Senator Akpabio denies link with Niger Delta Avengers

    Read the press statement below…

The Senate Minority Leader, Senator Godswill Akpabio has denied being
the sponsor of the militant group, the Niger Delta Avengers or any other
    militant group for that matter.

A recent online publication had alleged that a splinter group, the
Reformed Niger Delta Avengers had claimed Senator Akpabio and other
eminent Nigerians were the sponsors of the group.

But a release signed by the Special Assistant on Media to the Senate
Minority Leader, Mr Anietie Ekong described the publication as
“baseless, reckless and senseless. It is a fabrication from the pit of
hell from those who are profiteering from the crisis in the Niger Delta
and would wish no end to it.”

According to the press statement, “for the avoidance of doubt, we wish
to state categorically that Senator Akpabio has no link with the Niger
Delta Avengers or any other militant group for that matter.

“Contrarily, the position of Senator Akpabio as a foremost advocate of
dialogue in resolving the Niger Delta crisis is well known. He is of the
strong belief that blowing up pipelines and causing further
environmental pollution of the Niger Delta is not in the interest of the
region as it would take over 100 years to remediate the effects of such
    environmental degradation.

“Neither does he believe that economic sabotage at a time of economic
recession that the nation is presently passing through can be an answer
    to the Niger Delta problem.

“His abhorrence of violence in conflict resolution is legendary.
Therefore it beats our imagination why anybody in a right frame of mind
would contemplate associating his name with militancy and degradation of
a region he had laboured so much to build while serving as Governor of
Akwa Ibom State between 2007 and 2015.

“Coming from Sahara Reporters, we take it as one in a series of
falsehood they have fabricated against Senator Akpabio. We recall the
national uproar which followed a similar concoction on December 10, 2015
when Sahara Reporters “authoritatively confirmed” that Senator Akpabio
had been sacked from the Senate by an Appeal Court which had not even
delivered its judgment at the time of the publication. It turned out to
be a hoax when the election of Senator Akpabio was later upheld by the
    Appeal Court,” the statement said.

It cautioned that politicizing the Niger Delta crisis through propaganda
will amount to an ill wind that will blow nobody any good.

“Rather what the nation needs is concerted efforts by stakeholders to
holistically through dialogue address the grievances of the region which
luckily President Muhammadu Buhari has already started,” it concluded.

apologised to players and officials of Nigeria’s Olympic football team
for the challenges they faced, leading to their late arrival in Brazil
    for the Rio Olympics.

Dream Team VI defeat Sweden in Manaus on Sunday to reach the quarter
finals of the tournament, according to a statement by the Spokesperson
of the Nigeria Football Federation, Ademola Olajire, on Monday.

Dalung, a conspicuous presence in the stands as the 1996 champions
pipped Europe’s best team Sweden in Manaus on Sunday night to reach the

    Nigeria.

Dalung watched the match in company with Nigeria’s Ambassador
Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to Brazil, Adamu Emozozo, and the
Permanent Secretary in the ministry, Mr. Chinyeaka Ohaa.

  • Olympics: Marta shines for Brazil as fans boo Neymar

Olympics: Marta shines for Brazil as fans boo Neymar

Goalless, booed off twice and facing
another embarrassing tournament exit on home soil, Neymar and Brazil’s
footballers have lost their shine as Marta’s free-scoring Brazilian
women dazzle the host nation at Rio 2016.

    Marta, Neymar
    Charged with restoring Brazilian
football’s pride two years on from a 7-1 thrashing by Germany at their
own World Cup, the Barcelona star and his proteges stooped to new lows
with their second consecutive scoreless draw against Iraq on Sunday to a
    chorus of jeers in Brasilia.

    Instead Brazil’s treasured first Olympic
football gold could come thanks to their women as a nation in need of
inspiration has rallied round their sensational start.
In contrast to Neymar’s ineffectual and
irritable displays, five-time World Player of the Year Marta has lived
up to her billing as the golden girl, scoring twice in a 5-1 thrashing
of Sweden on Saturday to add to an opening 3-0 win over China.
Marta is even becoming a stick to beat
the beleaguered men’s team with. In the closing stages of the stalemate
against Iraq, her name was chanted by the disgruntled crowd.
“The team has lost credit with the public,” Rio newspaper O Globo surmised on Monday.
“They lost their head and balance. At 0-0 against the Iraqis, they were booed then humiliated with cries of ‘ole’ for Marta.”
Neymar’s decision to swerve the media
glare after another disappointing display even provoked fresh questions
over whether he has the discipline and leadership qualities to be
    captain.
“When waiting for an announcement from
the captain of Brazil, Neymar, on the outcome there was no explanation,”
    said ESPN Brazil.
“It was enough to rekindle once again the debate on the armband.”
Neymar instead trudged out of the
Estadio Nacional Mane Garrincha and onto the team bus head bowed and
headphones on to drown out critical comments.
The contrast to the night before
couldn’t have been starker as hundreds of young girls waited outside
Rio’s Olympic stadium until 1am screaming Marta’s name as she boarded
    the Brazil women’s bus.
Marta’s starring role against the Swedes
also came just 24 hours after she was selected as one of eight
Brazilians carry the Olympic flag into the iconic Maracana at the
    opening ceremony.
“Marta never takes advantage of the fact she is who she is to get favours,” said Brazilian women’s coach Vadao.
“She always sees herself on the same
level as the other players and nothing more. That is what makes her so
special because she never tries to be more than the others.”
Brazil’s women are already assured of
their place in the quarter-finals as Marta tries to get back to the
Maracana for the gold medal match on August 19.
The men meanwhile face a third catastrophic end to a tournament on home soil.
Defeat to Uruguay in the 1950 World Cup
final at the Maracana scarred Brazilian football for generations until
the Germans’ rout in Belo Horizonte plunged A Selecao to new depths two
    years ago.
Failing to get out of a group containing
South Africa, Iraq and Denmark with on paper the strongest team in the
competition may even surpass those historic failures.
Victory over the Danes on Wednesday will
secure progress to the last eight, but it will take much more to win
back the hearts of Brazil’s scorned fans.

EFCC arrests blogger over anti-Magu story

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has arrested popular
blogger, Mr. Abubakar Sidiqu Usman, otherwise known as Abusidiqu, over a
recent report he published against the Chairman of the EFCC, Mr.
    Ibrahim Magu.

Friends of the blogger who reached out to The PUNCH said he was arrested by EFCC operatives early on Monday morning.

Confirming the arrest, the EFCC spokesman, Mr. Wilson Uwujaren, said the blogger was arrested for cyber stalking. In a statement, Uwujaren said, “The EFCC today arrested Mr. Abubakar
Sidiq Usman, a blogger, for offences bordering on cyber stalking.

“The suspect who is the publisher of Abusidiqu.com was picked up at
his Kubwa, Abuja home in the early hours of Monday August 8, 2016 by

    false messages online.

    Usman’s blog, Abusidiqu.com,
published a report titled, ‘EFCC boss, Magu, commences total war with
core EFCC staff’ on August 2, 2016.

The report stated that members of staff at the EFCC were complaining that they were being bullied by Magu.

It accused Magu of corruption, and of being jittery about the delay in his confirmation by the Senate.

  • ‘Unmask real faces behind Niger Delta Avengers’

‘Unmask real faces behind Niger Delta Avengers’

The President of the splinter group of the Ijaw Youth Council
Worldwide, Mr. Elvis Donkemezuo, has called on the security agencies to
intensify efforts to fish out real faces behind the Niger Delta
    Avengers’ mask.
Donkemezuo, who made the call in a statement on Monday, urged the NDA to leave IYC and the Ijaw nation out of their antics.

    Niger Delta Avengers

He said his group had been intimated on reports in an online medium
containing a statement from a faceless group, the Reformed Niger Delta
Avengers, by a pseudonym, Cynthia Whyte, that named some Niger Delta
leaders as sponsors of the NDA.

He said, “But for the fact that our noble organisation, the IYC, was
mentioned in relation to our erstwhile interim President, Udengs
Eradiri, which the RNDA claimed  is also known as ‘Brigadier General
Murdoch Agbinibo’ and ‘serves as the NDA’s chief spokesman’ and the
enormity of our ignoring  this lame attempt at linking the IYC to the
hostilities of the Avengers, we would not have dignified them with a
    response.
“Nonetheless, given that our silence would mislead the unsuspecting
public and embolden the source of the publication,  we have decided to
    set the records straight.

“For the sake of clarity, we want to state unequivocally that Eradiri
is no longer the President of the IYC. IYC is not Eradiri’s private
estate. Therefore, we urge those who have personal or business quarrels
with him not to drag the name of the Council into their tussles.

“The IYC and the entire Ijaw nation distance ourselves from the NDA
and any splinter group from it as well as all their sponsors. Moreso,
for the avoidance of doubt, we want the world to know that although we
do not know who the NDA are, we are confident that they are not Ijaw
people and do not speak for the Ijaw or the Niger Delta region.”

Meanwhile, the embattled President, IYC, Mr. Udengs Eradiri, has
distanced himself from an allegation that he was a member and
    spokesperson for the NDA.

Eradiri said as a leader of the influential Ijaw socio-cultural
group, he had on many occasions spoken against a violent approach to
    achieving the Niger Delta struggle.

He insisted that he would continue to speak against the militant
group with a firm belief that only dialogue, with genuine leaders, would
resolve the problems in the region.

A NDA splinter group, the RNDA, had in a statement claimed that
Eradiri was speaking for the group using the pseudonym
    ‘Brigadier-General’ Murdoch Agbinibo.

However,  Eradiri, who spoke in Yenagoa, on Sunday, said he was not
surprised that his name was being dragged in the mire because of his
unwavering position on the region’s crisis and the way forward.
The IYC boss accused the promoters of the Movement for Emancipation
of Niger Delta of deliberate efforts to blackmail him for opposing their
    “Aaron team.”

Eradiri said, “I have no business whatsoever with the Niger Delta
Avengers. I am the President of the Ijaw Youth Council, the largest
youth organisation in the Niger Delta region of Nigeria and not
    spokesman for NDA.

“Since the splinter group of the Niger Delta Avengers said they have
broken away and repented from their old ways, I call on them to come out
in the open and identify themselves openly instead of still using
pseudonym such as Cynthia Whyte to issue press statements.

“Any discerning mind will know that the said statement purportedly
naming sponsors of Avengers was issued by the promoters of the Aaron II
MEND negotiation with the Federal Government.

“Their grouse against me is because I said in my recent interviews
that MEND Aaron II team does have the mandate of the Ijaw and other
Niger Delta people to negotiate with the Federal Government. They are
desperate because of the lack of credibility in what they are doing.”

  • Jibrin Spits Fire Again, Indict Two Govs, Three Ex-members… Alleges Plot To Kill Him

Jibrin Spits Fire Again, Indict Two Govs, Three Ex-members… Alleges Plot To Kill Him

Just few days after he decided to heed the call of his party, the All
Progressives Congress (APC) and stayed away from further commenting on
his allegations of budget padding leveled against Speaker of the House
of Representatives and 12 others, the former Chairman of the House
Committee on Appropriation, Mr. Abdulmumin Jibrin has opened another can
    of worms again.

    Abdulmumin Jibrin

Jibrin had following the letter by the APC on Thursday directing him to stop “transmitting an opinion on the matter to the public” adding that it was, “looking into it towards finding possible solution” stopped commenting on the allegation in the media.

Aside the letter, it was learnt that party officials at a meeting
with Jibrin on Tuesday and and in subsequent interactions appealed to
the lawmaker to withdraw his petitions so that the crisis could be
    handled as “a family affair.”

But Jibrin after insisting Saturday on forging ahead with his petition, took to twitter on Sunday opening more can of worms.

Jirbin in his latest outburst accused two serving governors and three
former members of the House of Reps, saying their names will be
    revealed in due course.

He said Speaker Dogara is the son, father, grand father and great grand father of padding!

The lawmaker also said he no longer feel safe, alleging that there
are plans by Speaker Dogara, the 12 others and some vested interest
within and outside the House to kill him.

“It has once again become necessary for me to make some statements,
clarifications&further revelations. As you are aware, my party the
APC has intervened in the current crisis, following allegations of
corruption embezzlement&gross abuse of office leveled against
Speaker Yakubu Dogara, three other principal officers and 9 other
members, of which none had responded to any.”

“As i said earlier, it is only the 13 members of the House that are
on trial not the House of Representative as an institution.
Surprisingly they have resorted to using every tactics to narrow the
allegations to only issue of padding, which in itself is a grievous
offense, ignoring tens of other criminal allegations contained in my
petition to the anti-corruption agencies. In doing so, they
mischievously expanded the scope of the culpability to give an
impression that the entire House, Senate and even the Executive arm of
government and some individuals outside NASS are on trial. This is a
wicked attempt to drag many institutions and individuals into the matter
to neutralize the issue, spread fear and sell the dummy that the entire
country will go down if this matter is dealt with decisively, the
biggest blackmail on the entire country I have ever seen.”

“Nigerians should know that the whole agenda of this blackmail is
being coordinated by two serving Governors and three former members I
will give their names in due course. They have been running pillar to
post and I keep wondering what really are they afraid of.”

Jibrin who said he respected the decision of the party not to further
comment on the issue but insisted on pursuing his allegation said he
kept close watch on what was going on.

He said he discovered after three days of careful observation and
receiving information from very patriotic Nigerians, the two serving
governors and three former members “designed a grand plan to provide
soft-landing for Dogara and 12 others, give them time to clean up the
mess on their desk, destroy whatever evidence in their possession and
reach, spread money across members to buy signature, try to scare and
drag as many people as they can into this matter, invade the party and
top government officials and influential people that have the ears of
the president and try to change the media and public narrative by
embarking on very expensive media campaign to discredit and attack my
person with all manner of lies they can concoct.I have made it a duty to
respond to all the allegations against me”

He said the latest plot by the group has already been taken care of
in his memoir which he will begin to release any moment as against his
earlier promise of doing so on his birthday.

“The latest they brought up this weekend has already been taken care
of in my soon-to-be-released memoir But I have decided not to wait until
my birthday September to release it.I will start releasing the memoir
in piecemeal moment from now so that answers to their cheap blackmail,
including the junk and lies they peddle in the media, will be provided.”

The lawmaker said he was “shocked and dumbfounded to see the Speaker
on television saying padding is not an offence, wondering why he has
“the temerity to make such reckless, insensitive, arrogant and
fraudulent statement right within the sanctity of the Presidential
Villa, a place that symbolizes zero tolerance for corruption.”

“If you watched the Speaker on the screen talking, you can clearly
see that from his face, cap, Agbada, down to his shoes, it was a
radiation of corruption, dirty money, monumental fraud and abuse of
office. It was irritating to see such character around the corridors of
power. He didn’t know that by that statement he has clearly confirmed my
allegation that he and 3 others connived with some committee
chairmen to insert into the budget over 2,000 items worth 284billion
naira. No wonder he refused to take action despite my complaint.”

“Now that I have provided evidence that he and 3 others masterminded
the insertion of 40 billion into budget, another wasteful 20 billion
naira and attempt to force me to insert another 30 billion naira into
the budget. So padding is no longer an offense???!”

“So the Speaker is saying the nine roads he inserted into the budget
which he fraudulently sandwiched into 4 roads and inserted billions into
that without any design or costing is not an offense?Or the water
project he hijacked from the budget and took to his farm s not an
offense? Or moving ten solar boreholes to a place that probably requires
just two is not an offense? This has really proved that Speaker Dogara
is the son, father, grand father and great grand father of padding!
    Nigerians are watching!!!”

Jirbin called on All government and security agencies and top
government functionaries to be wary of the activities of thee two
governors and three former members going round trying to blackmail the
Senate and the Executive arm of government in order to diffuse and
    neutralize the allegations.

“It will be unfair to drag the Senate or senators into this. Everyone
knows that it is the House that has commanding powers of
appropriation. There is nothing in the senate appropriation committee
secretariat, that is why I requested for the protection of only that of
the House. when I heard Dogara was planning to destroy the computers and
the hardware. The Senate president was too busy then to even get
involved. He was always receiving what I later realized was skeletal
    briefing from the Speaker.

“It is a strong tradition of the National Assembly that in an event
of disagreement between standing committee of the Senate and the House,
that of the House supersedes. That was exactly what we did on 2016
budget except that of Health, where we adopted the report of the Senate
because the chairman House Committee on Health practically converted the
budget to his personal estate, moving massive amount of money that
made the whole exercise looked like a big joke. I heard the chairman Hon
Chike Okafor talking, trying to put defence on TV, and I simply said
truly looters have no shame in Nigeria. The Minister of Health Prof
Adewale is alive to testify and he knows the role I played to get the
health budget, at least to an implementable shape.”

On the allege plot to kill him, he said: “I have prepared myself for
any eventuality. I have spoken to my mum and dad extensively during the
weekend. I have prepared my family. I have handed a handwritten note and
documents to a SAN,a man of integrity&other persons that I believe
will lay it bare if they kill me”

Troops Recover Register, Pictures Of Militants In Arepo Creeks, Destroys 97 Camps

The military at the weekend made major recoveries in its ongoing
operations to flush out militants from Lagos and Ogun Creeks from where
    communities are being attacked.

The ground forces which moved into the creeks after the Air Force
bombardments, have recovered pictures and a register containing names of
    suspected militants.

It was gathered that the ground forces also destroyed about 97 camps in the enclave.
A source close to the operation, who didn’t want to be quoted because
he is not authorised to speak to the media, said stench of decomposing
bodies filled some of the camps, although no bodies were found.  He
described this as an indication that many of the militants might have
been killed from the air strikes, noting that the fleeing militants
might have taken the bodies of their men.

Other items found there are three laptops, expended magazines, an AK47 rifle and police and military uniforms.

“The recovered items will aid the investigation by the DSS and enable
them to go after and apprehend the suspects,” said the source who added
that the recovery of the pictures and names of the suspects in a
register; shows that they are organised and that they usually signed in
and out. “In one of the registers there are about 450 names on it.”

He added that “the police and army uniforms found had no names on
them. We saw a lot of personal effects and I can tell you that the
militants suffered casualties because of the stench coming out of the
    camps.”
it was also learnt that the profiling of the arrested 11 suspects is
ongoing. One of the revelations is that four of them have been
identified as Ilaje, a development that corroborates claims from certain
quarters that the gunmen were not from any particular ethnic group.
