Abuja – The President of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Comrade Akinteye Babatunde Afeez, has presented his first-month scorecard in office, highlighting interventions in student welfare, advocacy, security, and institutional engagement across the country.
In a New Month message addressed to Nigerian students on Wednesday, Akinteye described the commencement of the second half of the year as an opportunity to reflect on his administration’s stewardship since assuming office.
The NANS President said his leadership has remained committed to representing the interests of students through strategic engagements, partnerships, and programmes aimed at improving their welfare.
Among the achievements listed was the association’s intervention in the abduction of students and teachers in Orire Local Government Area of Oyo State. He said NANS engaged the Oyo State Government and security agencies while also visiting the affected communities to sympathise with victims and advocate for their safe rescue.
Akinteye also disclosed that the association successfully secured the reinstatement of suspended students of the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH), as well as the reinstatement of the Students’ Union Government President of the Federal University Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE).
According to him, the association intervened during the 2026 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) by raising concerns over the prolonged stay of candidates at examination centres, particularly in areas facing security challenges.
He further revealed that NANS established and inaugurated standing committees to monitor interventions and projects of agencies including the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund), Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), North East Development Commission (NEDC), and the Industrial Training Fund (ITF), with the aim of ensuring students benefit from government-funded initiatives.
The student leader also listed engagements with the Ebonyi State Government on students’ welfare and the organisation of a nationwide Democracy Day Walk as part of efforts to promote national unity and democratic values.
On partnerships, Akinteye said discussions with the Managing Director of Tantita Security Services Nigeria Limited, High Chief Kestin Ebimorbowie Pondi, yielded scholarship opportunities for Nigerian students, employment opportunities for stakeholders, and mobility support.
He added that the association has continued to press for transparency and prompt resolution of reported discrepancies in the disbursement of student upkeep allowances under the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND).
Reaffirming his administration’s commitment to student advocacy, the NANS President assured Nigerian students that their interests would remain the priority of his leadership.
He urged students to remain focused on academic excellence, innovation, and national development, while wishing them a fulfilling and productive new month.
