
Kebbi Government Declares War On Cyber Fraud, Vows To Dismantle “Yan Vocal” Syndicate
The Kebbi State Government has, exoressed concern over the activities of an emerging cybercrime syndicate known as “Yan Vocal” operating in Argungu Local Government Area and has reaffirmed its commitment to protecting residents from cyber-related crimes.
According to intelligence reports, the group, comprising mainly youths between the ages of 19 and 24, is allegedly involved in hacking social media accounts, creating fake online identities, and using blackmail, threats and other fraudulent tactics to extort money from victims.
The syndicate allegedly targets users on Facebook, WhatsApp, TikTok and other social media platforms by manipulating video calls, photographs and explicit content to intimidate victims into making financial payments. Investigations indicate that prominent individuals, including political office holders, traditional and religious leaders, as well as business owners within and outside Nigeria, have been targeted.
Preliminary investigations have identified 19 suspected members, while security agencies have uncovered the group’s operational methods, meeting points and channels for receiving illicit proceeds through digital financial platforms.
The Kebbi State Government assured the public that security agencies are actively working to dismantle the network and bring all those involved to justice.
Residents are advised to remain vigilant online by safeguarding their personal information, avoiding suspicious online accounts and promptly reporting cases of cyber extortion or online blackmail to the relevant security agencies.
The Government will continue to strengthen collaboration with security agencies, financial institutions, telecommunications providers and community stakeholders to combat cybercrime and promote responsible digital behaviour.
