2018 World Cup: Croatia sack coach ahead semi-final with England

The Croatian assistant coach has been sacked for posting a
politically-charged video to social media following the penalty shootout
win, meaning he will not be in the dugout for Wednesday’s semi-final
    clash with England.

Vukojevic, a former Croatia international, published a video in which
he and defender Domagoj Vida dedicated the dramatic win to Ukraine,
    prompting criticism from Russian supporters.

The clip showed Vida, who scored in extra time at the Fisht Stadium,
roaring “Glory to Ukraine!” while Vukojevic announced that “This victory
is for Dynamo [Kiev] and Ukraine.”

“The Croatian Football Federation hereby notifies the public that
Ognjen Vukojevic has been relieved of his duties as an associate of the
coaching staff of the Croatian national team by decision of the
management of the Croatian FA, and that he will no longer be a member of
the Croatian delegation at the Fifa World Cup in Russia,” a statement
    read.

“The Croatian Football Federation (HNS) has decided to revoke
Vukojevic’s team accreditation at the Fifa World Cup and to relieve him
of his duties as an observer for the Croatian national team.

“HNS hereby apologizes to the Russian public for the actions of a
member of the Croatian delegation. Ognjen Vukojevic and Domagoj Vida
likewise apologize for their statements, which were in no way intended
to have political connotations, yet which unfortunately left room for
    such interpretations.”

Fifa issued a formal warning to Vukojevic regarding his behaviour and
the former midfielder reacted to his dismissal by telling Russian
newspaper Sport Express: “There’s no politics in football. It’s a joke
for my friends from Dynamo Kiev. I love Russians and I love Ukrainians.”

2018 World Cup: ref gets life ban for bribery

A Kenyan referee who had been due to officiate at the ongoing World
Cup in Russia has been handed a life ban after being caught in a bribery
    sting.

Aden Marwa was filmed receiving a 600-dollar bribe during Confederation of African Football (CAF) assignment in Ghana.

He is one of 22 referees sanctioned by the CAF in an unprecedented clean up, announced at the weekend.

Marwa, who was a reserve at the 2014 finals in Brazil, had earlier
been removed from the list of match officials due to officiate in
    Russia.

The life ban was handed out by CAF’s disciplinary board, which also
banned 10 other referees for between two years and 10 years for similar
    offences.

A further 11 persons have been suspended pending an appearance at the board in August.
African football has long been plagued by allegations of bribery but
never before has CAF banned such a large number of officials.

  • The real reason Barcelona have offloaded Paulinho after just one season

The real reason Barcelona have offloaded Paulinho after just one season

During the Sunday evening lull that followed two days of dramatic World Cup quarter-final action, one transfer story in particular caught the eye.
Chinese Super League side Guangzhou Evergrande formally announced the return of their former player Paulinho, with the Brazil international returning to the club less than a year after leaving for Barcelona.
He re-joins his former employers on a one-year loan deal which includes a purchase option next summer.
Last summer’s deal cost the La Liga side £36.4m, with Barcelona set to somehow turn a £8m profit when the move is made permanent, according to Marca.

11 months ago he arrived at the Nou Camp. (Picture: Getty)
It’s a strange move for a number of reasons.
Paulinho’s move to the Nou Camp last year was initially met with widespread derision. Still reeling from Neymar’s world record move to Paris Saint-Germain, the arrival of the Tottenham Hotspur flop hardly placated Barcelona supporters frantically questioning the club’s management at board level.
In the end, it didn’t turn out too badly.
Paulinho featured 49 times for the Blaugrana last season, starting 21 of their La Liga matches and providing nine goals and three assists. While still not a perfect fit, the Brazilian surpassed (admittedly low) expectations.
So why the hasty exit? While long-term reservations over a player who turns 30 later this month may have been a factor, league regulations may have played the most pivotal role.
Barcelona, like all other La Liga sides, are only permitted to register three non-EU players in their squad.
The club have already struck a deal to bring another Brazilian midfielder to the club this summer in 21-year-old Arthur Melo from Gremio. That arrival would have left them with four non-EU players in Ernesto Valverde’s first-team squad alongside Paulinho, Yerry Mina and Philippe Coutinho.
Coutinho has explored the option of adopting Portuguese citizenship – which he is eligible for through his wife – to make life a little easier for his club, although it would appear that process is still ongoing.

Paulinho started in one Clasico last season. (Picture: Getty)
With Arthur taking one of the non-EU slots alongside Coutinho, there was space left for just one more.
For a while, it looked as if Mina would be the man to lose out. Despite only arriving in Cataluña in January, the Spanish press speculated the club were looking to offload him this summer after managing just 377 minutes across five league games during the second half of last season.
An impressive World Cup campaign with Colombia marked by three goals however appears to have bought him some time.
Paulinho’s departure appears to settle the issue of Barcelona’s three non-EU players for the 2018-19 season.

It was a funny thing to behold as a White Man was seen blocking his ears as Davido performed at Wireless Festival which took place in the U.K yesterday.
The video which has since gone viral on social media showed the young man trying to stop himself from listening to the song being performed on stage but the ladies around him kept on shouting and singing along with the artist.

  • R-APC National Assembly members plot mass defection July 31

R-APC National Assembly members plot mass defection July 31

     Members of the All
Progressives Congress in the Senate and House of Representatives may
defect en mass to the Peoples Democratic Party shortly before July 31, SUNDAY PUNCH has gathered.

    Investigations on Saturday showed that
the Reformed All Progressives Congress split from the main APC, on
Wednesday, was the first phase of the plot ahead of the mass defection.
It will be reminiscent of a similar mass
defection by the new Peoples Democratic Party to the APC in the run-up
to the 2015 polls in 2014.
Findings indicated that in spite of the
belittling of the strength of the R-APC by the APC, many lawmakers were
aggrieved and would leave the latter.
One senior source among the lawmakers told SUNDAY PUNCH
that though he had chosen to stick with the APC for “personal reasons,”
he was aware that many of his colleagues would spring a surprise soon.
Fighting with govs over 2019, power sharing cause of split

The source added, “A lot is happening
but the whole truth is not being told by the APC. There is this
impression that because the party has many supporters in the North-West,
there is a guarantee for them.
“Members are not happy. Politics is
about self interest. When governors collude with party officials to
snatch the return tickets of members, you know they will seek survival
    elsewhere.
“Return ticket is the issue. In the APC,
many of them have been told to forget 2019. If they will get it in PDP,
then that is the aim of the planned mass defection. There are
consultations across board and before the end of the month, they will
    make the defection come through.
“With the split, the R-APC has fulfilled
the provision of Section 68(1)(g) of the 1999 Constitution. There are
sufficient grounds to leave the APC today with the division created by
    the split.”
The section reads, “A member of the
Senate or House of Representatives shall vacate his seat if “being a
person whose election to the House was sponsored by a political party,
he becomes a member of another political party before the expiration of
the period for which that house was elected – PROVIDED that his
membership of the latter political is not as a result of a division in
the political party of which he was previously a member…”
It was learnt that as many as 80 Reps were on standby, in the first instance, to defect to join the alliance with the PDP.
The source added, “Take it or leave it,
the APC can no longer beat its chest to say it has the loyalty of
members in many states, particularly in the North-Central states, where
herdsmen kill villagers at will, and with no action by the Federal
    Government.
    “States like Plateau, Benue, Nasarawa,
Kogi, Kwara, Taraba contributed in swinging the votes in favour of
    President Muhammadu Buhari in 2015.
“So, you are looking at an alliance
between these states and the almost wholesale support for the PDP in the
South-East and the South-South and you will get the picture.
“Even in the North-West, the APC will
lose members in Kaduna, Katsina, Jigawa and Gombe states. The situation
is not different in the South-West, where the APC National Leader,
Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, can no longer secure mass support like he did in
    2015.”
Many senators, Reps have issues with APC —Atunwa
A member with strong affinity to R-APC, Mr. Razak Atunwa, disclosed to SUNDAY PUNCH that the faction had a robust action plan that it would unfold as time progressed.
Atunwa, who is the Chairman, House
Committee on Justice, stated that people seemed to have a narrow
understanding of the discord within the APC and preferred to reduce it
to a few political office holders.
He claimed that there were “many
senators, Reps, members of the state Houses of Assembly and more people
across the country,” who had issues with the party.
“I will say that after the (illegal) national convention, things are beginning to unfold.
“It is a matter of time and the reality
will dawn on everyone. There is a massive disagreement. This is not a
    joke,” Atunwa said.
Asked to put a figure to the lawmakers
who might defect, Atunwa stated that it was unnecessary since time would
    address the question.
“There is no need because the numbers will make themselves available in a matter of time, shortly; very shortly,” he added.
No need for confirmation, we’re ready —Senator
Speaking with one of our correspondents,
Senator Rafiu Ibrahim (Kwara South), one of the lawmakers loyal to
Senate President Bukola Saraki, insisted that those who were
marginalised  would be forced out of the APC .
Asked to confirm the comments by his
House of Representatives counterpart that the mass defection would occur
by the end of July in the National Assembly, Ibrahim said, “There is no
need for you to try to confirm such a decision. There is no need. It is
    as simple as that.”
    Also speaking with SUNDAY PUNCH
on Friday evening, a Senator from the South-West, who is eyeing the
governorship seat of his state, disclosed that he was considering Accord
    Party as an alternative.
According to him, the governor of his
state has hijacked the APC structure in the state. He said his case
would become worse if the outgoing governor, who is from the same
senatorial district with him, should go after his seat at the Senate.
“I won’t join the bandwagon but I may
dump the APC depending on the political events in the state in the
coming days. I am considering Accord Party because it has some dominance
    here.
“That is why I will advise those who
plan to defect en mass to consider the politics in their individual
    localities,” the lawmaker said.
A senator from the North-Central, who confided in SUNDAY PUNCH, said the mass defection from the APC was also imminent in the Senate.
“Just like it occurred in 2014 when the
nPDP senators left the PDP for the APC, this same thing will happen
before the end of the month. Many senators that have close affinity with
the R-APC will join the PDP,” the federal lawmakers said.
We won’t let a single member leave –Gbajabiamila
When contacted, the Leader of the House, Mr. Femi Gbajabiamila, told SUNDAY PUNCH that the party would continue to talk to its members to remain in the APC.
Gbajabiamila also said while it was not
true that between 80 and 100 members might defect, he was not ready to
lose one member to another party.
He added, “We will continue to talk to
our colleagues, and hopefully, they will have a rethink. Nowhere close
to 100 members are leaving, but even where one leaves, I am not happy
and will do all we can to get that one back.
“I read the press statement (by R-APC)
and I am sure things can be sorted out. Although, strangely enough, one
of the things complained about was that the convention process
contravened the provisions of our constitution. I think they
misconstrued the article of the constitution they talked about.
    “Interestingly, they also said the
convention was not democratic and at the same time, announced structures
    – both nationally and state-wide – without saying what democratic
process produced the officers that emerged.
“These and more are the things I intend
to discuss with my colleagues, and hopefully, we will be able to reach a
common ground with as many as possible. Like I said, I don’t want to
    lose even one member.”
    APC has become desperate –R-APC
On its part, the R-APC said attempts by the Adams Oshiomhole-led APC to break its ranks were doomed to fail.
The National Publicity Secretary of the R-APC, Kassim Afegbua, said this in a telephone interview with SUNDAY PUNCH, in Abuja, on Saturday.
He said members of the R-APC had reached
a point of no return in their quest to restore the APC to its original
state of pro-masses, purpose driven platform for genuine democrats to
access power for good governance and general welfare of Nigeria and
    Nigerians.
According to him, speculation that the
R-APC is given life to prepare grounds for defection to another party is
part of the propaganda by those seeking to weaken the resolve of the
    group to rebuild the APC.
He explained that what the R-APC was
interested in currently was to ensure that promises made by the APC to
    Nigerians in 2015 were fulfilled.
Afegbua said, “Democracy is a system
that caters to the interest of the majority of people in a given
society. That is why it is called democratic rule. We resist attempts to
push Nigeria towards a civilian dictatorship.
“They said we are hirelings. The people
they are going to talk to in the National Assembly; are they also
hirelings? You visit the Senate; you visit the House of Representatives.
Why are you talking to them? It is coming a little too late because we
are determined to take the APC back to the right path.”
In response to a question as to whether
members of the R-APC were afraid of a possible clampdown by the Economic
and Financial Crimes Commission and other agents of state, he said it
    was to be expected.
The R-APC spokesperson said, “Of course,
why would they clamp down? They will clamp down because they want to
sustain this phlegmatic leadership. They are desperate to sustain this
leadership that is not result oriented, that is not knowledge driven.”
Melaye hints on defection to PDP in new video
    Meanwhile, the lawmaker representing
Kogi West Senatorial District, Senator Dino Melaye, has hinted on his
defection from the APC to the PDP in a video on his social media
    platforms on Friday night.
In the video, in which Melaye danced
while singing a song common with those on the battlefield but with
modified lyrics, described the opposition PDP as “home” that he had
    missed.
While mocking the APC, he also said, “bye bye to jati jati (a Yoruba adjective that means disarray).”
The controversial senator had, on May
31, 2018, opted to sit among PDP senators in the chamber upon his
resumption after a long battle with the Nigeria Police, who arrested,
detained and arraigned him in separate courts in Kogi State and the
Federal Capital Territory Abuja over alleged gunrunning and attempted
    suicide, among other changes.
Melaye had urged the President of the
Senate, Bukola Saraki, to direct the sergeants-at-arms to provide
another seat for him at the side of the minority PDP section of the
chamber, saying he would sit beside a former Senate President, David
    Mark, in the interim.

Fernando Hierro leaves job as Spain coach

Fernando Hierro, who stood in as Spain coach when
Julen Lopetegui was sacked on the eve of the World Cup, will not
continue in the role, the Spanish football federation said Sunday.
Under the former Real Madrid and Spain defender, who had little
previous coaching experience, 2010 winners Spain lost on penalties to
host nation Russia in the last 16.

“After travelling many kilometres together, the Spanish Football
Federation and Fernando Hierro have put an end to their relationship,”
    the federation said.

Hierro declined to return to his previous job as the federation’s
technical director and “will undertake new professional challenges”, the
    federation wrote.

Spain were tipped among the favourites until Lopetegui caused chaos
by announcing he would become Real Madrid’s new coach after the World
    Cup.

The federation, fearing a split between players from Barcelona and
Real, sacked Lopetegui two days before Spain’s opening game against
    Portugal.

He described it as the saddest day of his life since the death of his mother.

  • Food prices soar as herdsmen killings hamper farming

Food prices soar as herdsmen killings hamper farming

    Farmers across the country have
expressed fears that the rising costs of food items in the various
markets will worsen this year owing to the activities of killer Fulani
herdsmen who have taken over farmlands in most parts of the country.

They lamented that the inability of the
Federal Government to address the dangerous trend might cause starvation
in most homes as the people would pay more to buy inadequate food items
    in the market.

The Chairman, Benue State chapter of the
All Farmers Association of Nigeria, Aondoana Kuhe, who spoke on behalf
of farmers in the state, told SUNDAY PUNCH that the current
unchecked attacks on his members in the state by the killer herdsmen
would definitely cause famine in the country.
Kuhe lamented that most areas, where the
food crops were cultivated, had been occupied by the herdsmen while
farmers, who escaped being killed, had fled to urban communities, where
    there is relative safety.
He said, “Benue is ranked among the
highest producers of rice, yam, soya bean, corn and sesame seeds but
when our farmers could no longer assess their farms, how do we produce
    food crops for the nation?”
He noted with regrets that 14 out of the
23 local government areas in the state reputed for large production of
food crops, were currently under attacks by the Fulani.
    Similarly, the Benue State Commissioner
for Agriculture and Natural Resources, James Anbua, who corroborated the
AFAN’s claims, said farmers in the state had lost over N8bn on rice
alone since the attacks started on New Year’s Day.
Anbua noted that Benue was ranked among
the fifth largest producer of rice in the country with the expectation
of a bumper harvest this year.
He said, “The two LGAs (Guma and Logo)
produce 25,000 metric tons of rice and soya bean but there are just a
few in the market because the ones that are due for harvest could not be
    taken from the farms.”
    The commissioner stressed that the
attackers set ablaze bans of yams and other food crops after feeding
their animals with enough quantity thereby making the food production
ratio of the state to drop by 45 per cent.
Some market women, who spoke to one of
our correspondents, decried the rise in prices of food stuffs between
February and June this year as a result of the attacks on farmers by
    herdsmen.
For instance, they claimed that in
February, a tuber of yam was sold for N200 in Makurdi, though depending
on the size, but that as of June, a tuber of yam in the markets cost
    between N400 and N500.
A rice seller at Wadata market, Makurdi, Mrs. Apeh Ogbu, said prices of every food items had jumped up.
According to her, in January, a ‘mudu’ (measure) of local rice was sold for N350 but that the same measurement sells for N500.
The National Publicity Secretary of the
Agbekoya Farmers Association, Chief Olatunji Bandele, confirmed that
food crops being produced from the northern part of the country had
become very expensive in the various markets in the south.
He said, “Pepper, tomatoes and onions
are very expensive now. The entire country still depends on the northern
farmers to produce the various varieties from their farms.
“Generally speaking, most of the food
items that come from the North are on the high side in terms of prices. I
think the price of garri is now N7,000 per bag. Food items that come
from the North like yam and beans have become very expensive.”
    Food prices have increased considerably
between February and the first week of July in some Lagos markets
visited by one of our correspondents.
    SUNDAY PUNCH investigations in
some of the markets revealed that in February, a moderate tuber of yam
was sold for N500 but now, it sells for between N1,300 and N1,500.
One ‘derica’ of beans was N250 in
February but it is currently being sold for N350 while a paint bucket of
garri, which was N300 then, now attracts N400.
One bag of rice was between N11,000 and N12,000 in February but now, it is between N15,000 and N15,500.
However, the Lagos State Chairman, All
Farmers Association of Nigeria, Chief Femi Oke, allayed the fears that
the attacks by herdsmen would trigger food price hike, but called on the
    government to end the killings.
He said, “Food prices cannot go up. In
fact, the cost of some food items is coming down because more people are
going into agriculture. Also, this year’s budget is encouraging than
what we had in the previous years.”
Also speaking on the matter, the
President, Nigeria Cassava Growers Association, Segun Adewumi, decried
    the killings by herdsmen.
He said, “Farmers are now being
disturbed by herders and I believe this disturbance, if not addressed in
earnest, will affect the prices of food, especially yam.”

the attacks by herdsmen would trigger food price hike, but called on the
    government to end the killings.

  • ‘Scapegoat’ Ozil should quit German team – Father

‘Scapegoat’ Ozil should quit German team – Father

The father of Mesut Ozil said Sunday his son should quit
Germany’s national squad after he was “made the scapegoat” for Die
Mannschaft’s shock first-round defeat at the World Cup.

Ozil, 29, has come in for hefty criticism in Germany after the World
Champions crashed out in Russia, finishing bottom of their group.

Pressure had already been mounting on the Arsenal midfielder in the
World Cup run-up over a controversial photograph with Turkey President
Recep Tayyip Erdogan that was seized on to question his loyalty to
    Germany.

On Thursday, Germany’s team boss Oliver Bierhoff sparked a new round
of outcry over a statement suggesting Ozil, who has Turkish roots,
should have been dropped after his failure to publicly clear up the
    Erdogan meeting.

“This statement is insolent. In my opinion, it is aimed at saving
one’s own skin,” said the mid-fielder’s father Mustafa Ozil in an
    interview with Bild am Sonntag.
Bierhoff later backtracked, apologising that he “was wrong”.

Ozil senior said he believed his son had agreed to have a photograph
taken with Erdogan only out of “politeness” and that it was never meant
    to be a political statement.
He also defended Ozil for not having spoken out to clarify his position.

“He no longer wants to explain himself, he no longer wants to have to
defend himself all the time. He has been playing for nine years in the
German team… including becoming world champions with the A-team.

“He has contributed a lot for this country. It has always been: if we win, we win together.

“But when we lose, we lose because of Ozil? He is now getting
whistled at and made a scapegoat. I can understand if he feels
    insulted,” said the midfielder’s father.

Calling the treatment accorded to his son “so unfair”, Ozil senior
said “he needs to decide for himself. But if I were in his place, I’d
say – thanks a lot but that’s it!”

“The hurt has grown too strong. And who knows what’ll happen at the
next match. In Mesut’s place, I would step down. But that’s just my very
    personal opinion,” he said.
