COVID-19: No Need for Panic, Support Government and Take Precautionary Measures, Oyedele Advises Ondo Residents

A leading governorship aspirant of the All Progressives Congress, APC, in Ondo State, Ife Oyedele (FNSE), has urged the people of the State to remain resolute and take precautionary measures as advised by the government to curb the spread of coronavirus.

In a statement by his media aide Yomi Adebayo, on Sunday, in Akure, Oyedele advised residents and the people of Ondo State to ensure social distancing, regular washing of hands, self-isolation and other measures encouraged by healthcare experts to stay safe from contracting the virus. He said though Ondo state has no confirmed cases of COVID-19, but it is important for residents to also take the precautionary measures serious and not subscribe to the fallacy that the virus cannot survive in Africa.

“The virus is not incurable and the present circumstances it has brought upon us are not insurmountable. We confronted Ebola virus in 2014 and through the efforts of government and support of the citizens we overcame. Presently, thousands of patients in China where the virus originated from have recovered and more are recovering. In Nigeria, six cases have been announced to have recovered, so there is no need to panic, all we need at this time is to cooperate with government and heed the advice of healthcare professionals to stay safe,” Oyedele said.

While commending the effort the Federal and State Governments in ensuring the closure of schools and discouraging large social gathering to curb the spread of the virus, Oyedele said, parents should also assist government by sensitizing their children to imbibe the habits of proper hygiene.

He said though Ondo State is in an election year, which is usually filled with continuous political convergences and engagements, he enjoined political actors to be mindful of large political gatherings, saying such gatherings pose more threat and could sabotage efforts to ensure the virus is contained.

“Health is Wealth. You can only fulfill dreams when you are healthy and alive. Parents should support the effort of government by teaching their kids the basic rules of cleanliness. Everyone must be vigilant and be ready to report any strange health issue to medical experts.

“COVID-19 has shown that everyone is equal before God. Its deadly effect transcends both the social and economic gaps between the rich and the poor. It is a clear indication that no individual or nation is powerful than God. There are no Superpowers or First World countries, no Second World and Third world countries before the creator. This means that it is God’s design that we love ourselves equally and it is important that the world should return to God at this time.

“Elections will come and go but only those who stay alive will be able to enjoy the dividends of government. Any large gathering either social, political and religious should be discouraged as they negate the purpose of social distancing encouraged by government to stem the spread of the virus”.
    Oyedele concluded.

#Ondo2020: Olusola Oke is Aketi Mole, Disqulfy Him Now, Group tells Unity Group

A youth group within the ruling All Progressive Congress in Ondo State, APC Youths Assembly, has called for the immediate expulsion of a governorship aspirant Olusola Oke, SAN, from the leading interest group within the party, The Unity Forum, which is presently in search of a credible candidate to represent the group in the APC primaries in July.

The group said this is necessary because Oke is a spy in the group, working against the interest and intent for which the group was formed a few years ago.

The group in a statement by its leader, on Wednesday in Akure, Com. Adifala Ologun, warned that it will amount to a futile effort and betrayal of trust reposed in the group by party members if it ends up considering the choice of Oke as its consensus candidate. “What he deserves is disqualification for disloyalty,” it said.

The group alleged that Oke is working for the incumbent governor of the State Arakunrin Rotimi Akeredolu. It said that the present drama playing out within the group may fault the credibility of the group and make a mockery of its years of hard work if things are not properly done as expected.
It said the decision of the group may either unite or further divide the party than its present state as party faithful are relying on it for hope.

“We had earlier warned the group on the inconsistency and losing antecedents of Olusola Oke over the years. We warned that he wouldn’t mind selling the group to anyone for a price, now it’s playing out.

“Oke is neither calculative nor wise, he is desperate and that has always been responsible for his failure and political woe. He can’t be trusted to be loyal to a cause, he would sell his own candidacy for a price at the detriment of his followers.” Adifala said.

The statement further read “Why has the group not disqualified Oke for disloyalty after he didn’t deny the allegation that he is negotiating with Aketi? Party faithful are beginning to raise questions on the authenticity of the Unity Group. We have duly been informed that Aketi, through Oke, has bought almost all the members of the Group. Even Arakunrin’s close associates, especially one Alex Ajipe, are all over the streets boasting of their principal’s influence on the Unity Group, saying Oke has been financially empowered to work according to their boss’s plan. Aketi’s wife has also been in contact with Mrs Oke, and that speaks volume.

“Members of the Unity Group should be mindful of their reputation and avoid any form of manipulation because all the APC loyalists in the State are counting on them to mend and strengthen the family cord of the party again. The Group should disqualify Olusola Oke now if it has not being compromised. Where exists no law, there exists no sin.” The group concluded.

Considering, that the African society is naturally communal, it is crystal clear that if not careful handled the virus may soon ravage the entire continent. More so, considering the challenges African countries face in the health sector.

WAYC, is hence appealing to WHO, UN, AU and all regional organization in Africa to step up their games. A more proactive care is required. The government of each States must realize that its fundamental values is to ensure  safety of lives of her citizens.

#Ondo2020: I Will Run Under AAC, Work On The Elements Of Human Security, Adeleye Announces

A governorship hopeful, Adekunle Adeleye, has announced he would be contesting under African Action Congress. This was stated in a statement shared to some selected journalists on his decision to fly the flag of AAC in the forthcoming gubernatorial elections in the state. According to him, he settled for the party because it’s a home to people of like minds, who have strong love for the nation and unshaken commitment to the growth and development of Nigeria.

In the statement, he explained the elements of human security, one of the latest paradigms in International Relations discussion, make up his manifesto for the good people of Ondo State. These human security, which include economy and health, will see to the rise of Ondo amidst the comity of states in Nigeria.

According to him, through the Economic Security plan in his manifesto, Ondo State will become the third largest economy in West Africa as the government has no business running business. When elected, he assured ‘Ondo State will instantly begin to engage with the federal government to underscore and expose the fiduciary relationship between us, sometimes by negotiation and when necessary, by litigation, to the benefit of our great  state. We will re-establish  old, decayed enterprises, support existing businesses, pursue new ones and back them up with strong and smart legislation for continuity and posterity.’

Privatization will be the bedrock of our economic policies where indigenes can invest and be prosperous. We will encourage formal and informal apprenticeship which will be crucial in the growth of innovative technologies after opening up the state to broadband internet access. This effort will also drastically reduce undue pressure on the job market.’

On Food Security, Adeleye believes embracing agricultural technologies will bring food to the tables of Ondo people as farmers would be encouraged to organically grow their plants. While assuring the people of exploring all aspects of farming, he is ready to support them with the needed infrastructures.

‘I am of the firm belief that the best way to improve the health sector is by massive investment in public health, where prevention rather than cure will be the main focus. According to W H O malaria remains one of the biggest challenges in Nigeria today.’

Adeleye believes health security is important and the present administration in Alagbaka is eroding the legacies of Dr. Olusegun Mimiko in maternal maternity. He assures the people of the state his total commitment to revamping the decaying health sector.

Stating his readiness to adopt the state policing system if and when granted, he is committed to personal security of the people of Ondo state and their properties. In his words, ‘we will produce the most effective police, the best equipped, the best remunerated and the best structured. Indeed, our state will be the safest in the country as we recognize the importance of security in these dangerous times and development.’

The governorship hopeful also threw his weight behind the Western Nigerian Security Network tagged ‘Operation Amotekun’, citing the readiness of the people to practice communal security to defend the land against external incursion and aggression on our land.

On his plans on political security, Adekunle Adeleye reiterates his plans to carry the people along when elected. He promises to make the people the government while he would only be there as governor. He also assured the people of transparency and accountability in government.

Adekunle Adeleye is from the Southern senatorial district of Ondo state.

  • Akeredolu Has Performed Too Far Below Mark – Olafeso

Akeredolu Has Performed Too Far Below Mark – Olafeso

The Peoples Democratic Party South West National Vice Chairman and a gubernatorial aspirant in the party, Dr. Eddy Olafeso had described the performance of Ondo State Governor, Arakunrin Rotimi Akeredolu’s administration in the last three years as being too far below mark. Olafeso made this statement on Tuesday in AKURE.

Olafeso, accused Aketi of the destruction of the long cherished history of free education in Ondo State from primary school to the tertiary institution. He also counseled those saying that Aketi is working to consider the scary percentage of students that had already dropped out of school since the governor came to office. He added that 35% of students that dropped out school were forced to take such negative life impacting decision because of the approval of the regime of exorbitant fees by the Aketi’s administration.

Olafeso said, “Please for those saying Aketi is working, they should kindly know the percentage of school drop out since he came into the office. He destroyed our entire heritage of free education at the primary and secondary and tertiary institutions. It is scary that in the tertiary institutions, we have over 35% drop-out because parents can no longer pay”.

Likewise, Olafeso dismissed as over hyped the achievements of Governor Akeredolu in over three years of being in office. He said: “Looking at the landscape, you know that few kilometers of road is not exactly what is required to build a state. The human capital development is being abandoned and the quality of education. Can somebody please ask the governor what is the ranking of Ondo state in WAEC and NECO since he came in. So why is he winking in the dark thinking that the world will notice him when he has not done that much”.

Olafeso said that he and his political family have had been preparing themselves all the while for governance and he thanked God because the time is now right for a progressive to change the landscape of Ondo State for the people. He further said that although the agitation for southern governorship was part of the issue; he however declared that
capacity, integrity, honour and experience were far more important to him then political geography.

Similarly, Olafeso has accused the administration of Arakunrin Akeredolu of lack of transparency as regards the finance and revenue base of Ondo State. In his words, “Were you aware that Ondo State is the owner of OPL 241 and can somebody ask the Aketi government how many barrels of oil they have been able to drop out of that or the additional revenue. All we know is that much money is being taken out through consultancy fees and nothing has been seen”.

Speaking on the issue of rational governorship, Olafeso posited that inasmuch as he prefers that merit and competence should be given preference. He however concluded that the people has the right in a democratic setting to agitate for participation in their own government.

“You cannot ignore the agitation of people to participate in their own government. It is just a usual way in influencing democracy to ensure that everybody is carried along.

“I believe that the South alongside with all the factors, they have the right to say yes it is our turn. But, the essential part is not just saying it is your turn but providing quality material to actually represent you in government and that is exactly what we are trying to do”.

Meanwhile, Olafeso has drawn comparison between the achievements of previous government in Ondo State and that of Arakunrin Akeredolu which he described as a child’s play. He said that the fact that Akeredolu had not recorded any major achievement in his over three years manifested in bringing President Buhari to commission the projects of preceding administrations.

“You know we saw the fact that during the visit of the president, there was nothing to actually show the president. Except things that had actually preceded him in Omotosho and in other places and that overhead bridge across Ore which is less than hundred meters compare to what happens in Ogun State and other places. This is just a child play”.

Olafeso also lamented the prostrate condition of the state’s economy which he blamed on the unbearable burden that is tasking the people to death. According to him, “The state is prostrate, the economy is not improving, people have been tasked to death. You may have to really claim that he is doing more in terms of IGR, but the honest truth is the fact that our people are being tasked to death”.

  • OPINION: Sustainable Energy and Nigeria’s Climate Dilemma by Ayeni Damilola

OPINION: Sustainable Energy and Nigeria’s Climate Dilemma by Ayeni Damilola

Deciding how to go about the economy is, no doubt, an arduous business for Nigeria’s decision makers at this time of ecological abnormals fuelled by climate change. The stakes are high, as whatever path Africa’s economies follow will determine if global warming will ever be tamed. On the table are two different options for Nigerian leaders: the age-old fossil fuels route, and the modern sustainable (also called renewable) energy pathway. The choice is absolutely theirs, but a look inward could advice what is better for the country at this crucial moment.

Nigeria, like other West African nations, is believed to be warming faster than the rest of the world, and would likely have a bite of climate change earlier than most other places. This, according to investigations, is not a distant future prediction, as those effects are all over the country already. In the north, for instance, water bodies, including lakes and streams, are drying up. Annually, sand dunes cover arable land, the size of Lagos, forcing the retirement of farmers to the cities, and herders to seek refuge in the country’s south. But the south is not left out. Dwellers in the coastal areas are on the run following sea advancement inland, and some other places experience unusual flash floods, leading to the death of hundreds, and loss of properties worth millions of dollars, every year.

Agricultural production is generally under threat all over the country by a new rainfall pattern of either too late onset or pre-term cessation. Dry spells and off season rains, among other global warming outcomes, contribute to the very high risk now associated with farming in Nigeria. Climate change has also been linked to the waves of unrest in some states, ranging from farmers-herders clashes in the middle east, to insurgency, which has killed thousands, displaced over two million, and caused damages close to a billion dollars in value.

Amidst all these is a growing fear that  Lagos, the country’s economic nerve, could be entirely submerged. This was revealed in a 2012 study of the University of Plymouth which predicted disaster for Africa’s largest city at a sea-level rise of between three and nine feet in response to rising temperatures. A warming of that magnitude could also shield rains from Nigeria’s north, while pushing enough water to the south to wash away both soils and crops. Destructive storms and ocean surges are also anticipated, should global warming go on, leaving less to the imagination on what a full-scale climate crisis would look like. The future is, therefore, scary, and it’s not difficult to see clearly the reason Nigeria committed to the Paris Agreement which seeks a good cut in the carbon footprint of every nation in other to prevent a full-scale climate break-down.

A reduction in Nigeria’s carbon emission is, however, a decline in its use of fossil fuels which dominate the country’s economy. Its export, its industries, its agriculture, its transport sector, all thrive on fossil fuels, while over 80% of its electricity come from fossil-fired plants. According to World Poverty Clock meanwhile, Nigeria is home to world’s largest number of people living in extreme poverty, and of course, poverty alleviation and radical economic growth are the big issues of government at the moment. But the easy-to-tap resources on which such growth depends are the ones changing the climate, and from the other end is a call to leave them in the soil.

Anyone will call this a dilemma, but in order to keep climate change in check, more and more countries are learning to do away with fossil fuels, and from their stories, it is clear that a transition to sustainable energy is neither impossible nor a rocket science. Energy is sustainable when it can not run out and does not pollute or heat up the planet. Such energies come from the air, sunlight, ocean and everyday plant and animal wastes. Other than its  environmental and health benefits, sustainable energy could be the remedy to the age-long power challenge keeping Africa’s most populous nation behind.

Nigeria, according to a 2018 draft report of the World Bank Environment and Social Systems Assessment (ESSA), is unable to provide electricity for about 80million of its citizens. But power is a vital ingredient of economic growth anywhere, and, as economists put it, a 1% rise in its supply leads to 4% growth in an economy. Fortunately, research reveals that Nigeria has enough solar energy resource to close its electricity access gap, and open the window for radical industrialisation and agricultural revolution. There’s also a reasonable biomass reserve for use in the transport, and other sectors of the economy. Nigeria, therefore, has enough renewable energy potential for any country to flourish without heating up the planet.

The energy transition procedure that works for a country, however, depends on its prevailing climatic, ecological and financial realities – no one size fits all approach exists. Nonetheless, should Nigerian leaders decide to go the clean energy way, some basic lessons can be learnt from countries around the world which have already made significant progress. Sweden, according to the International Energy Agency (IEA), “is a global leader in building a low-carbon economy”. It already meets half of its citizens’ energy demand from sustainable sources, and is on target of 100% renewable power by 2045. From Sweden’s story, one thing is clear: if anything must change to give room for a clean energy switch, it is politics.

Politicians must first walk away from short-termism, i.e., finding short and easy solutions to energy problems or expecting on-the-spot return on energy investment; and believe that Nigeria has much more to benefit from sustainable energy than whatever upfront capital is required to get it running. Nothing good comes easy, after all. It is equally important to set ambitious targets for renewable energy expansion, backed up with legislation and finance. Private fossil investors need be discouraged through the introduction of carbon tax, and provisions should also be made for financial incentives like subsidies for clean energy companies.

One more lesson from Swedes: Citizens’ mindset matters. For a government to achieve success in a capital intensive project of this kind, which full benefits may require a bit of time, the majority of its citizens must be in support. To make this happen however, citizens must first be positioned to value and appreciate sustainable energy, through nationwide awareness programs in partnership with educational institutions, civil society organisations, and other stakeholders.

The future of Nigeria really looks good with sustainable energy than the other option on the table. One, it is the way out of a deleterious climate change. Two, it is a proven path to economic prosperity. Choosing to pay the price, today, will surely place us shoulder-to-shoulder with the woke nations of the world, which flourishing low-carbon economies confirm the words of Arnold Schwarzenegger, that “the future is green energy, sustainability, renewable energy.”

Teni storms Ondo City in preparation for the Teni Billionaire Homecoming Concert

    By Ogbeni La

In a surprise move that has left many music enthusiasts in Ondo state mouth ajar, the management team of Teni in the company of the award winning superstar herself stormed Ondo city yesterday (Sunday) for an on ground assessment and promotional tour for her much anticipated Teni Billionaire Homecoming Concert coming up on April 13, 2020.

Since the Billionaire crooner took to her verified Instagram page to post the online flyer of the event few weeks ago, there have been speculations on the scope of the concert.

According to her management, Teni has been clamouring for an opportunity to reach out to her fan base from Ondo where she hails from since her breakthrough song ‘Uyo Meyo’, a rendition in her native Ondo dialect. This explains why the event is made a free concert and strategically scheduled for Easter period to demonstrate her genuineness of purpose.

Teni was in the company of her mum, dad and other creatives in town as she made appearances at the Ondo Township stadium venue of the concert and other happening spots in the city before she retired for the day around 11pm.
