Appeal Court Ruling: I Remain Oyo Governor – Makinde

The executive governor of Oyo State, Engr Seyi Makinde, has called on Oyo Citizens and all his supporters across the country to remain calm, that he remains the governor of the state.

Reacting to the various news headlines, as a result of the appeal court ruling today, Makinde asked his followers to ignore the sensationalism of the headlines, that no court has ruled against him.

The appeal court in it ruling, upheld the election, no judgement was given against him.

It is pre mature for anyone to wish that a landslide victory can just be upturn. Although, they may wish that such happens, but it won’t ever happen. The mandate was freely given to him by the good people of Oyo State.

Makinde a widely accepted Governor, scored a total of 515,621 votes to beat Adebayo Adelabu, his closest rival and candidate of the All Progressives Congress, who polled a total of 357,982 votes, a margin too wide for any court to upturn.

The governor said, there is really nothing to worry about , because, all they, the opposition are planning is already in the public. He said that, the judiciary is credible and won’t allow itself to be used against the will of the Oyo State.

I urge you all to go about your normal businesses, we won’t be distracted in our quest to make Oyo State, a model State where good governance and leadership will be the order of the day, Makinde stated.

OLOROGUN EDDY ENIOLA OLAFESO: HARBINGER OF HOPE, EPITOME OF EXCELLENCE

Olorogun Eddy Eniola Olafeso, (Ph.D) is a recurrent name in societal mobilisation and re-engineering, politics and entrepreneurship in the last three decades.  His stellar involvement in the private sector saw him joined DHL International in 1985 where he left to co-found RedStar Express in the 1990’s. He was also Head Corporate Affairs, Ajaokuta Steel Company, 2003-2004.

From 2002, when he returned from the United States to participate in active politics, Olorogun Olafeso has truly live the erudite Napoleon Bonaparte’s ageless assertion that, ‘’a leader is a dealer in hope”.  Blessed to have the privilege to understudy the late Dr Olusegun Agagu, erudite scholar and former Governor of Ondo State, Olorogun’s mobilisation skills and loyalty to the party earned him the position of the Secretary of the state chapter of the PDP in 2007. He was appointed Hon. Commissioner of Information, Orientation and Mobilisation in 2007. Naturally gifted with the power of oration and crisps ideas, his well-articulated performance as the mouth piece of one of the most successful administrations in the State is well documented.   He was also Board Chairman, Owena Motels in 2003.

Olafeso’s hope dispensing and personal development acumen in his individual quest for societal well-being and well spread inclusive opportunities for all, has seen him braved the encumbrances of his humble background to inspire both young and old in his local environment, state and the nation at large.

Born six decades ago in Okitipupa, Okitipupa Local Government Area of Ondo State, to a civil servant father, the Late Chief Maclean Adenogun Olafeso, foremost community leader and administrator, who worked his entire career in the Local Government setup, Olorogun Eddy Olafeso, from his adolescent age has been wired to shoulder responsibility and inspire hope.

As the first child in a family of nine, he was co-parent to his siblings and motivator to his extended family and community in dire need of a trail blazer. Although, even as a child, Olafeso has always displayed academic brilliance and indisputable focus, he had to take the long route in his quest for higher education owing to paucity of fund at his parents’ disposal. He was admitted to the Teacher Training College, Ode Aye as a 17- year old and from there, he transferred to the College of Education, Ikere in present day Ekiti State. His legendary ambition and unquenchable thirst for greater height saw him admitted to the then University of Ife in the late 1970’s where he bagged a first degree in English and Master of Science Degree in International Relations.

A man of inimitable leadership and social talents, it was at the University of Ife that his leadership ability blossomed. In the build up to the Students’ Union Government Elections in 1982, only a few gave him a chance! His inspirational conduct and innate leadership skills, however swung the tide in his favour, as his campaign slogan that caught the attention of the ever conscious Great Ife students was in tandem with John Quincy Adam’s battle cry, “If you inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more and become more, you are a leader”.  It was this same inspiration that led to many laudable innovations of that era.

Although he holds a Doctor of Philosophy Degree in International Relations from the Atlantic International University, Hawaii, United States of America in 2008, Olorogun Olafeso has membership of other professional bodies like, the Nigerian Institute of Management since 1990 and Marketing Association of Nigeria since 1991. His dexterity and dedication to duty has not gone unnoticed. He was awarded, certificate of Merit as the President of the Students ‘Union, University of Ife, 1983, Best Salesman of the Year, DHL International, 1987, Long Service Award, DHL International,1991, Leadership Award, FEDEX/REDSTAR Express, 1994 and Distinguished Alumni Award, Obafemi Awolowo University, 2004, amongst others.

Olorogun Olafeso, presently, Chairman/CEO Aegis Core Resources Limited since 2002, Vice- National Chairman (South West) PDP since 2017, is well travelled, cosmopolitan, married and blessed with children

  • BREAKING: ‘Buhari May Contest For Third Term’

BREAKING: ‘Buhari May Contest For Third Term’

A former political associate of President Muhammadu Buhari and the National Chairman of Reformed All Progressives Congress, rAPC, Alhaji Buba Galadima, has stated that Nigerians should not be surprised to see the President contesting in the 2023 presidential election.

Buba Galadima who now works together with the PDP said that when the time comes, PDP will usher Buhari into the 2023 presidential race.

Galadima claimed that President Buhari’s absence in the country during the hearing of the petition filed by Atiku meant that Buhari is in control of the judiciary as he is confident of victory.

He said, “I have never seen such a terrible situation like what we are witnessing in Nigeria today under the APC-led government of President Muhammadu Buhari. Not even during the colonial era, and the military period have Nigerians passed through these hard times.”

“With Buhari in charge, it is like Nigerians have entered a one-chance bus. What is even surprising is that despite all the hardship, and suffering being inflicted on Nigerians, Buhari is not bothered. He doesn’t feel moved by the cries of hardship and sufferings, which his government has brought upon Nigerians.”

“Now Buhari has travelled outside the country again. He has travelled to Saudi Arabia, and from there, he will go to the United Kingdom. Does that show the trait of a good leader? Buhari keeps on travelling across the globe while Nigerians are wallowing in poverty.”

“He is not moved by all the hardship, and not only that, he feels so confident that his mandate is secured. If not, he would not have travelled to Saudi Arabia on the eve of the hearing of petition, and appeal against his election by Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, the presidential candidate of PDP.”

“Buhari has already pocketed the judiciary, and he feels that nothing will happen, and that he will be victorious at the court. His government has destroyed the judiciary and this is very troubling for democracy, and our nation.”

“A lot of politicians will be disappointed. Only God knows what will happen between now and 2023. Buhari may even be drafted to join the 2023 fray by some of his aides and associates.”

“Buhari may be drafted by those enjoying under his government. Buhari has always been drafted to contest elections, and I won’t be surprised if his supporters draft him into the 2023 race.”

“But clearly, what these politicians jostling and talking about 2023 don’t know is that they are over-exposing themselves. They are exposing their weaknesses, and their opponents or political foes may use it against them.Nobody knows how 2023 will go. It is only God that knows. Anything can happen between now, and 2023.”

  • REMINISCING WOMEN’S ROLE IN BREAKING POVERTY AND HARDSHIP by JANET COLE AJAYI

REMINISCING WOMEN’S ROLE IN BREAKING POVERTY AND HARDSHIP by JANET COLE AJAYI

Being a paper delivered at the 1st AWOTIB symposium

    By Janet Cole-Ajayi

Today the October 16th is World Food Day. Sadly, millions of working people in Nigeria today are living in extreme hunger! Credible statistics, especially from OXFAM says that over a hundred million Nigerians are living below the poverty level; meaning that they live below ₦600 ($2) per day. This is very alarming and justifies those who have been calling for a proper overhauling of the hostile economy and politics prevalent today.

World Food Day is a time when people around the world declare their commitment to eradicating hunger. It was inaugurated in 1979, to tell the whole of humanity that everyone in the globe should never live in hunger. And to make food so available to all and sundry, agriculture is the key.

Agriculture is the art and science of cultivating the soil, growing crops and raising livestock. The world is concerned about the global hunger and poverty. Social protection thus became an important programme organized, to reduce poverty and manage socio-economic risks such as unemployment, sickness, disability and old age.

Social protection can be effective and sustainable, if there is inclusive economic growth. This is where women ought to play an important role in managing natural resources both at family and community levels.

Report shows that in communities around the world, women produce 70 – 80 percent of agricultural growth, yet they are prevented from inheriting properties acquired by their male counterparts in the course of cohabiting. For instance, in some communities men marry more than one wife, as they experience agricultural growth. These wives are then expected to help out on the farms, thereby depriving them of the opportunity to make meaningful contribution to decision-making for societal development. In some part of eastern Nigeria, the female child is not entitled to any inheritance; it is a general belief that the male child alone has a right to properties, since he won’t be sold off in marriage, like the girl-child.

In the developing countries women are caregivers to not just children, but the elderly and sick too. The entire community is dependent on women!. All over the world women have tried to contribute to agricultural production. The average woman produces more than half of all the food that is grown. It is therefore important that the education of women and girls receive adequate attention, to enable them understand the difference between the environment and development.

WOMEN EDUCATION AND EMPOWERMENT AS PANACEAS TO HUNGER

Empowerment of women in human development and in relation to the protection of the environment must be recognized and sustained. Educated women are more likely to have fewer, healthier and better trained children who will survive into adulthood and ultimately contribute to economic growth. This does not mean that non-eduated women like artisans and others do not have survival means. In fact, most of them habitually survive through habitual trading. A great example is the Egun women in Lagos that deal majorly in fishing. We also have the Deltan women who handles the agricultural development while also not found wanting domestically.

WOMEN’S RIGHTS IN AN UNEQUAL WORLD

We live in an unjust world where the rights of women are violated with impunity. This consequently hold back women around the world, even as they experience unequal access to land, resources and properties. There is evidence from a number of studies conducted during the 1980’s that mothers typically spend their income on food and health care for children. Over millions of women worldwide find solace in acquiring small loans, microfinance and other financial services for their petty businesses, because they do not have access to the formal banking system. Cheering though, is that over the years, microfinance programs  have succeeded in increasing the incomes of poor household, thereby protecting their families. Women who now own or have access to land can use the land to produce food for general income or as collateral for credit or loan facility from the microfinance banks. More can still be done by way of intervention from several organisations like AWOTIB.

Over the years there have been many efforts to reduce poverty among African women. Investments have been introduced at different periods, to increase agricultural productivity, improve livestock management,  and provide opportunities for sustainable livelihoods. However, when the society pays little or no attention to training the girl child, because of some myth that all efforts put into developing the female gender eventually ends in the kitchen, there is bound to be hardship and increased poverty in the land. There is an adage which says, “train a female, and you have trained a whole nation”. It behoves us, great women, to do all that’s within our reach in ensuring appropriate training of women and girls, if we must break poverty and hardship.

WAYS-FORWARD: WOMEN ARE THE SALT OF THE WORLD!

I will like to conclude by itemising a few things women can do to survive, as well as take leading roles in the building of our world. Such as can be useful and convenient for all.

First, is that women in Nigeria must stop feeling inferior to men. We must stop begging men to ascribe to us, roles to play in societal development. Especially in politics and the economy. We are actually the most fundamental in both sectors!

Women must continue to resist through our communal organizing and networking. We have great examples in Funmilayo Kuti, Fela’s mother who organized the Egba women against the colonial government. My own mother-in-law in Ondo state also led women in her family to break the wicked laws that women don’t get inheritances. These steps are actually going to be very difficult, but we have to do what we have to, for our everlasting freedom.

Finally, we must start standing up against government rules and principles that attack womanhood and help to keep on the poverty cycle. One of such is the current allocations to health and education in the 2019 budget by the Federal government. There is certainly no way that the ₦48billion allocated to education can allow for free and quality education at all levels and this makes women to be the eventual victims. It is a fact that costly education affects women than men. Also, with the over 200 women that die everyday as a result of child birth, the ₦46billion allocated to healthcare will only make more hospitals to degenerate and by so doing, increase the number of women dying every day.

Great women, let us all band together and fight for a world with abundant food for all; a world where women live in real comforts just as men!
    Aluta Continua!

  • BREAKING: I WILL CONTEST FOR GOVERNOR – EDDY OLAFESO INFORMS ONDO PDP

The National Vice Chairman(South West) of People’s Democratic Party(PDP), Dr. Eddy Olafeso has notified Ondo State PDP executives of his intention to contest for the governorship seat of Ondo State. He made known his intention at an event held at the Ondo State party secretariat today, Monday, 30th of September, 2019 in Akure.

Addressing the party leadership in Ondo State, Dr. Olafeso said it is imperative for him to inform the leaders and stakeholders of the party of his intentions before moving out. He said “This is not a declaration. With my stature and status, my declaration is going to be in a big form with thousands in attendance. I’m here to put the party leadership on notice that I’m going to run for Governor.”

Explaining his decision to contest, Olafeso said it is needful for those who truly love Ondo State to savage it and the hope of Ondo people lies with the PDP. “We must rise and shine as a party. Our people are looking up to us. The labours of our past heroes have been shattered within a very short period by the incumbent Governor. The state of Ajasin, Adefarati, Agagu, and Mimiko now take money from pupils to be tutored. It has gone that low.”

Olafeso also assured other aspirants of a level playing field. “Our party respects internal democracy” he said.

Speaking at the event, Faboyede, Ondo State PDP Chairman described Eddy Olafeso as a fine gentleman.

Dr. Eddy Eniola Olafeso was born in Okitipupa in Ondo State. For his higher education, he attended Obafemi Awolowo University in 1985 where he obtained a BA. First Class honours in English. Dr. Olafeso pursued his post graduate studies in Obafemi Awolowo University, obtaining an Msc International Relations, in 1985, before he traveled to Hawaii, USA to acquire a PHD in International Relations. • Osinbajo’s Office Has Been Rendered Useless, Impotent —Afenifere

Osinbajo’s Office Has Been Rendered Useless, Impotent —Afenifere

Yoruba socio-cultural group, Afenifere, says from the look of things, Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo’s office has been rendered useless, impotent and irrelevant.

It, however, said it would be too early to speculate if Osinbajo’s “ordeal” was caused by any misdemeanor on his part or if it was based on permutations ahead of the 2023 general elections.

The spokesman for Afenifere, Mr. Yinka Odumakin, said this during an interview with The PUNCH on Wednesday.

He said, “We are watching as events unfold. We are studying the situation, but we must also not muddle up issues.

“For now, we will not jump into any premature conclusion that this is about 2023 alone.

“We will need more information to know whether it is political or whether there was abuse of office or process.

“But the barrage of the last 48 hours shows that there is something wrong.

“We will wait to have all the facts because we don’t want to say a Yoruba man is being attacked.

“They may have had a justifiable reason to do so; but we are taking note of every development and at the appropriate time, we will make our position known.

“But clearly, what has happened is that the VP’s office has been rendered impotent, useless and irrelevant.”

It may be recalled that the Economic Management Team hitherto led by Osinbajo was suddenly dissolved on Monday and replaced with an advisory council that would report directly to President Muhammadu Buhari.

The following day, online news medium, The Cable, reported sighting a memo in which the President instructed the Vice-President to, henceforth, seek presidential approvals before taking any action over agencies under his (Osinbajo’s) supervision.

Currently, Osinbajo is the chairman of the governing boards of the National Emergency Management Agency, the National Boundary Commission, the Border Communities Development Agency and the Niger Delta Power Holding Company — a limited liability company owned by the three tiers of government.

It was learnt that some agencies, such as NEMA, would rather deal directly with the President than with Osinbajo.

There are also reports that some of Osinbajo’s aides had been transferred out of the Presidential Villa and seconded to some Ministries, Departments and Agencies, MDAs.

The Presidency, it was reported, is planning to strip the Vice-President of his brainchild known as the Social Investment Programme which comprises the TraderMoni Scheme, N-Power, school feeding programme and others.

The welfare programme is expected to be placed under the newly-created Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development headed by Mrs. Sadiya Umar.

  • WHY I CONGRATULATED PRESIDENT MUHAMMADU BUHARI BY GOVERNOR WIKE

WHY I CONGRATULATED PRESIDENT MUHAMMADU BUHARI BY GOVERNOR WIKE

Rivers State Governor,  Nyesom Ezenwo Wike has explained that he congratulated President Muhammadu Buhari after the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal confirmed his election because it is better to offer public congratulations than visit the President at night.

Governor Wike said that unlike some Governors of the Peoples Democratic Party ( PDP) who visit President Muhammadu Buhari at night,  he made his declaration public  because  it came from the heart.

He spoke at the Funeral  Service in honour of Late Madam Blessing Awuse,  Mother of Onha Sergent Chidi Awuse,  at the St Luke’s Anglican Church,  Emohua on Thursday.

He said: ” I am sure all of you are surprised that I congratulated Buhari. Is it not good for me to congratulate him,  than to go to his house in the night?”

“So many PDP Govenrors go to see him in his house in the night. I have never gone and I will not go. I won’t go.”

“We are  the only state that the Federal Government refused to pay us our money used to execute  Federal  projects because I don’t go to see him in the night and I won’t go. He is not my friend, he is not doing well, but he won in court, should I say that the court did wrong, no.”

“President Buhari, congratulations and carry Nigerians along. Unify the country, the country is too divided. I am saying what is right. What I will do, I will do, what I will not do, I will not do”.

Governor Wike said politics is a game of interest,  noting that Rivers people in the All Progressives Congress are under obligation to attract Federal benefits to the state.

‘Politics is a game of interest.  And my only interest is Rivers State . Anything that is against the interest of Rivers State,  I will  not agree.

“These people sold us out, thinking that they are doing Governor Wike.  It is the State that you are offending,  because I am just one person “.

Governor Wike expressed displeasure that Rivers State has key links to President Muhammadu Buhari from the State,  yet the East West  Road, the seaports and other Federal projects have been completely neglected since 2015. He said nothing indicates that Rivers State has prominent APC members working with President Muhammadu Buhari.

The Rivers State Governor maintained that Rivers State is a Christian state.  He said that the facts of Rivers being a Christian State will not be changed by negative  propaganda and falsehood targeted at his person.  He said he never demolished a Mosque as was falsely circulated by some mischief makers.

He said Rivers State is a major oil producing State that deserves major projects from the Federal Government.

“We produce oil . They should not punish Rivers State because of me. I am just one individual.  We have not benefited anything from the Federal Government. The only thing we have benefited is the abuse they heap on me.

“They turned the NDDC  into  a cash cow to sponsor elections against us. Nobody protested that anomaly.  Now they want us to protest because someone did not nominate the management of NDDC  this time.

“Since 2015, NDDC has not had its governing board, but nobody protested.  I will not be dragged into  such protests “, he said.

On the passage of Late  Mrs Blessing Awuse, Mother of Ohna Sergeant Awuse, Governor Wike said she lived a fulfilled life and raised disciplined and trustworthy children.  He said that her burial is a celebration of life.

Chief Mourner, Ohna Sergeant  Awuse thanked the Rivers State Governor for his love and friendship.  He said the Rivers State Governor always intervenes at the most critical time.

Anglican Bishop of Ikwerre Diocese, Rt Rev  Blessing Enyindah praised the Rivers State Governor for his commitment  to the development  of the state.

He urged the Rivers State Governor to continue with his good works.  He said that Governor Wike should focus on the people in all his programmes.

  • FUOYE: NANS Condemn Bisi Fayemi

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) on Wednesday condemned in strong terms, the alleged killing of two students of Federal University, Oye Ekiti, and injuring of others by security details attached to Chief (Mrs) Bisi Fayemi; wife of Ekiti State Governor, Kayode Fayemi.

The students – Dada Kehinde Abiodun, a part one student at the Department of Crop Science and Horticulture and another were allegedly shot dead during protest on Tuesday by security personnel suspected to be in the convoy of Bisi Fayemi.

In a statement in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital, by Azeez Adeyemi; the National Public Relations Officer, NANS, he stated that sorrow engulfed Ekiti state on Tuesday when the wife of the Governor (allegedly) directed her security personnel to maltreat students for protesting against her husband’s alleged anti people’s government.

Azeez wondered what the Governor’s wife expected the students to do other than protest against a second time Governor that could not address the electricity challenges in Oye Ekiti, a bustling town in Ekiti State.

The NANS image-maker stated that trouble started when the protesting students sighted the wife and of the Governor and wanted to explain their reason for the protest to her, but one of her security personnel slapped the Students Union President in the process.

Azeez added this touched off the anger of the students who then pelted Bisi Fayemi’s convoy with sachet waters, an action, he claimed further, impelled the Governor’s wife to allegedly order her security aides to be ruthless with the students.

He stated: “A student, Dada Kehinde Abiodun, a Part 1 student of the Department of Crop Science and Horticulture was killed while some others were severely injured and are receiving treatment at the Federal Medical Centre.

“One of the students placed under intensive care has also given up the ghost during the early hours of today.

“Meanwhile, so as to distort the truth before it gets to the public domain, the government quickly rushed to the press and fed them with lies all because they are in possession of the financial capacity to do and undo.

“It is, however, important to note that although we do not have the financial muzzle to contend with you in the media, we shall explore every lawful means to communicate the anti – students attitude of Mrs Fayemi to the world.

“To this end, we have however declared the wife of Governor Fayemi a personal non grata anywhere 50meters of any university campus, as we request her to always keep 50 meters away from all our campuses in the country as she constitutes threat to the lives of our students.

“We are not ignorant of the move of the government to kidnap our comrades when sighted anywhere in the state.

“As a result of this unholy plot by the Ekiti state government, we would protest her wicked act in at least one state from each of the geo -political zones of the country, with effect from Monday 16, September, 2019.

“We however appealed to mothers and other international communities to join force with us to condemn this inhuman act.”
