AAUA Students’ Union Gives Ondo Government 7-Day Ultimatum Over Lingering ASUU Strike

Tension is brewing at Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko (AAUA), as the Students’ Union has issued a 7-day ultimatum to the Ondo State Government to resolve the ongoing internal strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) in the institution.
In a statement released on Friday, October 17, 2025, and jointly signed by the Students’ Union President, Comrade Salami Akeem (Ologbon), the General Secretary, Comrade Bakare Jamiu Abiodun (Unique), and the Public Relations Officer, Comrade Ajidagba Mosadoluwa (Mosa Gold), the Union accused the state government of insensitivity and silence in the face of the lingering industrial crisis that has crippled academic activities on campus.
The statement described Governor Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa’s “silence and irresponsiveness” as a direct affront to students, calling it a betrayal of trust and a display of nonchalance towards the welfare of Nigerian students. According to the Union, the governor’s inaction has brought embarrassment to his administration and cast a shadow over the reputation of the state.
While commending the university’s lecturers for their dedication and resilience, the Union expressed sympathy with the academic staff, whom it referred to as “builders of excellence.” The Union noted that the lecturers have continued to perform their duties under difficult conditions despite the government’s alleged failure to pay salaries and provide adequate subventions to the university.
Citing Martin Luther King Jr.’s words that “our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter,” the Union stressed that it would not fold its arms while students’ academic futures are jeopardized. It warned that the staff salaries should be viewed as an obligation arising from agreements, not as a privilege.
The Students’ Union stated unequivocally that if the government fails to resolve the crisis within 7 days, students across the state will be mobilized for mass action. “The government must address this internal ASUU strike within 7 days or experience the fierce wrath of Nigerian students,” the statement read.
The Union urged the Ondo State Government to treat the issue with urgency, noting that Adekunle Ajasin University remains a pride of the state and must not be allowed to deteriorate further.
As at press time, the Ondo State Government has yet to issue an official response to the ultimatum.
  • Owo Council Crisis Deepens As Legislative House, Chairman Clash Over Suspension

Owo Council Crisis Deepens As Legislative House, Chairman Clash Over Suspension

Tension has gripped Owo Local Government Area of Ondo State following conflicting statements between the Legislative Arm and the Executive Chairman, Hon. Tope Omolayo, over his recent suspension by the council’s lawmakers.

In a press statement issued by the Majority Leader of the Legislative House, Hon. Owamoyo Tolani Okolo, the councillors maintained that the decision to suspend Hon. Omolayo was taken in line with due process and constitutional provisions. The lawmakers stated that the action became necessary after allegations of gross misconduct, financial improprieties, and violation of statutory regulations were brought against the chairman.

According to the statement, ten out of eleven councillors were present during the sitting, which was duly convened with the presence of key officials, including the Clerk, Deputy Clerk, and Sergeant-at-Arms. The lawmakers further explained that the legislative mace, as the recognized symbol of authority, was properly positioned, and the House had deliberated and even passed a bill titled *A Bill to Stop the Use of Siren Without Official Authority for Owo Local Government Area*, before proceeding to suspend the chairman.

The Legislative Arm described insinuations that the sitting was illegal as false and misleading, stressing that its decision was taken in the best interest of accountability, transparency, and good governance. The lawmakers also alleged that Hon. Omolayo had resorted to threats and intimidation, accusing him of using an opposition party-aligned NULGE President to issue death threats against councillors who were only performing their constitutional duties. They called on security agencies to investigate the matter and ensure the safety of all legislative members.

However, Hon. Omolayo has described his suspension as illegal, baseless, and an act of political immaturity. In his own statement, the council boss alleged that only six councillors were involved in what he termed a “devilish act” and insisted that the purported suspension did not follow any legitimate procedure.

He revealed that four councillors had already distanced themselves from the move, including Hon. Aladenusi Oladapo, Hon. Olaniyi Ogunmolawa, Hon. Olaniran Adekunle, and Hon. Fagbamila Kehinde. Omolayo accused the councillors behind his suspension of making outrageous financial demands, including a request for twelve million naira, which he refused to entertain.

The embattled chairman reaffirmed his loyalty to Governor Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa, the Deputy Governor, Hon. Olayide Adelami, and the Olowo of Owo, Oba Ajibade Gbadegesin Ogunoye III. He called on residents to remain calm and pledged to continue discharging his duties within the confines of the law and in the best interest of the people.

As the crisis unfolds, concerned observers have called for intervention from the state government and traditional institutions to prevent further escalation and to safeguard stability in Owo Local Government Area.

  • Ondo PDP Chair Blasts ‘Toothless’ Assembly, Says Aiyedatiwa Running Cosmetic Governance

Ondo PDP Chair Blasts ‘Toothless’ Assembly, Says Aiyedatiwa Running Cosmetic Governance

The Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ondo State, Barr. Modupe Aisida, has taken a swipe at the Ondo State House of Assembly, describing it as “toothless” and ineffective in discharging its constitutional duties.
Aisida made the remarks while speaking during an interview monitored on Fresh 102.9 FM, Akure, where he assessed the performance of the current administration led by Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa and the general state of governance in Ondo State.
According to him, the Assembly has failed in its oversight responsibilities and has become largely invisible in the eyes of the public. “Most people in the state don’t even know we still have a House of Assembly,” he lamented. “If they were truly performing their oversight functions, things wouldn’t have been this bad.”
The PDP Chairman accused the lawmakers of neglecting their constitutional duty to hold the executive accountable, alleging that the state’s growing opacity in financial management was a direct result of a weak legislature. “It’s not as if there is no money now,” he said. “After the removal of fuel subsidy, the state and local governments are getting more funds, yet there’s little to show for it. What is the percentage of budget implementation? What have they done with local government allocations? These are the questions the Assembly should be asking.”
Aisida criticized what he described as a lack of transparency in the handling of contracts and public funds, pointing out that even basic information such as project costs and budget performance has become inaccessible to the public. “We don’t know the cost of most contracts being awarded. Every contract, every program must have a declared value. It’s part of transparency. The House of Assembly should insist on that,” he said.
He further expressed dismay over the alleged fraud that trailed the recent recruitment of teachers in the state, describing it as a reflection of administrative negligence.
On the defecting lawmakers who recently left the PDP for the ruling APC, Aisida noted that their decision was driven by personal interests rather than public service. “They didn’t defect because the APC is doing well. Everyone knows the government is underperforming. It’s purely about survival,” he stated.
Aisida, who has been a member of the PDP since 1998, insisted that the opposition party was reorganizing to provide credible leadership and hold the government accountable. “We are not sleeping. We have started well, and our people will soon begin to see the difference. Governance affects everyone, not just politicians. We all share the same destiny,” he said.
He also challenged the state government to open its financial records to public scrutiny. “Let them open their books. Let’s see what’s coming in and what’s going out. It’s not enough for local government chairmen to say ‘all is well’ when the system itself lacks transparency. Governance must be accountable to the people,” he added.
Aisida concluded by reaffirming the PDP’s resolve to act as a strong opposition, stressing that both citizens and the media must continue to demand transparency and good governance from the ruling party.

Ondo PDP Chairman, Dupe Aisida, Urges Unity, Says Party Positions Not Family Titles

The Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ondo State, Barr. Dupe Aisida, has called on party members to put unity above personal ambition and to respect the democratic process that produces party leaders.

Speaking during a monitored interview on Fresh 102.9 FM, Akure on Monday, Aisida, amongst other issues, addressed internal disagreements within the party and clarified his stance on the principles guiding leadership selection in the PDP.

According to him, leadership in the PDP is not a personal or family inheritance but a product of democratic participation and party consensus. “It’s not a chieftaincy title tied to my family,” Aisida said. “It belongs to every member of the PDP. Only one person can emerge at a time, and as a loyal party man, once the process is credible, there’s no reason to fight it.”

Aisida explained that during the last internal selection process, the South Senatorial District had expressed strong interest in the position, but the party, in its wisdom, decided to zone it to the North for the sake of unity and fairness. “When the matter was zoned to the North, several aspirants from different local governments came out, including Hon. Ogungbuji. About seven of us went for an interview before the committee, and after deliberation, a report was issued, and one person emerged. The consensus process was aimed at maintaining harmony, but the option to obtain nomination forms from Abuja was open to anyone who disagreed,” he said.

The PDP Chairman criticized those who, after losing, resort to attacking party leaders and spreading misinformation. He described such actions as undemocratic and harmful to the collective interest of the party. “A true party man must learn to accept defeat. It’s a hallmark of a gentleman,” he added.

On efforts to reconcile with aggrieved members, Aisida confirmed that he personally reached out to Ogungbuji after the selection process. “I called him several times and even involved one of our foremost leaders to mediate. Politics should not divide brothers or destroy relationships built over the years,” Aisida noted.

He said it was surprising that, despite those reconciliation efforts, tensions still exist, but he emphasized that politics often comes with such challenges. “Anything can happen at any time, but our focus must remain on unity and progress. We should avoid rancor and work together for the success of the PDP,” Aisida concluded.

  • How Ondo South’s Leaders Are Failing Their Only University, OAUSTECH Student Leader Speaks Out

How Ondo South’s Leaders Are Failing Their Only University, OAUSTECH Student Leader Speaks Out

Elusoji calls for urgent action and fairness in regional development

A student leader of the Olusegun Agagu University of Science and Technology (OAUSTECH), Okitipupa, Elusoji Samuel Temitope, has appealed to political representatives and stakeholders from the Ondo South Senatorial District to urgently address what he described as the persistent neglect of the institution and the region.

In an open letter addressed to the Governor of Ondo State, members of the National and State Assemblies representing Ondo South, and other political stakeholders, Elusoji expressed deep concern over the growing sense of abandonment felt by the student community and residents of the district.

The letter, titled *“An Open Letter of Appeal to Political Representatives and Stakeholders of Ondo South Senatorial District,”* lamented the poor state of infrastructure, unreliable electricity supply, inadequate healthcare, and the lack of sustainable youth empowerment initiatives across the area, despite being home to many influential political figures.

According to him, the abundance of leadership in Ondo South, including a serving Senator, a Deputy Speaker, Members of the State House of Assembly, and three Members of the House of Representatives, has not translated into meaningful development for the people. He noted that the silence, slow responses, and insufficient actions from these representatives are no longer administrative lapses but reflect a pattern of systemic neglect of the people who entrusted them with power.

Elusoji described OAUSTECH as the only university located in Ondo South and a vital symbol of progress for the district. He said the institution’s challenges have been worsened by poor government attention and the exclusion of its students from major developmental planning efforts.

He highlighted what he called unfair comparisons and systemic inequity between OAUSTECH and other tertiary institutions in the state such as the Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA), Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko (AAUA), and Adeyemi Federal University of Education (AFUED), Ondo, which, according to him, continue to receive greater attention and investment.

Elusoji stated that OAUSTECH students continue to struggle for basic visibility while their counterparts in other institutions enjoy consistent recognition and support. He maintained that Ondo South does not seek pity but fairness and that the region’s students are only asking for equity and opportunities equal to those available in other parts of the state.

He emphasized that the growing student population of OAUSTECH should be regarded as a source of strength and development for the district. He urged leaders to harness this potential through targeted empowerment programmes, leadership training, and innovation-driven initiatives that would enable young people to contribute meaningfully to the state’s development.

The student leader called on the Governor, Senator, Members of the House of Representatives, Deputy Speaker, and other political figures from Ondo South to visit OAUSTECH soon for direct engagement with the student community. He said such a visit must be meaningful and result-oriented, adding that students expect open dialogue and commitments that would lead to practical solutions.

Elusoji urged political leaders to move beyond promises and adopt a long-term approach to youth empowerment, including mentorship opportunities and entrepreneurial support that would prepare young people for the challenges of the future.

He stressed that true representation is not measured by campaign slogans or publicity events but by the real impact that leaders make in the lives of their constituents.

Reaffirming the readiness of the student body to collaborate with leaders who are genuinely committed to youth and educational advancement, Elusoji said his message was motivated by love for the institution and a desire to see Ondo South progress.

He concluded by saying that leadership should not be defined by titles but by tangible impact, adding that now is the time for the district’s leaders to make that impact truly felt.

Copies of the open letter were sent to the Governor of Ondo State, the Senator representing Ondo South, the three Members of the House of Representatives from the district, the Deputy Speaker of the Ondo State House of Assembly, the Commissioner for Education, the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Student Affairs, and the Vice Chancellor and Dean of Student Affairs of OAUSTECH.

  • Governor Editor At It Again: The Sad Story Of Ondo Students’ Buses

Governor Editor At It Again: The Sad Story Of Ondo Students’ Buses

    by Wándé T. Àjàyí

Towards the twilight of his administration, the late Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu (SAN) approved and paid for the purchase of ten brand new buses each, meant to serve the Students’ community across Ondo State. The decision was hailed at the time as a deliberate investment in student mobility, safety, and welfare, a forward-looking policy that resonated with the youth constituency of the State.
When Hon. Lucky Aiyedatiwa was still everywhere in search of political relevance and patronage, he rode on that sentiment. He promised the Students’ community that he would ensure the buses were delivered without delay. It was a loud promise made with conviction, but like many others, it was easier made than kept.
Months rolled by. Students grew restless and eventually had to take to the streets in protest over the failure of the government to fulfill that simple promise. The official excuse then was that the company awarded the contract for the buses could not complete the process and was therefore asked to refund the money to the State Government. To the best of the information available to me, the company has since made a full refund.
But rather than bring closure, the situation took a strange and unfortunate turn. In a meeting with student leaders last week, Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa, in his characteristic manner, turned himself once again into what I call the Editor in Chief of Governance. He didn’t just review the project, he edited it beyond recognition.
From ten brand new buses, he edited the number down to five. And from brand new, he edited the type down to used, tokunbo buses. That, sadly, is not editing for efficiency; it is a downgrade disguised as delivery.
It is, to say the least, sacrilegious. These are buses that had already been paid for in full under a government he was very much a part of. So, one must ask why subject our students to the risk of commuting in vehicles that come with obvious technical uncertainties? The tragic memories of July 13, 2012 remain fresh in our minds. That dark day should have been a permanent lesson, not a reference point we risk reliving.
Meanwhile, it is becoming a pattern, this habit of editing good plans into bad projects. If Governor Lucky must edit, then let it be an upgrade, not a downgrade. The youths of Ondo State deserve better than recycled promises and refurbished realities. Give them their 10 brand new buses or account for the money refunded.

PDP Denies Manipulation Allegations, Says Ondo Congress United The Party

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ondo State has dismissed claims by a group within the party alleging that the just concluded State Congress was manipulated, describing the allegations as baseless, deceitful, and an attempt to sow discord among members.
In a statement issued on Sunday in Akure and signed by the party’s Director of Media and Public Communication, Comrade Wándé T. Àjàyí, the Ondo PDP maintained that the congress was one of the most transparent, participatory, and unifying exercises in the party’s recent history.
Àjàyí noted that the process was conducted in line with the PDP Constitution and the guidelines approved by the National Working Committee (NWC), under the supervision of officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
According to him, delegates were duly accredited, the process was peaceful, and the outcome reflected the collective will of genuine party stakeholders across the 18 local government areas and three senatorial districts of the state.
The statement also revealed that several individuals listed as signatories to the controversial release by the group known as Kick Against Deceit had since disowned it. Those who publicly denied involvement include Charles Adeduro, Caroline Olupitan, Pat Ojo, and Dagbatan Anjorin Peter, among others.
“The deceitful nature of that release and the desperation of those behind it have been exposed. Many of the alleged signatories have denied ever authorizing their inclusion or participation,” Àjàyí said.
He described the congress as a landmark moment for the Ondo PDP, saying it marked the first time in a long while that the party would demonstrate unity of purpose and readiness to reclaim power through democratic engagement, internal cohesion, and transparent leadership recruitment.
Àjàyí further alleged that those behind the “baseless publication” were known elements who had resisted reforms aimed at repositioning the party for victory.
“Their discomfort stems not from the process itself but from the fact that the era of imposition, manipulation, and backroom politics is over,” he said.
He urged party members and supporters across the state to disregard the publication and remain committed to the new leadership of the PDP in Ondo State.
“The 2025 State Congress has come and gone, and history will record it as a turning point, the moment when the PDP in Ondo State rose above petty interests to chart a new course toward victory,” Àjàyí stated.
He reaffirmed the party’s focus on rebuilding trust, strengthening grassroots structures, and presenting a united front ahead of the 2027 general elections.
