Drug Abuse: Youth Group Takes Drug Education To Schools In Southwest Nigeria

Concerned about the unprecedented rise in contraband use and drug abuse amongst Nigerian youth, especially in the Southwest, Oodua Youth Coalition(OYC), has concluded plans to take drug education to secondary schools across Yoruba land. In a release signed by Oluyi Tayo Akintade, National President, and Oluwagbenga Ajongbolo the National Publicity Secretary, the group expressed deep concern about the scourge and the lack of attention from governments.

Here is the full press text:

This, we believe, will enlighten the students on the dangers of abuse of drugs, encourage them to abstain from it and empower them with more information to positively influence their friends and family.

Recently, video clips of sufferers of substance abuse went viral on social media, with one literally begging to be sent back to the planet earth from wherever he was. Apart from the immediate ‘madness’ substance abusers suffer, the long-term effects cannot be overemphasized. Loss of memory, mental disorder, financial struggles, relationship breaks, family issues, imprisonment, deaths etc are few of the effects of drug abuse.

It is important to note that drug abuse is not limited to hard and illegal substances only. Alcohol, painkillers and other legal substances could be abused too. The students would be taught a wide range of approaches to stay away from contrabands and illegal drugs and exposed to the dangers of abusing legal ones.

For sustainability, Anti-Drug clubs would be inaugurated in these schools made up of students, teachers, medical experts and volunteers spread across Yoruba land.

We are committed to promoting, protecting, projecting and preserving the omoluabi culture of the Yoruba people and we believe this drug education will serve the purpose.

Yes. Well said my amiable and amicable comrade. This is a top-notch write up.

However, the process of salvaging every aspect of the nation's sector is a complete systematic process which must be done symbiotically. These processes never leave the educational sector untouched.

It is expected that the students too play there roles so as to have the best educational system we dreamt a d desired for.

All little actions of each and every individuals alongside the private and public efforts will cummulatively result in achieving this.

Some of the actions required of studebst include but not limited to:

  • ACHIEVING THE SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT GOALS 4 & THE NIGERIA EDUCATIONAL STATE

ACHIEVING THE SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT GOALS 4 & THE NIGERIA EDUCATIONAL STATE

The United Nation Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) was adopted at the United Nations General Assembly (UNGAS) in New York on September 25, 2015, and of the 17 goal agenda adopted, quality education is number 4 on the list, only coming after No poverty, Zero hunger and Good health & Well-being.
The systematic arrangement of the goals only pin point that the UN after strategic planning and research could identify pressing needs for development of developing nations and the world at large.
No doubt or virtually little doubt can be cast over the assertion that the failure of countries like our dear country Nigeria and some other African countries to achieve a reasonable mark towards the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) was what led to the adoption of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
The poor state of the Nigerian Educational System is not hidden neither has any attempt to tackle this catastrophe been successful. The evidence of our fall is reflected outrightly with the rate of out of school children increasing drastically.
In 2016, the management of the Universal Basic Education Commission (Established in 1999 and backed by the law on the 26th of may 2004, when Obasanjo signed the Universal Basic Education Act) released an alarming statistics on the state of education the primary level in Nigeria. The statistics showed that Nigeria had the highest number of out of school children in the world, an estimate of about 10.5 million with majority from the North and this was attributed to exponential growth in population that has added pressure on the country’s resources and public service.
That said, the depressing state of Nigeria universities has also yielded in series of strike activities with the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) embarking on indefinite strike actions which obviously has not only tell on the student but also affected the academic calender of schools. Polytechnics and colleges of education are not exempted as the common cry at the various categories of higher institution of learning has been the lack of adequate facilities to foster effective learning.
This negative trend has now become a National creed at the various levels of education in the country from the primary up to the higher institution level. These are just highlights of the various problems that crept into the educational sector and all these can only be attributes to poor funding and breach of agreements, discriminations at different levels, obsolete and crumbling infrastructures and constant embezzlements.

    THE BIG QUESTION
According to the NANS zone D General Secretary Comrade Giwa Temitope Is there hope for the Nigerian child?
We must admit that the journey to attaining an applaudable rate of achievement towards a Qualitative educational sector is an Herculean task, with the facts naked right before our eyes, the same can be said with other sectors of the Nation. The government has a major role to play in upturning the flow of events in this ugly show .
The readiness to do the needful and a strategic position of action towards this course (Quality Education) is a starting point to attaining change.
Introduction of incentives at the primary level like providing free textbooks and working materials, provision of delicious school meals (free lunch) can go a long way in making children run back to school (If you can feed me, you can own me) as an hungry child cannot learn. Attaining success in the educational sector through meeting the SDG number 4 goal will go beyond planning and advance to implementation and provision of adequate funds.
Partnership with private sector and international organisation could also go a long way in changing the tragedy plot of the Nigerian educational sector.

Yes, there is hope for a better tomorrow by Comrade Giwa Yisa Temitope, Secretary-General of National Association of Nigeria Student Southwest (NANS Zone D)

  • OPINION: AMOTEKUN; Tinubu a Social-Political Affliction on the Yoruba Race.

OPINION: AMOTEKUN; Tinubu a Social-Political Affliction on the Yoruba Race.

B.A.T Successfully made no sense with his over 4500 words, absolute balderdash laced with semantic malapropism.
He has succeeded in trending a twaddle and baloney statement with a view to boost his 2023 presidential arrogance.

South West governors crossed the line? Condemning AMOTEKUN regional independence on one hand and suggesting lagos neighbourhood watch as an alternative? Tinubu needs to think again and most importantly,  disassociate  himself from creating and forming  the Neighbourhood watch, it’s simply a Governor  Ambode initiative and not his personal achievement.

I am glad he addressed himself as the National Leader of APC and Asiwaju of APC and not the Yoruba’s.  As far as i am concerned,  he only addressed us on his personal and family stand on the AMOTEKUN, in actual sense there was notting significant he said other than sitting on the fence abd calling on Governor Akeredolu to have a meeting with him.

Mr Bola  stylishly compaired Ekiti State and Ondo State to Lekki,  this is an insult on the collective sensibility of the the people of this two states,  particularly Ondo state. His plan to oppress and suppress the Governors of this two states like he did to other south west states excluding Oyo, was graphically evident in the bumkum he wrote as an official statement.

B.A.T remains a local cobbler suffering from quandary yet assuming the role of a leader who wish to amalgamate the South West.  Faulting the SW governors on the proprietary or otherwise of not involving the A.G of the federation is notting but ass-licking. It is the fundamental obligation of the governors of southwest Nigeria under section 13 CFRN, 1999 as amended to protect their citizens.  Sovereignty belongs to the people of Nigeria. The governors of the SW under Section 14(2)(b)  of the 1999 constitution are empowered to provide Security and welfare for the people. The word government as used is not exclusive and i see no reason why the Governors of the states in South Western Nigeria need to consult the President or the Attorney General of the Federation before securing and providing welfare for their citizens.   The part 1, second schedule of the constitution defines “Government” defines government to include the Federation of a state or of a local govt council or any person who exercise power or authority on his behalf. Therefore the state governors are government unto themselves and has no business reporting to the A.G. or consulting on security issues. Is the Attorney General a security guard or expert?

B.A.T should not use the Yoruba people and the AMOTEKUN initiative as a window of ventilation.  He’s not a governor of any yoruba states nor a traditional leader in any of the Yoruba community hence he should not assume the role of trado-political generalisimo. His jurisdiction remains and restricted to his ikoyi burdillion residence, where he enjoys exclusive lordship.

“AMOTEKUN needs no coloration or political opinionist” we are our own AMOTEKUN.

“Every Yoruba is an Amotekun”… Ooni of Ife.
