The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has extended the deadline for the submission of lists of candidates by political parties for the 2027 Presidential and National Assembly elections.
The electoral umpire announced that the deadline, which was earlier scheduled to end on Saturday, July 11, 2026, has now been extended to midnight on Tuesday, July 14, 2026.
INEC said the decision followed an appeal by the Inter Party Advisory Council (IPAC) on behalf of political parties that were unable to upload the names and personal particulars of their candidates within the stipulated timeframe.
In a statement issued on Sunday by the National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, Mohammed Kudu Haruna, the Commission said the extension was aimed at ensuring inclusivity while remaining within the provisions of the law.
“The extension underscores the Commission’s commitment to ensuring inclusivity in its practices, while acting within the ambit of the law,” the statement read.
The Commission urged all political parties yet to complete the nomination process to take advantage of the extension and ensure that the names and required details of their candidates are uploaded before the new deadline expires.
INEC reiterated that no further extension should be expected and advised political parties to comply with the revised timeline to avoid forfeiting the opportunity to field candidates in the affected elections.
