Corruption: Court Sentences Buhari Appointee To Jail
Calistus Obi, former Acting Director General of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), has been sentenced to seven years imprisonment.Mojisola Olatoregun of the Federal High Court in Lagos delivered the judgement on Monday. The judge, however, gave him the option of paying a fine of N42 million. The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) had charged Obi to court on allegations of N136 million fraud.Olatoregun had found him guilty of money laundering and converting the agency’s funds to personal use at a court sitting that held on May 23.The EFCC had charged Obi to court alongside Dismass Alu Adoon, a former staff of NIMASA.At one of the court sittings, Rotimi Oyedepo, the prosecuting counsel, had urged the court to impose the maximum punishment of 14 years imprisonment on Obi.This, he said, would serve as a deterrent to other civil servants.President Muhammadu Buhari had appointed Obi as the acting Director General of NIMASA two months after he assumed office in 2015.Patrick Akpobolokemi, Obi’s predecessor, had been fired after the president ordered the dissolution of boards and the sack of all heads of federal government parastatals.Akpobolokemi is currently being prosecuted for corruption while in office. -

OPINION: APC: Party of the Muslim, By the Muslim, For the Muslim? By Odidi Omoaka
It is reasonable to conclude that whenever the All Progressives Congress (APC) holds up the mirror to look at itself, the image that comes up is that of a once-in-an-age progressive entity created to remedy our national defects.
Hard evidence, however, declines to support this distorted image. By 11 June, if the ruling party’s desire comes to fruition, the control of three arms of the country’s government will be in the hands of Muslims, the first time since the return to democratic rule in 1999.
President Muhammadu Buhari is already the leader of the Executive arm. The Judiciary has Justice Tanko Mohammed in place as the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), following the chicanery that ousted Justice Walter Onnoghen, a Southern Christian, as CJN. The President of the Federal Court of Appeal, Justice Zainab Bulkachuwa, and Chief Judge of the Federal High Court, Justice Adamu Abdu-Kafarati, like the CJN, are both Muslims.
The Senate, should things pan out as the APC has them planned, will have Senator Ahmed Lawan as President, with a strong possibility that his deputy will be Kabiru Gaya, who has been everything but coy about his ambition. The House of Representatives, by APC’s design, is expected to produce Femi Gbajabiamila, a Muslim, as Speaker. The Gbajabiamila camp has already settled for Idris Wase, a Muslim from the North-Central zone, as Deputy Speaker.
The design is similar to the APC adopted in 2015, which had the same candidates for both positions. But it was outwitted by Senator Bukola Saraki and Hon. Aminu Dogara, who halted the plan for Muslim headship of the two chambers by restoring religious balance.
What this indicates, uncomplicatedly, is that the APC views Nigerian Christians, especially those in the South, as children of a lesser god, who deserve no more than political crumbs. Hints that the APC was designed as a special purpose vehicle to foist an Islamic domination agenda on Nigeria were there from when it emerged in 2013 as a fusion of disparate and desperate political interests.
It could not have been otherwise. The party’s totem, General Muhammadu Buhari (now President), is a die-hard Sharia advocate who, justifiably, also merits that tag of a sectional champion. Early in 2014, an Islamic cleric, Ambassador Yusuf Garba, likened the APC to Egypt’s Muslim Brotherhood and accused it of harbouring plans to Islamise Nigeria. Garba, a member of a group named Religious Equity Promotion Council (REPC), arrived at his position just by looking at the APC Interim National Executive Committee, which was chock-full with Muslims.
Appointed as National Chairman was Chief Bisi Akande, Aminu Bello Masari as Deputy National Chairman, Tijani Musa Tumsah as National Secretary, Nasir el-Rufai as Deputy National Secretary and Lai Mohammed as National Publicity Secretary. The party also appointed Sadiya Umar Faruq as National Treasurer, Shaibu Musa as National Financial Secretary, Abubakar Lado as National Youth Leader, Muiz Banire as National Legal Adviser, Bala Jubrin as Deputy National Auditor and Sharia Ikeazor (a convert to Islam) as National Woman Leader.
The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and other groups, particularly the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), also warned that hints of bias in favour of Islam carry the potential to uncouple the country, as they were bound to reboot sectarian tensions. Their voices were, however, drowned out by the powerful APC propaganda machine, abetted by undiscerning Nigerians and power-seeking desperadoes.
Further hints of the APC’s indifference to the country’s religious plurality manifested after General Buhari had emerged as presidential candidate and was shopping for a Southern running mate. It emerged that the party was considering Tinubu to run on a Muslim-Muslim ticket with Buhari, news of which provoked widespread disapproval, including from former President Olusegun Obasanjo. The APC back-tracked, picking Yemi Osinbajo, a Pentecostal pastor, and momentarily selling itself as a thoughtful entity.
But old habits are notoriously tough to shake. Following its victory in the presidential election, the APC rebooted its agenda-with Buhari at the wheel. Among his first appointments, even while it took him six months to constitute a cabinet, were Lawal Daura, a retired officer recalled to head the Department of State Security (DSS); Hammid Ali, a retired Army officer as Comptroller-General of Customs; and Abba Kyari as Chief of Staff. The agenda proceeded with the appointment of Ibrahim K Idris, an Assistant Inspector-General of Police, to replace Solomon Arase as Inspector-General of Police. That particular appointment induced, in one fell swoop, the retirement of 21 Deputy Inspectors-General of Police and Assistant Inspectors-General of Police, who were Idris’ seniors. It equally manifested in the President’s decision to replace Dr. Ibe Kachikwu as Group Managing Director of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) with Dr. Miakanti Baru, a Northern Muslim; and refusal to appoint, in substantive capacity, Mr. Matthew Seiyefa, as DSS Director-General, after serving in acting capacity when Daura was sacked by the Vice President. Instead, Buhari appointed Yusuf Magaji Bichi, a Muslim from Kano State. The same pattern could be seen in the replacement of Kemi Adeosun, a Yoruba Christian, who resigned as Minister of Finance. Her replacement turned out to be Mrs. Zainab Ahmed, who was said to have been the candidate of Governor Nasir el-Rufai of Kaduna State.
As such, it was not much of surprise when el-Rufai, with breathtaking insensitivity to the tinder-box religious situation in Kaduna State, settled for a Muslim running-mate, a decision he said had the approval of President Buhari with whom he consulted.
Bad as the situation is, there is a huge chance that it could get worse. Much worse, especially for Southern Christians. The conduct of the APC in the last four years does not inspire hope that the next four will drip with sensitivity to religious or sectional balance. By 2023, Nigerians will have another chance to elect a president. There is very little, if any, chance of Buhari’s successor being a Christian or Southerner. Rumoured to be keen on the job is el-Rufai, whose indifference to the plight of Christians in his state has seen communities explode with violence, one after the other, like firecrackers on a string. Tinubu, the Southerner, who is allegedly being pressured to run, is a Muslim.
The APC, it is safe to assume, will not hand its presidential ticket to a Christian, Northern or Southern. It is not wired to be balanced in anything it does. The chances of a Christian emerging Nigeria’s president in the near future, I believe, are wafer-thin. The Northern political/religious establishment is ceaseless in saying politics is a numbers game. A recent study released by the US fact tank, Pew Research Centre, projects that Nigeria will be home to 9.5 per cent of the global Muslim population by 2060. As at 2015, it stood at 5.1 per cent. The projection is that local Muslim population would have grown from a little over 90million (50 per cent) in 2015 to 283.1million (60.5 per cent). Conversely, the Christian population (86.6million in 2015) is projected to climb to 174.2million in 2060. While the 2015 figure (48.1 per cent of local population) gave Nigeria 3.8 per cent of the global Christian population, the projected 2060 figure will have Nigerian Christians making up 37.2 per cent of local population and 5.7 per cent of global Christian population.
Islam continues to spread globally. Figures show that 31 per cent of children born worldwide between 2010 and 2015 were Muslim and babies born to Muslims, whose faith allow polygamy, are expected to outnumber those born to Christians by 2035. In Northern Nigeria, non-Muslims have been known to convert or risk being frozen out of socio-political benefits. These conditions are to the advantage of religious supremacists such as the APC and reduce the possibility of a Christian Nigerian president.

Get Rid of Godfathers – Oyegun to APC
Former National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Chief John Odigie-Oyegun, has called on the ruling party and, by extension, all political parties to get rid of godfathers and entrench internal democracy in political parties in Nigeria.
Oyegun, who spoke in an exclusive interview with New Telegraph, lamented that the phenomenon called godfatherism had done so much damage to political parties and democracy in the country. His call is coming barely three weeks after another chieftain of the APC and Governor of Kaduna State, Mallam Nasir el-Rufai made a similar demand and provided a recipe for dethroning political godfathers in the system.
Oyegun, who conducted the first general primaries of APC in 2014, said the lack of internal democracy in political parties had increased the number of cases in court. He urged the APC and other political parties to shun godfatherism and allow internal democracy thrive as the consequences of lack of it were too grave.
His words: “I think the basic problem we have all over is the godfather thing. Internal democracy simply means that if 10 people want to vie for an office, so be it. Let the electorate decide.
“But when party leaders are the ones deciding who is fit or who is not fit, that becomes a problem.
That is the decision of the electorate. And when they start displacing persons with their friends and other undesirable inducement, that is totally unacceptable. The damage it does is that you are destroying the belief of the electorate in due process. So, it becomes more difficult to accept the result of an election.“The moment people start believing that they cannot get a fair share, that the system cannot be fair to them, whereas if you painstakingly pursue the process of letting the electorate decide, eventually you will find out that this going to court will begin to go down. But once you do otherwise, people would have at the back of their minds that they are not fairly treated and would look for every manner of excuse to go to court.
That alone opens up the judicial system and the entire political system to another level and different levels of corruption. “So, the damage is intense and I pray that our politicians will see the need for a proper internal democracy and allow due process and allow the people to thoroughly decide.”
The former APC national chairman, whose comments came while assessing political developments in Nigeria in the last two decades, expressed concern at the rising insecurity in the land and admonished President Muhammadu Buhari to urgently address the challenge of insecurity. According to him, it would be hypocritical for anybody to pretend that the issue of insecurity in the country is a fluke as the various incidents of kidnapping, banditry and insurgency were too glaring to be dismissed with a wave of the hand.
On the recent controversy triggered by the comments of the former President, Olusegun Obasanjo, on alleged Islamisation and Fulanisation plots, Oyegun commended the former leader for playing the role of a statesman by speaking out when he considered that things were going wrong. According to him, Obasanjo would remain the desire of all nations given his high level of patriotism, doggedness and uncommon courage while telling truth to power. “Well, I respect him. Every nation needs a man like that just like the people’s SAN, Chief Gani Fawhemi and a lot of activists. What is happening is that because of his status, his experience, his background, what he says becomes infinitely weighty and cannot be ignored. It may be dramatized, but he is addressing an issue that is with us.
I just told you that this issue of socalled Fulani herdsmen and the copy cats that have followed it has to be addressed. “So, the issue has to be addressed. I wouldn’t give it the kind of Islamization tag that is given to it, but there is no question at all that it calls for worry because these people exist virtually in every state of the federation and, very soon, it would lead to unpleasantness in all over the country. “So, the issue has to be addressed and, as I told you that as far as I am concerned, it would be one of the first priority of the next level administration,” Oyegun said. On the calibre of persons expected to serve in President Buhari’s next cabinet, the former APC national chairman charged the President to appoint men and women of integrity into the Federal Executive Council (FEC) to assist him in driving his vision for Nigeria.
“First, they must be people who believe in his vision. Considering the man we have as President, we need thoroughly honest people who share his vision, aspirations for this country and are ready to go all out honestly and diligently to work and bring about the kind of change we are asking for.
“We have adopted the next level, so it must be clear that we are going to move to the next level. The kind of faces that we would be looking forward to see are faces that when their names are mentioned, the public will say thank God because they see hope, they see competence, they see honesty, they see passion, they see people who believe in a greater Nigeria, people who believe that we don’t have to be where we are. That things can be much, much better and things will be much, much better in this second term,” he said.

How Much Liverpool, Spurs, Chelsea & Arsenal Will Earn From European finals
Liverpool, Tottenham, Chelsea and Arsenal are all due big financial windfalls this summer after qualifying for their respective European finals.
After two remarkable second-leg comebacks, Liverpool will face Spurs in Madrid aiming to win their sixth Champions League crown, while Arsenal are set to face Chelsea in the controversial surroundings of Baku, Azerbaijan, in the Europa League final.
Football finance expert Swiss Ramble analysed the potential incomings for all four clubs to estimate how much they will all earn thanks to their progress in the competitions this season.
Champions League
Revenue from the Champions League shared between the clubs has increased by 54% this year from €1.269bn to €1.950bn.Simply participating in the group stage was worth €15.25m alone, with extra bonuses of €2.7m for a win & €900k for a draw. Going further brings in even more – reaching the first knockout round is worth €9.5m, the quarter-final an additional €10.5m, semi €12m and final €15m. The winners of the final are given an additional €4m.
There is also further income to be taken into account due to TV revenue and the share of the UEFA coefficient distribution, which rewards clubs depending on their Champions League success over the past decade.
Liverpool have received slightly more prize money than Tottenham at this stage due to their superior group stage record, while they also earn more from the UEFA coefficient distribution.
Europa League
As the above shows, Arsenal and Chelsea will net significantly lower sums for reaching the Europa League final.Total revenue from the competition has significantly increased by 40%, although that is still lower than the 54% increase which has taken effect in the Champions League.
The distribution from the UEFA coefficient is also much lower, standing at 15% in the Europa League as opposed to the 30% in the Champions League.
Again, the winners of the final will earn an extra €4m, but both clubs are set to take home significantly less from European competition than they did last season.
Chelsea’s drop can be easily explained by the fact they were in the Champions League last term, from which they earned €65m, but Arsenal are on course to earn less from the Europa League despite the fact they have gone one stage further than 2017-18.
The Gunners earned €38m by being knocked out at the semi-final stage by Atletico Madrid last season, whereas as things stand they have earned €36m by reaching the final this term.
