The APM Governorship Candidate in Lagos State, Mr. Laja Adeoye, has called on Nigerian political leaders to embrace the ideals of patriotism, selfless service and principled leadership exemplified by the late nationalist, Pa Herbert Samuel Heelas Macaulay, as the country prepares for future democratic milestones.
Adeoye made the call while speaking at the 80th Remembrance Ceremony held in honour of Herbert Macaulay in Lagos, describing the foremost nationalist as a visionary whose contributions laid the foundation for Nigeria’s democratic evolution.
He noted that Macaulay, widely regarded as the father of Nigerian nationalism, made history by founding the Nigerian National Democratic Party (NNDP) in 1923, the country’s first formal political party, while leading the struggle against colonial rule through fearless advocacy for constitutional reforms, press freedom and greater indigenous participation in governance.
According to him, Macaulay’s enduring legacy remains a source of inspiration for Nigerians committed to democratic values, justice and national development.
“The life of Herbert Macaulay reminds us that true leadership is anchored on courage, service and an unwavering commitment to the welfare of the people,” Adeoye said.
The governorship hopeful described the remembrance ceremony as both solemn and inspiring, noting that it brought together individuals dedicated to preserving Nigeria’s democratic heritage.
He also highlighted the significance of attending the event alongside Chief Olabode George, whom he described as a distinguished statesman and direct descendant of the Macaulay family, saying his presence reinforced the historical importance of the occasion.
Reflecting on Nigeria’s current political climate, Adeoye observed that the nation continues to grapple with economic challenges, institutional pressures and the need for accountable leadership.
He stressed that the sacrifices of the country’s founding nationalists should serve as a moral compass for contemporary political actors.
“As Nigeria looks ahead to the 2027 general elections, political leaders must place national interest above personal ambition, strengthen democratic institutions and work together in the interest of the people,” he stated.
Adeoye offered prayers for the repose of Herbert Macaulay’s soul, expressing hope that future generations would continue to draw inspiration from his ideals of freedom, justice and democratic participation.
He added that remembering the country’s founding fathers should go beyond annual ceremonies, urging Nigerians to reflect their values in public service and nation-building.
“History must not only be remembered; it must also be lived,” he said.
