu; former Commissioner for Agriculture and Natural Resources, Mr. Oyato Aribo; member of the Federal Character Commission, Chief Olufemi Omosanya; Chairman of the defunct ANPP, Chief Yinusa Adeola; Chief Tola Awoh; among other stalwarts of the party.

Footage retrieved from the event highlights the local government party chairman’s refusal to publicly endorse Aiyedatiwa, which led to an obvious awkward situation. This unfolding spectacle is as amusing as it is troubling. We remain vigilant of Aiyedatiwa’s escalating desperation and his campaign’s attempts to manufacture endorsements across the state.

Our resolve is firm in Owo and Ose, and within the broader APC family, to not let misrepresentations prevail. The loyalists of the late Governor Akeredolu’s leadership in Owo and across the state stand united in their rejection of Aiyedatiwa’s tactics to secure the party’s nomination. It is well documented that Aiyedatiwa’s treatment of the late Governor was profoundly inhumane and deeply callous.

We refuse to honour such betrayal and cruelty with our party’s endorsement. As we await guidance from our revered leader and father, President Bola Tinubu, we are committed to exposing the deceit and mendacity of Aiyedatiwa and his cohort of betrayers.

  • Aiyedatiwa Didn’t Attend Ikosi High School As Claimed In Documents Submitted To INEC – Police Report

Aiyedatiwa Didn’t Attend Ikosi High School As Claimed In Documents Submitted To INEC – Police Report

A certified true copy of Police report circulating on social media says Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa of Ondo state was never a student of Ikosi High School, Ketu, Lagos state.

Aiyedatiwa was said to have claimed he attended the school in the information he gave to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) prior to the 2020 gubernatorial election in the state.

He participated in the governorship poll as the running mate of the late Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu.

The report, however, said Aiyedatiwa sat for the May/June 1982 West African Examination Council (WAEC) General Certificate of Education (GCE) O/L at Ikosi, Ketu, Lagos, with Centre Number 15592 and Candidate Number 019.

The report, dated February 19, 2024, was signed by Tahir Usman, Deputy Commissioner of Police, for Commissioner of Police, Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID), Abuja.

A Lagos-based legal practitioner, Oladotun Hassan, had reported a case of alleged fraudulent misrepresentation, certificate forgery, examination malpractices and perjury against Aiyedatiwa on June 2, 2023.

The petition was sent to the office of the Deputy Inspector General of Police, FCID, Abuja.

The legal practitioner had alleged that Aiyedatiwa submitted to INEC a certificate purportedly issued by WAEC in 1982, having sat for the May/June 1982 examinations at Ikosi High school.

He stated that upon enquiries, it was discovered that the school was founded in 1980 and could not be accredited by WAEC to conduct school certificate examinations in 1982 since it would just be two years old.

Oladotun also question Aiyedatiwa’s claim that he attended Saint Peter’s UNA (now FAC) Primary School, Obe Nla/Obe Adun, in Ilaje Local Government Area of the state.

According to the legal practitioner, the name of the governor did not appear in the school’s register and nobody who attended the school during the period could attest his studentship.

He also wondered when Aiyedatiwa attended Lagos State College of Education, Ijanikin, where he claimed to have obtained the Nigeria Certificate of Education (NCE) in 1986.

After preliminary investigation, it was discovered that Aiyedatiwa was never a student of Ikosi High School.

The police report said the name of the governor was not among the students offered admission or registered in the school as shown by the admission register from 1979 to 1982.

The report added that the school was established on January 29, 1980 and accredited by WAEC in 1985.

It, however, stated that Aiyedatiwa sat for the May/June 1982 WAEC GCE examination with Centre Number 15592 and Candidate Number 019.

The report was silent on the other allegations raised by Oladotun.

Reacting to the report, Yom Oyekan, Special Assistant to the Governor (Digital Media), said: “The investigative findings confirm Governor Aiyedatiwa’s successful completion of his WAEC (GCE) O/L examination at Ikosi Ketu, Lagos, supported by tangible evidence.

“This verification unequivocally resolves any uncertainties regarding his eligibility for electoral contests.

“Despite mentions of discrepancies regarding his educational background, such inconsistencies do not invalidate his possession of the minimum requirement – a valid O/Level certificate or its equivalent.

“Legally speaking, meeting this criterion suffices, irrespective of minor factual deviations.”

Also reacting, an Abuja-based legal practitioner and strong supporter of Aiyedatiwa, Tolu Babaleye said: “I was scared at the initial stage of the report until I got to the paragraph where it was confirmed that His Excellency wrote WAEC (GCE) O/L at Ikosi Ketu, Lagos with Centre number 15592 and candidate number 019.

“With that finding by the police, the Governor’s matter of having the basic qualification to contest the Election is settled beyond reasonable doubt.

“It would have been a different ball game if the Police had confirmed that Aiyedatiwa forged his O/Level certificate or if WAEC had disowned the result tendered by Aiyedatiwa!

“That the Governor claimed to have attended certain schools when he did not actually attend goes to no issue. It remains a mistakes of facts.

“If the the Police had confirmed that the Governor forged his O/Level result, it would have been over for him; but as it is at the moment, there is absolutely nothing to worry about.

“The Police Investigation Report has cleared the Governor that his O/Level certificate is legit, every other thing is a counterfeit.

“The issue of whether he claimed to have attended Ikosi High School when the school had not been founded goes to no issue.

“Attendance of school is not part of the requirement, what the law requires is having an O/Level certificate or its equivalent which is the minimum requirement.”

However, an Akure-based lawyer, Morakinyo Ogele, said if the police report said Aiyedatiwa did not attend the school he claimed to have attended, a case of perjury had been established against him.

“The governor may not have any problem with his WAEC certificate. But if it is true that he sworn under an oath that he was a student of a school he did not attend, a case of perjury must have been established against him,” Ogele said.

“I have come to understand something about life, those that God has favoured, blessed and truly cherish, He does not like them to stay too long on earth because he doesn’t want them to get corrupted.

  • EXCLUSIVE: Presidential Guards Brigade Placed On High Alert Over Suspicions Of Coup Plot In Nigeria

EXCLUSIVE: Presidential Guards Brigade Placed On High Alert Over Suspicions Of Coup Plot In Nigeria

…Key Brigades Under Watch As Commander Holds Emergency Meetings With Tinubu, Gbajabiamila

Last week, the Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, warned people calling for a coup over the current economic hardship in Nigeria to desist from such.

The Presidential Guards Brigade has been put on high alert following unusual movements, leading to suspicions of a coup plot in Nigeria.

SaharaReporters exclusively learnt on Sunday that the suspicions prompted emergency meetings involving the Commander of the Presidential Guards Brigade, Col. Adebisi Onasanya, President Bola Tinubu and the Chief of Staff, Femi Gbajabiamila.

“The Presidential Guards Brigade was placed on high alert after unusual armoured corps movement spurred coup suspicion,

“Last week, Col. Onasanya met with the President and Chief of Staff twice within 20 hours.

“They have also placed key brigades under watch due to planned protest,” a top Presidency source told SaharaReporters.

There has been tension in the country amid the current hardship, rising inflation and high cost of living following the removal of fuel subsidy and floating of the naira by President Tinubu’s administration.

The floating of the naira allows the market forces to determine its value. The policies have pushed up the prices of goods and services astronomically, increased the rate of inflation and worsened hardship in the country.

Last week, the Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, warned people calling for a coup over the current economic hardship in Nigeria to desist from such.

Musa, who said the Armed Forces would continue to protect the country’s democracy, warned that the long arms of the law would soon catch up with the proponents of coup d’état.

While fielding questions from journalists when he inaugurated the main entrance of the 6 Division, Nigerian Army and Officers Transit Accommodation in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, the CDS admitted that the country was going through serious economic challenges.

He, however, insisted that having a military coup in the country was not an option.

He said the military would protect Nigeria’s democracy, as according to him, Nigerians want democracy and the country does better under democracy.

He said the military would continue to support democracy, adding that the people calling for coup d’etat “are evil people” who “don’t mean well for Nigeria”.

He warned such people to be “very careful because the law will come after them”.

According to him, everybody goes through a trying period in life.

“You can see the government putting efforts to ensure that we come out better.

“And it is when you go through difficulties and come out better you will really appreciate what it is to build a nation,” he said.

Nigeria’s naira recently crashed to a record low against the dollar on the official market.

Last week, SaharaReporters reported that the naira exchanged for N1980 to $1 on the parallel market and N1780 on the official market as the swift decline continued amid the government’s clampdown on currency speculators.

Meanwhile, there have been protests against hardship, rising inflation and high cost of living in several parts of the country following some economic policies of President Tinubu’s administration.

For instance, there have been protests in Kano, Ogun, Niger, Sokoto, Oyo and Osun states to express their displeasure with the unprecedented level of hunger in the land.

Meanwhile, the Nigeria Labour Congress had announced a nationwide protest scheduled for February 27 and 28, to kick against the economic challenges facing Nigerians.

The decision came after a 14-day ultimatum issued to the Nigerian Government regarding the widespread hardship.

But the Department of State Services (DSS) and the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi, (SAN) have urged the NLC to shelve its proposed nationwide protest.

Similarly, the Trade Union Congress has warned that the planned protest being championed by the NLC may lead to anarchy due to the tense nature of the country amid current hardship and prevailing hunger in the land.

The government warned that the NLC would be in contempt of court if the planned protest was held. But a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Femi Falana has written to Fagbemi, noting that NLC would not be in contempt of court over its planned nationwide protest.

In the letter dated February 24, 2024, and addressed to Fagbemi, Falana said, “We submit, without any fear of contradiction, that the proposed public protest of the NLC is not contemptuous of the two ex parte orders of the National Industrial Court. In particular, the issue of contempt does not arise as the NLC has challenged the jurisdiction of the National Industrial Court to entertain the substantive case.”

    History Of Coups In Africa

Indeed, the African continent has seen a significant increase in coups in the last three years, with military figures carrying out takeovers in Gabon, Niger, Burkina Faso, Sudan, Guinea, Chad and Mali.

Of 492 attempted or successful coups carried out around the world since 1950, Africa has seen 220, the most of any region, with 109 of them successful, Jonathan Powell and Clayton Thyne’s data show.

Powell told VOA this is because Africa tends to have many of the conditions that are normally associated with coups.

“Coups have become increasingly limited to the poorest countries in the world, and the recent wave of coups fits into that,” he said.

Gabon, Niger, Burkina Faso, Guinea, Chad and Mali all had less than $22 billion in GDP in 2022, according to a World Bank estimate, while Sudan had a GDP of $52 billion. By comparison, the United States’ GDP was worth $25 trillion in 2022, ranking it the highest in the world.

Countries experiencing ongoing terrorism campaigns and insurgency are also disproportionately more likely to see coups, according to Powell, as well as those nations whose leaders lack legitimacy in the eyes of their citizens or armed forces.

Leaders of the Niger coup in July 2023, as well as those who took over the government in Burkina Faso in September 2022, cited their governments’ failure to stem a deadly Islamist insurgency in the Sahel as part of the justification for their takeovers.

Out of 54 countries on the African continent, 45 have had at least one coup attempt since 1950, according to data collected by Powell and Thyne. Narrowing the focus to only those countries that have experienced a successful takeover — one in which perpetrators hold power for at least seven days — that number drops to 37, or about two-thirds of nations on the continent.

Nigeria, Africa’s most populous nation, had a long history of coups following independence in 1960, with eight coup attempts — six of them successful.

However, since 1999, the country has transferred power through democratic elections and helped usher in greater stability in West Africa and the continent as a whole, the report noted.
