Ese-Akoko Residents Plan Peaceful Protest Over Decades of Road Neglect
Residents of Ese-Akoko in Akoko North-West Local Government Area of Ondo State have announced plans to embark on a peaceful demonstration to draw government attention to the deplorable state of roads linking their community to neighbouring towns. In a formal notification addressed to the Ondo State Commissioner of Police, the group under the banner of Ese Akoko Transformation Agenda Forum stated that the peaceful protest will take place at 11 a.m. on Monday, November 3, 2025, at the open space opposite the Governor’s Office, Alagbaka, Akure.According to the letter signed by Elder Joseph Arowosegbe (Chairman), Dr. Famuwagun Ayodele (Secretary), and Dr. Niyi Awotomilusi (Member), the people of Ese-Akoko have been enduring decades of neglect over the dilapidated roads connecting the town to Irun, Ogbagi, and Afin-Akoko.The group expressed appreciation to the Ondo State Commissioner of Police for his continued efforts in maintaining peace and order across the state, describing his achievements as “remarkable and laudable.” However, they stressed that the people of Ese-Akoko have been left with no option but to take to the streets peacefully after several failed attempts to get the government’s attention. “This demonstration becomes our last resort to express our pain to the government. We are only asking that the state comes to our rescue and rehabilitates the roads that have become death traps,” the group stated. The letter, which was copied to relevant stakeholders including the Divisional Police Officer (DPO), Irun Police Division; Hon. Taofik Oladele Mohammed, Chairman of Irun/Ogbagi LCDA; Hon. Felix Afe, member representing Akoko North-West Constituency II at the Ondo State House of Assembly; and Hon. Esan Owolabi, Chairman of Akoko North-West Local Government, urged the authorities to support and ensure a hitch-free protest. The Ese-Akoko Transformation Agenda Forum emphasized that the planned demonstration would be peaceful, maintaining that their only demand is for the state government to prioritize and commence reconstruction of the long-neglected roads.Residents say the poor condition of the roads has crippled economic activities, made transportation difficult, and isolated the community from essential services, especially during the rainy season. -

Afenifere: The True Heir to Awolowo’s Welfarist Legacy — Pa Fasoranti’s Group as Shadow-Chasing Dissidents
Afenifere, as a sociopolitical and economic organisation, is as old as the Action Group (AG), the political party founded by the late sage, Chief Obafemi Awolowo, and his associates in 1951. From inception, the party had a national outlook, though its core membership was drawn largely from the defunct Ẹgbẹ Ọmọ Odùduwà.The leadership of the Action Group translated its vision into what became known as Afenifere, built around Awolowo’s cardinal programmes of free education, free healthcare, rural electrification and development, and life more abundant for all. Supporters and the Yoruba electorate affectionately referred to the party as Ẹgbẹ ọlọpẹ, “the palm frond group”, after the palm frond logo of the party.Contrary to distorted narratives, the Action Group/Afenifere was never a tribal party. Among its notable non-Yoruba members were Pa Anthony Enahoro, Ernest Okoli, Samuel Ikoku and others. It was the deliberate distortion and falsification of historical facts by political detractors that falsely painted the AG/Afenifere as an ethnic Yoruba organisation. In reality, the Action Group was a welfarist party, whose ideology of social democracy was formally adopted at its Jos Convention of 1962.However, this convention also witnessed the first major crack within the party, leading to the Premier of Western Region, Chief Ladoke Akintola’s faction breaking away to form the Nigerian National Democratic Party (NNDP), which later allied with the Northern People’s Congress (NPC) to form the Nigerian National Alliance (NNA) for the 1964/1965 general elections. Meanwhile, the Action Group joined forces with the NCNC to form the United Progressive Grand Alliance (UPGA).The Unity Party of Nigeria (UPN) emerged later as the political offshoot of the Action Group, just as the Alliance for Democracy (AD) and the Democratic Peoples Alliance (DPA) would later spring from the same ideological root.During General Ibrahim Babangida’s prolonged military transition to civil rule, Afenifere members participated in the Social Democratic Party (SDP) — one of the two political parties imposed by the regime after proscribing the political formations earlier established by the people.Under the SDP, Chief M.K.O. Abiola won the historic June 12, 1993 Presidential Election, which was subsequently annulled by Babangida. In the ensuing struggle to reclaim Abiola’s mandate, Afenifere joined forces with other progressive platforms, civil society groups, and individuals to form the National Democratic Coalition (NADECO), under the leadership of Pa Adekunle Ajasin, then the leader of Afenifere.Pa Ajasin did not live to see the dawn of civil rule, and leadership passed to Pa Abraham Adesanya, under whose stewardship Afenifere and the Alliance for Democracy (AD) swept the six southwestern states in the 1999 elections. It was under the AD platform that Bola Ahmed Tinubu, now Nigeria’s President, became Governor of Lagos State. However, internal crises soon engulfed the AD and, by extension, Afenifere. The “No more Baba sọpe” rebellion against Afenifere leadership led to a splinter group, the Afenifere Renewal Group (ARG), led by Hon. Wale Osun, who continues to head the faction to this day. Tinubu was widely believed to have masterminded this split. When Pa Reuben Fasoranti succeeded Pa Abraham Adesanya as leader of Afenifere, Tinubu continued to bankroll the splinter faction. As age and health challenges set in, Pa Fasoranti voluntarily stepped aside, handing leadership to Pa Ayo Adebanjo, while Oba Oladipo Olaitan was appointed as Deputy Leader. The renewed attempt to polarise Afenifere began when the group, in line with its long-standing advocacy for justice, fairness, and equity, supported an Igbo presidential candidate, arguing that it was the turn of the Southeast (Ndigbo) to produce Nigeria’s president. Having realised the potential political weight of Pa Adebanjo’s principled stance, one capable of swaying Yoruba votes away from him, Bola Tinubu, whose splinter faction lacked grassroots legitimacy, sought to undermine Afenifere’s unity.Tinubu’s visit to Akure, the home of the voluntarily retired Pa Fasoranti, was widely seen as an attempt to either secure endorsement or sow further division within the Yoruba political fold.Ironically, Tinubu returned to the very structure he once sought to weaken. Yet, like Amalinze the Cat in Chinua Achebe’s Things Fall Apart, Afenifere refused to die.The secretive meeting between Pa Fasoranti and Tinubu marked an unprecedented reversal of Afenifere’s leadership principles, with the former leader appearing to stage a Tinubu-sponsored comeback to challenge his own chosen successor, Pa Adebanjo.Nevertheless, Afenifere under Pa Adebanjo stood firm in its support for Peter Obi, the Labour Party candidate, as a matter of conscience and fairness. Following Pa Adebanjo’s passing early last year, Tinubu’s political machinery again attempted to take over Afenifere, but failed. The National Caucus of Afenifere unanimously endorsed Oba Oladipo Olaitan as its new National Leader.Frustrated by this outcome, Senator Femi Okunrounmu and others loyal to Tinubu retreated to Akure, continuing their manipulation of the aged Pa Fasoranti. The so-called Afenifere stakeholders’ jamboree held in Akure represents, in the words of the late Professor Eskor Toyo, “starting from a repeated start.”While the Akure faction has every right to assemble and endorse Bola Ahmed Tinubu and his neoliberal, anti-poor policies, it is grossly misleading to claim to speak for or represent Afenifere. That faction long abandoned the ideals and philosophy of social welfarism, the principles Chief Obafemi Awolowo lived and died for.Today, the Awoist philosophy remains alive and steadfast under the legitimate leadership of Oba Oladipo Olaitan, the National Leader of Afenifere. Any other group parading itself as Afenifere is nothing but a band of pretenders and impostors, shadow-chasing dissidents estranged from the true welfarist spirit of Awolowo’s Afenifere.Comrade Wale BalogunConvener, Mekunnu KoyaWrites from Lagos. -

Otito Atikase; Deputy DG, Ondo South, Hon. Afolabi Iwalewa; and AMG Secretary, Hon. Owo Youths Slam APC Spokesman Over “Disrespect” To Deputy Governor, Demand Unity In Local Politics
…call on Ondo APC leadership to restore discipline in Owo chapterA fresh crisis is brewing within the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Owo Local Government Area as the Progressive Youth Forum (PYF), Owo, has accused the party’s local Publicity Secretary, Dr. Idowu Ojo, of disrespecting the office of the Deputy Governor and promoting division within the ranks of the party. In a strongly worded statement issued on Sunday and signed by the forum, the youths expressed deep concern over what they described as reckless conduct and unguarded utterances by certain political actors in Owo, alleging that such actions are eroding the values and unity that have long defined the town’s politics. The group particularly condemned Dr. Ojo’s recent press release, which they said deliberately rearranged recognition by placing appointees before the Deputy Governor in an appreciation message, an act they described as a calculated insult meant to ridicule the number two citizen of the state, who hails from Owo.According to the PYF, the move was not an error but a deliberate attempt to sow discord and undermine the office of the Deputy Governor before the public.“What we are witnessing is not mere politics; it is a systematic erosion of respect, hierarchy, and the collective values that have long bound us together as a people,” the statement read in part. The group accused certain individuals within the APC of prioritizing personal ambition and blind loyalty to political benefactors over the collective interest of Owo and its people.“Owo youths will not stand by while political jobbers trade our unity for crumbs of temporary favour. We reject the politics of worship, the politics of puppetry, and the politics of division disguised as loyalty,” the forum declared. The youths also called on the leadership of the APC in Ondo State to take urgent steps to restore order and discipline within the Owo chapter before this cancer of disrespect eats deep into the foundation of local politics, warning that the current situation could harm the party’s electoral chances in future polls.Reaffirming their loyalty to the ideals of unity and progress, the PYF reminded party members that Owo’s political heritage was built on integrity, intellect, and courage which are values championed by figures like the late Pa Adekunle Ajasin and the late Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, SAN.“Owo has always been known for political sophistication, not servitude. We cannot allow the sacrifices of our forebears to be tarnished by a handful of opportunists seeking validation through mischief,” the statement added. The forum concluded with a firm declaration that enough of the division, enough of the manipulation, and enough of the disrespect. It demanded a return to decency, dialogue, and the pursuit of the common good, stating that Owo is greater than any individual and that history will not be kind to those who trade her peace for their personal ambition. The Ondo APC leadership has yet to issue an official response to the concerns raised by the youth group as of the time of filing this report. -

Aiyedatiwa Under Fire As PDP Condemns Political Exploitation Of Students
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ondo State has accused Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa of presiding over the steady collapse of the education sector in the state, describing his recent pronouncement at Rufus Giwa Polytechnic, Owo, as another empty promise meant to exploit students for political gain.
In a statement issued by the party’s Publicity Secretary, Barr. Jolade Aladetan, the PDP said the governor’s appearance at the institution’s Convocation ceremony on Saturday was yet another publicity stunt lacking sincerity and substance. The party recalled that about 18 months ago, Aiyedatiwa publicly announced the approval of ₦1.2 billion for projects at Olusegun Agagu University of Science and Technology, Okitipupa (OAUSTECH), but to date, not a single kobo has been released and no project has materialized.
Aladetan noted that this recurring pattern of unfulfilled promises has become the defining character of Aiyedatiwa’s administration. He lamented that tertiary institutions across the state are now symbols of neglect, poor funding, and infrastructural decay, while lecturers remain demoralized and students continue to learn under deplorable conditions. He added that instead of addressing these deep-rooted challenges, the governor has resorted to using schools and students as tools for political image laundering.
The PDP condemned what it described as deliberate deception and insensitivity by the current administration, accusing Aiyedatiwa of chasing headlines and photo opportunities rather than providing genuine leadership. The party said the governor’s approach to education has eroded the state’s once enviable academic reputation and endangered the future of thousands of young people.
“The future of Ondo State depends on the strength of its schools, not on empty promises or political theatrics,” Aladetan said. “Governor Aiyedatiwa’s failure to back his words with action has become a clear demonstration of misplaced priorities and disregard for the future of our youths. The people of Ondo deserve better.”

Ondo Police Bust Baby Factory, Smash Kidnapping Syndicate In Major Security Breakthrough
...five pregnant girls rescued, three suspects arrested as CP Lawal orders full-scale investigation
The Ondo State Police Command has recorded two major security breakthroughs with the uncovering of a suspected baby factory and human trafficking syndicate in Ore, as well as the arrest of members of a notorious kidnapping gang operating along major highways in the South-West region.
According to two separate statements signed by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Ayanlade Olayinka Olushola, the twin operations underscore the renewed determination of the Command under Commissioner of Police, CP Adebowale Lawal, to rid the state of criminal elements and safeguard lives and property.
The first operation, which exposed the baby factory, followed the distress report of a 17-year-old pregnant girl, identified as Vivian Peter from Akwa Ibom State. She was reportedly trafficked to Ore under the guise of being offered a job but later found herself trapped in a facility where young pregnant girls were allegedly held until delivery, after which their babies were sold.
DSP Ayanlade said the girl managed to escape and reported the incident at Ore Division, prompting a swift raid on the facility by operatives of the Command’s Gender-Based Violence Unit. The raid led to the rescue of five pregnant girls and a baby boy. One of the victims had already given birth and is receiving post-natal care at the General Hospital, Ore, while the others are in protective custody.
Preliminary investigation revealed that the operator of the baby factory, identified as Ada Clement, and her accomplices confessed to selling babies for prices ranging from ₦400,000 to ₦600,000 depending on gender, with male children fetching higher sums.
Reacting to the discovery, CP Adebowale Lawal described the incident as “a horrifying reminder of the depths of human exploitation,” and ordered a comprehensive investigation to ensure all members of the trafficking ring are arrested and prosecuted. He added that detectives are already on the trail of other fleeing suspects linked to the syndicate.
In a separate operation, operatives of the State Anti-Kidnapping Section (SAKS), Akure, arrested a 20-year-old suspect, Abdullahi Ibrahim, believed to be part of a kidnapping syndicate responsible for several abductions along the Benin–Ore and Sagamu–Lagos expressways.
Following credible intelligence, the suspect was apprehended in Ore and reportedly confessed to belonging to a gang that operates across several southern states, targeting travelers along major highways. His confession led detectives to Benin City, Edo State, where two other members of the gang were arrested.
The suspects are currently in custody and assisting investigators with vital information to apprehend other fleeing gang members.
Commending his men for the successful operations, CP Lawal praised their professionalism and diligence, noting that the Command will not relent in its efforts to dismantle criminal networks operating within and around the state.
He reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to the directives of the Inspector General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, Ph.D., NPM, in ensuring the fight against human trafficking, kidnapping, and gender-based violence is pursued with renewed vigor.
“The safety and dignity of every resident remain our top priority,” CP Lawal stated, urging the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to the nearest police formation.
Both incidents, coming just days apart, have been hailed as clear evidence of the Ondo State Police Command’s intensified campaign against organized crime.

TENSION IN AKUNGBA AS STUDENTS’ UNION AND PALACE CLASH OVER PROPAGANDA AUDIO AND ROAD TRAGEDY
A deepening controversy has erupted in Akungba following the release of an audio recording allegedly made by the President of the Adekunle Ajasin University Students’ Union, Comrade Salami Akeem, popularly known as Ologbon. The recording, which the Palace of the Alale of Akungbaland described as propaganda, was purportedly meant to defend himself over recent criticisms but has instead sparked outrage for allegedly maligning the traditional institution.
The uproar comes in the aftermath of the tragic truck accident that occurred on Wednesday, October 22, 2025, along the Akungba–Okerigbo axis, a route that had earlier been declared permanently closed to heavy-duty vehicles following a joint security resolution. The Palace of the Alale of Akungbaland, in a press statement issued through its Media and Publicity Unit, accused the student leader of distorting facts and politicizing a tragedy that claimed innocent lives.
According to the Palace, a crucial meeting was held on Saturday, October 18, 2025, at the Alale’s Residential Palace with representatives of the Students’ Union, the Okerigbo community, and the Divisional Police Officer. The meeting, presided over by the Palace leadership, resolved to barricade the Okerigbo route using laterite or Adcor materials to prevent trucks from passing. The DPO reportedly contacted the supervising engineer, who immediately carried out the directive, after which the padlock used to secure the barricade was handed over to the Students’ Union President.
The Palace stated that from that moment, the responsibility for monitoring and maintaining the barricade rested with the Students’ Union and the engineer, while the DPO was fully aware of the arrangement. It therefore declared that any incident that occurred after October 18 should be accounted for by those responsible. The Palace condemned the Students’ Union President’s audio as an attempt to shift blame, mislead the public, and undermine a Palace that has consistently prioritized the safety and welfare of both students and residents.
The Palace further alleged that the Ondo State NANS JCC Chairman, Comrade Mayomi Adekanye, popularly known as INEC, had been inciting protests against the Palace even before the fatal incident. It claimed that his actions were influenced by personal motives connected to a chieftaincy dispute within his family, rather than any genuine concern for the students. The Alale of Akungbaland, His Royal Majesty Oba Oseni Isiaka Adu, Agure I, reiterated that while peaceful demonstrations are acceptable in a democracy, the Palace must not be dragged into political intrigues or propaganda capable of threatening the peace and unity of the community.
In a swift and fiery response, the Students’ Union President, Comrade Salami Akeem, dismissed the Palace’s claims as false, misleading, and defamatory. In a counter-statement titled *A Clarification on Recent Events and Counters Baseless Allegations from Akungba Palace*, the Union leader accused certain individuals affiliated with the Palace of corruption, extortion, and negligence in managing the road closure.
According to him, during the October 18 meeting, the Palace admitted that a spare key to the barricade padlock had been lost, but evidence later showed that individuals known as “palace boys” retained control of the key and allegedly used it to collect bribes from truck drivers seeking passage. He claimed that the Palace’s oversight had been compromised by these corrupt acts, which effectively turned the barricade into an illegal toll point.
The Union leader explained that the Students’ Union took decisive action to secure the barricade and prevent further abuse. He asserted that since then, the Union had maintained strict vigilance, ensuring that no trucks were allowed through. He further alleged that one of the palace boys was caught attempting to facilitate unauthorized access and was promptly handed over to the police.
Comrade Akeem maintained that the Union has gathered credible evidence, including a voice recording and video footage, which identifies individuals involved in the alleged extortion scheme. He said the materials would be submitted to the police and anti-corruption agencies for investigation. He accused the Palace of trying to divert attention from the real issues of corruption and negligence that contributed to the tragic loss of lives, insisting that the Students’ Union remains committed to transparency, accountability, and the safety of students and residents.
He called on the Alale of Akungbaland to launch a transparent investigation into the activities of his aides rather than smear the reputation of student leaders. The Union, he added, would continue to pursue justice and uphold its duty to protect students through lawful means despite efforts to silence it.
The heated exchange between the Palace and the Students’ Union has sparked tension across Akungba, with residents and students divided over the matter. Many community members have called for an independent probe to establish the truth about the management of the road closure and the events leading up to the deadly truck accident.
