Truck Drivers Block Aliade-Otukpo Highway, Ground Traffic

Commuters and other road users were stranded for several hours on Wednesday following the blockage of the Aliade-Otukpo section of the Makurdi-Aliade-Otukpo federal highway in Benue State.

The blockage was reportedly triggered by a disagreement between officials of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, and truck drivers at Aliade in the early hours of the day.

The truck drivers subsequently blocked the highway, bringing vehicular movement to a complete halt and leaving commuters and other road users stranded on both sides of the road.

The development caused a traffic gridlock along the busy federal highway, with travellers forced to wait for several hours as efforts were made to resolve the situation.

Officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC, the Nigeria Police Force and other security agencies were later deployed to the area to restore normal traffic flow and prevent a breakdown of law and order.

Details of the disagreement between the NDLEA officials and the truck drivers were still sketchy as of the time of filing this report.
