NANS Mourns Ex-AKSU SUG President, Calls for Investigation into Death at NYSC Camp

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has expressed grief over the death of Comrade Etimbuk Daniel, the immediate past Students’ Union Government (SUG) President of Akwa Ibom State University (AKSU), who reportedly died at the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) orientation camp in Enugu State.

NANS President, Comrade Akinteye Babatunde Afeez, described the news of Daniel’s death as shocking and painful, extending condolences to his family, friends, colleagues and the entire university community.

In a condolence statement, Akinteye said information available to the association indicated that the deceased had complained of a headache and was subsequently administered medication, after which his condition reportedly deteriorated.

He added that Daniel had allegedly requested to be taken to a hospital, but the necessary approval was reportedly delayed, resulting in his death before he could receive medical attention.

The NANS president further disclosed that the association had received information that a doctor later identified the drugs administered to the deceased as fake.

He, however, stressed that the allegations surrounding the circumstances of Daniel’s death required a thorough investigation to establish the facts and determine whether there were lapses in the medical response or other circumstances that contributed to the tragedy.

“These are deeply troubling allegations that require a thorough investigation to establish the circumstances surrounding his tragic death,” Akinteye said.

The student body expressed concern over the dangers posed by fake and substandard drugs, describing the incident as a painful reminder of the need for accountability, timely access to medical care and stronger safeguards to protect young Nigerians.

Akinteye said NANS was mourning the loss and would communicate its further actions and official position on the matter in due course.

He also extended the association’s condolences to the government and people of Akwa Ibom State, the NANS community and fellow student activists, praying that God would grant the bereaved family and the entire student community the strength to bear the loss.

The NANS president called for support and solidarity with the deceased’s loved ones during the difficult period, describing Daniel’s death as an irreparable loss to his family, friends and the student movement.

He prayed for the peaceful repose of the deceased, saying, “May the soul of Comrade Etimbuk Daniel rest in perfect peace.”

The circumstances surrounding the reported death and the allegations concerning the medication administered to him have yet to be independently established.
