…Calls on security agencies, public to take notice as NDC candidate begins campaign

Former Deputy President of the 9th Senate, Senator Ovie Omo-Agege, has raised the alarm over what he described as “disturbing and increasingly credible threats” to his life and those of his family members, alleging that the threats are emanating from the Delta State Government House in Asaba.
Omo-Agege, who is the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate for the Delta Central Senatorial District in the 2027 general elections, raised the alarm in a statement as he commenced his campaign activities in the district.
The former senator said his campaign would commence with stops in Uvwie Local Government Area before proceeding to the other seven local government areas that make up the Delta Central Senatorial District.
He called on the Nigerian public, international community, civil society organisations, the media and security agencies to take formal notice of the alleged threats.
Omo-Agege specifically alleged that the threats were coming from the Delta State Government House and named Governor Sheriff Oborevwori as the person he should be held responsible if anything untoward happened to him or members of his family.
He said: “I note with grave concern the disturbing and increasingly credible threats to my life and my family members in Delta State emanating from the Delta State Government House, Asaba.
“As I commence the campaigns, beginning today with stops in Uvwie Local Government Area, and the other seven (7) Local Government Areas, I want the Nigerian public, the international community, civil-society organisations, the media, and all security agencies to take formal notice:
“Should anything untoward happens to me or members of my family, the Nigerian people and more particularly the Urhobo people of Delta Central senatorial district should HOLD the Governor of Delta State Elder Sheriff Oborevwori responsible and accountable.”
The allegation comes amid heightened political rivalry between Omo-Agege and Governor Oborevwori ahead of the 2027 elections.
Omo-Agege resigned from the All Progressives Congress in May 2026 after losing the party’s Delta Central senatorial primary to the incumbent senator, Ede Dafinone. He subsequently joined the Nigeria Democratic Congress and declared his intention to contest the Delta Central Senate seat under the party.
The political relationship between Omo-Agege and Oborevwori has also become increasingly contentious. In June, Oborevwori said Omo-Agege was not a threat to his political ambitions, while Omo-Agege subsequently responded to the governor’s comments and accused him of reneging on political arrangements.
The latest statement by Omo-Agege did not provide specific details of the alleged threats or identify the individuals allegedly behind them. He, however, formally brought the matter to the attention of the public, security agencies, civil society organisations and the media.
Delta Central Senatorial District comprises eight local government areas: Ethiope East, Ethiope West, Okpe, Sapele, Ughelli North, Ughelli South, Udu and Uvwie.
Omo-Agege, who represented Delta Central in the Senate from 2015 to 2023 and served as Deputy President of the 9th Senate between 2019 and 2023, is now seeking a return to the Senate on the platform of the NDC.
His latest warning is expected to further intensify political attention around the Delta Central senatorial contest as campaigns and grassroots mobilisation gather momentum ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Omo-Agege urged the public and security agencies to take the alleged threats seriously, while placing responsibility for his safety and that of his family squarely before Governor Oborevwori should anything untoward occur.
