The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has announced the indefinite suspension of the planned election of the Joint Campus Committee (JCC), Osun Axis, following the death of a student leader, Comrade Abdullateef Olamilekan, popularly known as “Lexzy,” and the growing political tension in Osun State.

The directive was contained in an official letter dated July 16, 2026, and signed by the President of NANS, Distinguished Comrade Akintoye Babatunde Afeez.

Addressed to the Chairman of the NANS JCC Osun Axis Caretaker Committee, the letter conveyed the condolences of the national leadership to the family, friends and the entire student community over the demise of the late student leader.

Describing the death of Abdullateef Olamilekan as shocking and an irreparable loss, the NANS President prayed for strength for all those affected by the tragedy.

Afeez recalled that the national leadership had earlier directed the Osun JCC Caretaker Committee to conduct the election within the stipulated timeframe. However, he said the unfortunate death of the student leader and the escalating political atmosphere in Osun State necessitated a review of that decision.

“In honour of the late Comrade Abdullateef Olamilekan (Lexzy) and in view of the rising political tensions in Osun State, I hereby declare the indefinite suspension of the NANS JCC Osun Axis election until further notice,” the letter stated.

The NANS President consequently directed the Caretaker Committee to immediately halt all activities relating to the election and ensure strict compliance with the suspension pending further communication from the national leadership.

He assured stakeholders that the national leadership would, in due course, engage with the interim leadership overseeing the affairs of the Osun JCC on the next line of action regarding the electoral process.

Afeez reaffirmed the association’s commitment to the ideals of NANS, stressing that the protection of lives and property remains a top priority.

The letter was also copied to the Zonal Coordinator of NANS Zone D for necessary action.
