Ondo State: ‘Save Us From Hunger’ — Ondo Emergency Workers Beg Akeredolu To Settle 12-Month Salary Debt
ggrieved workers of the Ondo State Emergency Medical
Services Agency (ODEMSA) on Monday protested the failure of the state
government to pay their salaries for 12 months.
The workers lamented that refusal to pay their salaries was taking a
heavy toll on them, as they had all been working hard without pay. They stormed the government office at Alagbaka in Akure with
solidarity songs, demanding payment of their salaries starting from June
2017.Many of them also asked the state government to revalidate their
‘letter of permanency’ with the agency in order to become full-fledged
staff.ODEMSA workers said they were living in penury, following their abandonment by the government.
Accusing Governor Rotimi Akeredolu of insensitivity to their
agitation, they carried placards that read, among others: ‘Governor
Akeredolu Hear Our Cry’, ‘Pay Our 12 Months Old Salaries’, ‘Save Us All
From Hunger’, ‘Hunger Is Killing Us’, ‘Our Job Is A Life Saving Job’.
Samuel Aderoju, leader of the protesters, said that the last time
they received their salaries was in June 2017. He lamented that effforts
to reach out to the Akeredolu-led government repeatedly met brick
walls.“We are the emergency rescue team on the highway but while we are all
rescuing people, we are not being rescued as our salaries are not being
paid,” he said.“We are being owed 12-month salaries; some of us have sick children at home; we have wives and many of us have become debtors.
“The suffering is getting too much on us and we don’t want to die
until the government rescues us from our situation because things are
hard.”He stated that some workers of the agency who are contract staff had
been fighting for their permanency since the inception of the Akeredolu
administration.Mr. Aderoju noted that although the state government had carried out a
verification exercise to absorb the contract staff fully into the
system, the result of the exercise was being deliberately withheld to
frustrate workers out of the agency.“The Units of the Extricator and Call Center in the agency have not
been staffed and we are waiting for their permanency and revalidation,”
he said. “The total strength of the workforce in the two units is 120.”SaharaReporters contacted the state Ministry of Health for reactions
but non of the top officials was willing to discuss the issue. Also, calls made to the Commissioner of Health, Wahab Adegbenro, were
not connecting as of the time of leaving the Ministry and filling this
report.Source: SaharaReporters

Trump’s ex-driver sues for unpaid wages
US President Donald Trump’s former personal chauffeur on Monday sued
the Trump Organisation for years of unpaid overtime, claiming he was
exploited and denied a meaningful raise for more than a decade. It is the latest of many lawsuits against Trump or his businesses.
Noel Cintron, who served as driver for Trump, his family and
businesses for more than 25 years, was replaced by the Secret Service
when his boss won the Republican nomination for president in 2016. He
then joined the security staff. The New York lawsuit, dated Monday, is seeking to recover more than
3,000 hours in overtime, penalties, damages and lawyers’ fees for the
“harm” Cintron suffered while on the Trump company payroll.“In an utterly callous display of unwarranted privilege and
entitlement and without even a minimal sense of noblesse oblige,
President Donald Trump has, through the defendant entities, exploited
and denied significant wages to his own longstanding personal driver,”
the 14-page lawsuit states. While Trump is “purportedly a billionaire, he has not given his
personal driver a meaningful raise in over 12 years!” it alleged. The Trump Organisation, the umbrella company which is being run by
the president’s adult sons Donald Jr and Eric while their father is in
office, said Cintron was “at all times paid generously and in accordance
with the law.“Once the facts come out we expect to be fully vindicated in court,” a spokeswoman for the company said.
The plaintiff generally worked five days a week from 7:00 am to
whenever he was no longer needed, on average 50-55 hours a week,
according to the suit.In December 2010, he was given a $7,000 raise to $75,000 a year, but
only after losing his health benefits, saving his employer nearly
$18,000 a year in insurance premiums, according to the lawsuit. He never got another raise, and Trump failed to reimburse him for
accrued vacation time and sick days, and work expenses, the complaint
says.Cintron, it says, was not paid overtime for more than 20 years, but
under the statute of limitations can only claim six years’ worth, which
the lawsuit put at a total of 3,300 hours owed at “time and one-half.”Cintron’s legal team told AFP they were seeking $178,487.10 in unpaid
wages as well as interest, attorneys’ fees, and potential punitive
damages.Among other legal actions against Trump, lawyers for the US State of
Maryland and the capital Washington have separately accused Trump, in a
lawsuit, of accepting illegal payments through the Trump International
Hotel.Porn star Stormy Daniels, who claims she had an affair with Donald
Trump in 2006, also filed a lawsuit against the US president in April
for defamation.Source: Punch

Cameroon to hold presidential election on October 7
Cameroon will hold presidential elections on October 7, head of state Paul Biya said in a decree issued on Monday.Elected in 1982, the 85-year-old is Africa’s oldest and
longest-serving president, but has yet to say whether he will bid for
another term, although his supporters are already urging him to put his
name forward. The vote will take place in a context of mounting problems in the
oil-rich state, which faces an insurgency by anglophone separatists in
the west and bloody incursions by Boko Haram jihadists in the north. The main opposition, the Social Democratic Front (SDF), has already designated its candidate, Joshua Osih.
Other declared candidates include Akere Muna, a lawyer and former
vice president of Transparency International, and Maurice Kamto, head of
the Movement for the Rebirth of Cameroon (MRC).Earlier Monday, residents in Buea, the main city in the predominantly
anglophone Southwest Region, said gunfire broke out in the
administrative district and lasted several hours, marking a further
escalation in the separatist crisis.Anglophones, chafing over perceived discrimination at the hands of
the francophone majority, launched a campaign for greater autonomy in
2016.Biya took a hard line, rejecting demands for a return to Cameroon’s
federal structure and ordering a crackdown after the separatists issued a
symbolic declaration of independence last October 1.According to a government report last month, separatists had killed
74 soldiers and seven police since late 2017 while more than 100
civilians had died “over the past 12 months.”The UN says 160,000 people have been internally displaced and 20,000 have sought refuge in neighbouring Nigeria.
Northern Cameroon, meanwhile, has suffered by incursions by Boko Haram jihadists from neighbouring Nigeria.
Since 2014, the group has killed 2,000 civilians and soldiers and
kidnapped about 1,000 people, according to an analysis by the
International Crisis Group (ICG) think tank.Source: Punch
