Minimum marriage age for Muslim women raised to 18 in Malaysia

The Kedah state assembly in Malaysia has approved amendments to the state Islamic Family Enactment to raise the minimum marriage age for Muslim women to 18 years.

Speaking at the assembly this week, speaker Datuk Juhari Bulat said the amendment involved raising the age of marriage for women from 16 to 18 years old as well as the punishment for polygamy without court permission.

The punishment is imprisonment for one year or a fine of RM3,000 compared to six months imprisonment or a fine of RM1,000 previously.

“If you want to get married, there is any problem, you can apply through the court, if the court finds that the candidate should be allowed even if she is 16 years old, she can marry with the court’s permission.

Speaker Datuk also said Muslim girls aged below 18 who wished to get married may seek approval from the court.

“If the court decides that the applicant should be allowed (to enter marriage) despite being 16 years, the applicant may get married with the court’s approval.

“Those doing so without the court’s approval will be fined,” he told reporters at the end of today’s assembly sitting.

Juhari added that lawmakers also approved an amendment to increase the current RM1,000 fine and six months’ jail for those entering polygamy without obtaining the court’s consent to RM3,000 and one-year jail term respectively.

Indonesia to block Facebook, Google, WhatsApp

The Indonesian authorities are set to block social media applications and online sites including Google, Facebook, and WhatsApp

The country’s Ministry of Communications and Informatics said on Tuesday that if they failed to register, they would be blocked in several days.

The digital giants were given time until Wednesday to complete the registration for licensing, otherwise, the ministry would name them illegal and unlawful in the country.

“We have warned all local and foreign tech companies, including online services, sites, and application providers, many times that they have to register if they do not want to risk being blocked.

“We have given them time since six months ago,’’ the ministry’s Director General for Information Applications, Semuel Abrijani told reporters.

The registration is part of the country’s new regulation starting from January 2022, saying all tech platforms must secure licenses to be able to operate.

The regulation would allow the authorities to order the platforms to take down any contents considered unlawful, inappropriate and “disturb public order,’’ within four hours if deemed urgent, and 24 hours if not.

The Indonesian government is currently trying to reduce the spreading of misinformation and hoaxes, particularly ahead of the country’s general election in 2024.

CAN asks Christians to reject candidates with links to terrorists, drugs, corruption

The directive is contained in a circular sent to all churches in the country by the Political and Strategy Committee of CAN.

In a video that surfaced on social media on Monday, July 18, 2022, a senior pastor of Family Worship Center, Abuja, Pastor Sarah Omakwu was seen reading the circular to her church members.

In the circular titled “2023 General Elections; Whom To Vote For,” the body urged members to look out for certain qualities in the presidential candidates.

Some of the qualities stated in the circular are honesty, truthfulness, respect for the rule of law, respect for religious and ethnic diversity, compassion discipline, and credibility.

The religious body also said any candidate seeking to rule the country must not be a member of any cult group; involve in drug dealings, witchcraft, or have any affinity with Boko Haram terrorists or any violent religious groups.

CAN added that the candidate Christians should vote for must have performed excellently in previous positions; must have good education sufficient to manage a complex society, effective management skills of human and natural resources.

The body further said, “Offices must be shared fairly to every section of Nigeria. There must be equal ethnic and religious representation in military and security agencies. We say no to the RUGA settlement policy and yes to ranching. There should be education and free healthcare to all Nigerians including almajiris. We reject open grazing, rather, there should be modernisation of animal husbandry, local control of economy including waters, rivers and forests. Everyone should control what we have.

“The candidate must not be a member of any cult, must have no involvement in drugs and witchcraft, no fanaticism, no relationship to Boko Haram or other violent religious groups. The person must have quality performance in previous positions, good education sufficient to manage a complex society, effective management of human and natural resources. The person must have the ability to envision transformation, ability to communicate the vision to diverse peoples, ability to effectively effect the vision of transformation, must be in good health, sound mind and physical fitness for the job.”

Pastor Omakwu prayed to God to grant Nigerians the kind of leader Christians want in 2023.

She also enjoined Christians to fight to defend our faith, saying power is first about spiritual control before the physical.

2023: North East elders endorse Peter Obi of LP

AHEAD of the 2023 presidential election, some North East elders have endorsed the candidacy of Mr Peter Obi of the Labour Party, describing his choice as the best for modern Nigeria.
    .
The elders denounced the All Progressives Congress (APC)’s Muslim Muslim presidential ticket, saying the action of the party would not enjoy their blessings as açcording to them,it did not promote equity and fairness in a diverse Nigeria.
    .
In a statement on Saturday, the elders who described APC’s action as highest level of madness and an evil agenda in Nigeria, reminded the promoters of the same faith ticket to go memory lane to see if their action was in line with what founders of Nigeria’s democracy preached and practiced.
    .
Noting that Nigeria was a secular country that no religion should be elevated against others, the elders tasked APC to reflect on its action given that Nigeria of today had shifted from 1993 where such was promoted without any opposition.
    .
The North East elders, operating under the aegis of Coalition of North East Elders for Peace and Development (CNEEPD),told APC not to be comfortable with their action, saying the rigging which it was relying upon as party in government will fail them woefully as açcording to them,Nigerians would vote and safeguard their votes without fear or intimidations from APC’s hired agents.
