The Ondo State Police Command will on Saturday commence a statewide enforcement of traffic laws alongside a weapon proficiency shooting exercise for police constables in Akure.
The command announced this in separate statements issued on Friday by its Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Abayomi Jimoh.
The traffic enforcement, which is in line with a directive of the Inspector General of Police, IGP Olatunji Disu, is aimed at curbing road crashes, easing traffic congestion and ensuring compliance with traffic regulations across the state.
The police warned motorists, commercial drivers, tricycle operators, motorcyclists and other road users against reckless driving, speeding, overloading, driving against traffic and using mobile phones while driving.
They were also urged to obey traffic signs and signals, ensure their vehicles were roadworthy and properly registered, and carry valid driving and vehicle documents.
The command said personnel deployed for the exercise had been directed to conduct themselves professionally and within the law.
It warned that officers found engaging in extortion, harassment or other forms of misconduct would face disciplinary action.
Meanwhile, police constables in the command will undergo a weapon proficiency shooting exercise at the Police Shooting Range, Shasha, Akure.
The exercise is part of a comprehensive training programme designed to improve officers’ firearm handling, marksmanship, tactical response and compliance with standard operating procedures.
The command urged residents around Shasha not to panic over gunshots that may be heard during the exercise, stressing that the sounds would be from the scheduled training.
It, however, advised residents, commuters and motorists to stay away from the shooting range and its immediate surroundings for the duration of the exercise.
The police called for public cooperation, urging residents to report any unprofessional conduct by personnel through established complaint channels.
The command reaffirmed its commitment to professional policing and the protection of lives and property across Ondo State.
